460185 tn?1326077772 Just another thought for you...some "distinguised" canines have done well on Hill's Prescription Diet b/d. The higher level of antioxidants is supposed to reverse some of the damage in the brain that causes the cognitive dysfunction. You might also think about asking our veterinarians for their thoughts on this. You can post a question over in the Ask A Vet Expert forums. We have a Geriatric forum especially for these kind of issues. (SHHHH...
Avatar f tn Hi, my dog, she is a mutt is about 2 or 3 years old. We took her in July '07. She was a stray. We took her to the vet for shots and a check-up about Aug.'07. She was fine. In March'08 she had a seizure. We rushed her to the vet. She stiffened up but at the same time was shaking, drooling, lost control of her bowels and had a faraway look in her eyes. The vet said she had an epileptic seizure and gave her some Valium for me to give her if she has another seizure.
Avatar n tn s geriatric diet and takes her pills in soft canned food ( not Hills). Her bun and creatinine are a little high, but she was drinking a lot even before the meds. Do you have any suggestions as to meds, diet, or cause of spasms and loss of motor control?
Avatar f tn Most are quite small from pen point to dime size but he developed on that has gone from quarter to golf ball size in a short time. My vet who I do trust says in such an old dog this is expected, it's only a fatty tumor and as long as it isn't hurting him (which its not) just leave it as the surgery would be more dangerous then leaving it. He has also developed moderate arthritis in his rear legs which make them stiff an hard to move.
649848 tn?1534633700 I ate out this morning before remembering to weigh; will weigh in tomorrow. I've gotten back to my exercise routine and have been eating about the way I do in a usual week, so maybe my weight has just kept level. We'll see. The weather finally shifted away from being extremely cold; in fact, it was 60 degrees yesterday.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if a dog (like a human) is aware when having a grand mal seizure?
Avatar f tn Thanks...seen some dog food in the vets today..going back tomorrow to get some.thanks again....
Avatar m tn on checking this poo next day I discovered that it is a whole rope type toy and he had to poo it out between seizures is it possible that this is the issue that hastened his having fits as his blood pressure was sky hi in combination with his kidney problem as he did not seem to be in a serious stage until his breathing problem started is it likely earlier in the week he swallowed it and it put his blood pressure up .
Avatar f tn and being that he lived to 14 (which is very geriatric for a shepherd-sized dog), it sounds like you were taking great care of him! Deepest sympathies.
Avatar m tn Also, I wanted to know if anyone has tried Keppra for seizure activity in dogs and if so, how did that work? Our 6 year old French Mastiff had a seizure on Thursday night - first one ever. He walked across our bedroom floor, stood in front of our open door and acted like he saw someone in the hallway. I sat up and said "Archie, there is no-one there. Go back to bed." Then he looked like he was rubbing his shoulder on the clothes hamper and I thought it looked really weird.
Avatar m tn My 2 yo, 100lb dog has frequent tremors in his leg (s). They typically occur when he sits but he can also have them when he lays or sleeps. The vet believes phenobarbital will help but he doesn't have seizures. Does anyone have experience with this?
Avatar f tn However, I have found that if I put a blanket over my dog to prevent him from biting me I can hold him in my lap in complete darkness. This seems to soothe him and make the episode much shorter. My dog does not lose bladder control though so this may not be for your situation. Also, the vet told me that the dog does not know what is happening and afterwards does not even remember. They also said that they are not feeling any pain while this is going on.
Avatar f tn shes due back at the vets tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone else had seen these symptoms in there dogs after a seizure, getting worried that something might be wrong...i would really appreciate any information...thank you....
1423357 tn?1511085442 When that happened his mom and dad knew he was going to have a seizure which in turn allowed them time to put on his protective helmet and get him to an area were the odds of him hurting himself was less. Not all dogs react the same way when they sense a seizure is going to happen, that just happens to be his.
Avatar n tn Our dog has not had a seizure in over a year. (On phenobarb it was still every 2 weeks or so). Best of luck!
Avatar f tn Tonight my dog started to huff behind me, I got up to move her to the tile and noticed that her eyes were rolled back in her head she was slightly moving her head around like she was attempting to open her eyes. I sat beside her and tried to comfort her and kept telling her to wake up. Then i had her lay down and was rubbing her belly. She was upside down with her head in my lap when her eyes finally went back to normal.
Avatar m tn We took our 7 year old dog(breed unknown, she is an adoption that came in from Puerto Rico) to the vet at 3:00PM on Monday to have her nails trimmed and she had a seizure, presumably due to the stress of the situation. This was the first time she has ever had a seizure. Then she had another on Tuesday morning at around 9:00AM, then another on Tuesday night at around 7:30PM, then another on Wednesday morning at about 7:00AM.
Avatar m tn The best plan for now may be to shut the Morki in the bathroom whenever this happens again until the whole seizure is over and your other dog has recovered. Just shut her in in a kind but firm way, tell her to 'stay' and 'wait' with a gentle and steady voice. And don't let her out until you are sure the crisis has passed. I presume the vet knows about these seizures? Has any medication been prescribed so far?
Avatar f tn Last night I was 45 minutes late to giving my dog the phenbarbatol ( sp), and his thyroid medication. This morning he had a mild seizure, first one that I am awear of since 3 months. Could being late have caused it this morning? I added a quarter more medication today to each of his dose ( twice a day). I called the vet and they want to recheck his blood levels, which I will do next week.
570306 tn?1222713377 It can sometimes take several hours, sometimes a full day, for a dog to completely return to normal after a seizure. Your vet's first reaction in doing nothing was reasonable. Sometimes seizures happen and that's the one and only seizure a dog will ever have. However, now that your dog has had a second seizure and one that lasted so terribly long, you need to go back to your vet. Your dog will likely be put on phenobarbitol as a seizure preventive.
Avatar m tn Eighty years old is not that old. I would suggest he seek out a physician that specializes in geriatric medicine. It appears he needs a look-see by another physician.
Avatar f tn In the last few weeks, my toy poddle, age 14, has had sudden dizzy spells where he becomes unbalance and will start to sway from side to side. During these spells, he tries to walk it off, but he just looks like his walking drunk. I'm really concerned because you can see him trying to shake these spells off but he can't. The spells last about 10 seconds. Right before one of this happens he usually starts coughing. I don't know if the coughing and dizzy spells are related.
Avatar m tn Hello Johnny...IMO, NO this is not normal! Normally after a seizure, a dog will be tired, but be pretty much normal after 20 or so minutes.....Though not as common, 24 hrs. is possible...... Most Vets don't give much thought to 1 seizure...It's after a second or third that more attention is paid....I personally would be back at your Vet Monday to better evaluate your guy..... The elevated Liver enzymes may be a clue, but these continuing effects (Ataxia) is again, NOT normal!
Avatar f tn Your chi is definitely having seizures. You'll need to have your vet examine him to determine WHY they're happening. If no cause is evident, then it's called "idiopathic" epilepsy, which only means they don't know why these misfires happen in the brain. Seizures can usually be well-controlled with medication like phenobarbitol, so make sure you talk to your vet about it. Our neighbor has a huge labrador retreiver who has had seizures most of his life.
Avatar f tn My dog is 9 years old. He started having sudden onset seizures about a year ago. About a month apart. Then for 24 hours he has cluster seizures and then fine again for a month. Very said puliminary tests look good but to go into more detailed testing is much more expensive so we couldn't afford it but he was fine otherwise so just once a month we would make him comfortable for the day, allow the seizures to pass and continued on with life. This past episode has been so much worse.
