As for weight gain, this drug causes the most people to suffer weight gain of any antidepressant on the market. It's often given to the elderly who have stopped eating because it makes almost everyone want to eat while taking it. On the other hand, there have been people on this forum who found this the best anti-anxiety drug they ever took and who gained no weight at all on it, so everything depends on the person.
Now that I have stopped taking Geodon, I would like to know if anyone out there has been through the same experience with weight gain AND if weight loss is a side effect of coming off of Geodon? If not, is it easier to lose weight once you are off of the medication? I have my mind back and now I want my body back! Hope to hear some good news!
Weight gain is one potential side effect of Cymbalta but it would also depend on your other medications and if they have this side effect as well. It would be worthwhile to speak to your psychiatrist about this and they could see how to adjust and/or change your medications as needed and also how this specific side effect could be addressed.
Weight gain is a common side-effect of SSRIs in general - paxil in particular. I have friends who lost weight on paxil with a strict diet and exercise program. But I also have friends on paxil who could not lose the weight no matter what they did. The weight will come off when you discontinue the medication - or switch to a medication that has less of a chance of causing weight gain (ie. Prozac). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood.
Thanks for the response, first and foremost, I finally feel understood as I'm new to discussion boards and how lucky was I to find such a warm comfortable place as this one? I didn't know Lithium takes so long to kick in? Most all meds I've tried you notice the difference within a month so I have yet to learn about the potential side effects but and hopeful benefits but at this point I'm ready to go for the big guns so to speak.

i didnt really get bad side effects from lexapro, except weight gain and sexual side effects. i have been taking lexapro for about 3 months, i am trying to taper off of it because of the weight gain, but within two days i start getting these horrible symptoms, like tingling, burning sensation, dysphoria, suicidal thoughts, its very scary, so i am back on them, every time i try and quit, i feel like i am going to have a nervous breakdown.
So, I just got out of a psych hospital for the 3rd time in 3 months. I was diagnosed with PTSD and mood disorder. I am on a host of drugs that leave me zombie-like. I am taking Lamictal, Seroquel, Klonopin, Trazadone and Lithium. My Lithium dosage is 1050 mg a day. I am so tired and the weight gain and hair falling out are just two of the most troubling symptoms. My dr. doesn't even want me on an anti-depressant which I think will help. I am missing the occasional glass of wine.
Has anyone tried taking rozerem to help sleep when tapering? I tried Abien a few years ago and it wired me all night. Last night, I took ,1 clonidine and 2 soma and I just knew that would put me to sleep and all it did was give me a big buzz and i was wired for a few hours.

Yes but there is the issue of long term side effects. As a person with advanced tardive dyskinesia I am vividly aware of this. I have a friend whose mother has Parkinson's and she is being given Seroquel as a sleeping pill and I was told even by my psychiatrist that its "the wrong medication".
My doctor gave me Lunesta to sleep. I also tried Rozerem. Lunesta worked GREAT!!!!! The only side effect I had was strange taste in my mouth when it started to kick in. But I would fall asleep and STAY asleep for 7 to 8 hours. When I wake up, Im wide awke and feel rested. If not, after the first 3 nights of not sleeping I would have been in the hospital because I felt like I was going crazy. Rozerem did not work as fast at nite and I did wake up and was sleepy in the morning.
When on the Depo, the best way to avoid gaining weight is diet and exercise. Some people gain the weight and some lose weight. When I was on Depo, I gained weight, I also didn't exercise and I wasn't on a diet. My friend, however, lost weight while on Depo, she also didn't exercise and wasn't on a diet. Depo affects people differently. If you were dieting and exercising and you gained weight, you may want to choose a different method.
Sometimes you can avoid this side effect by either taking wellbutrin, a very stimulating antidepressant, or combining wellbutrin with an ssri to counteract this effect. I don't think constipation would lead to the weight gain, but three pounds isn't really much of a gain. We all fluctuate some normally.
Older tri-cyclic antidepressants and Tetracyclic antidepressant cause weight gain. It is proven and a well known side effect. Many mood stabilizers can also cause weight gain.
One theroy involving weight gain and SSRI meds is that often times when people are severly depressed and suffering from anxiety, they do not eat near as much. When we start feeling better by taking AD medication our appitites often return, thus producing weight gain as a result of taking the SSRI medication.
