Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal used to treat

risperdal

1515545 tn?1291395764 Risperdal is one of the most common antipsycotics used to treat personality or general mood disorders. Being that there are only about 5 or 6 newer class generation anti-psycotics, I would say risperidal is most common and generally well tolerated.
Avatar f tn I was under the impression that Risperidonel was not be used for children under the age of 11 (although I have heard of it being used to treat severely autistic children and also schizophrenia, bi-polar and other related psychotic disorders). I suppose whether your child will be on this medication for the rest of her life will depend upon her diagnosis - whether the mental health issue is a life-long problem or just a short-term one.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar n tn We always use the same pharmcy, on the 19th of Dec we picked up what was supposed to be risperdal that said it was the same just a generic. It ended up beening Ropinirole.Ropinirole Oral is used to treat the following: Parkinson's Disease, Extreme Discomfort in Calves when Sitting or Lying Down. My 7 year old took about 9mg over a 4 day period before I figured out it was the new med that is making him totally different.
1516809 tn?1345082764 The reality of the situation that I am finding in my particular instance, or that of my mother is that any of the anti-psychotic medications used to treat the behavioral issues of an Alzheimer's patient carry 'black-box" warnings. The result a Catch-22 of how do you control the behavior, provide a quality of life, and minimize the risk.
Avatar n tn And yes, abilify, risperdal and intuniv probably are all used to treat the same thing. Although intuniv is also listed for hyperactivity as well as tics. Hopefully, his school is well aware of his situation (he has a 504 or an IEP?) and are working to allow his handicaps. He is at an age where the school work is getting much harder and that certainly adds to the stress levels.
2010625 tn?1329372056 Last I read Geodon can send a patient into mania if they have the potential for that, even though it can be used to treat mania. The side effects should subside after a few weeks.
Avatar n tn He takes 3 mg of tenex, 2 mg of risperdal and 10 mg of prozac. He still is impulsive and gets into arguments. It seems to be an ongoing problem to adjust his meds. We see the psychaitrist monthly. He has been on other meds and they either made him worse or stopped working. We used Abilify to 15 mg and it stopped being effective. All stimulants made him hyper and agitated. I find this is a very time consuming difficult process. I am recording his daily behaviors.
Avatar m tn You need more information prollyadhd. Risperdal is used for a wide variety of things at this point appropriately and effectively and adhd is one of them but not usually as a sole therapy for it. It's used to as an add on to treat it. So, something seems a little amiss here in terms of the information and the meds prescribed. Definitely check in with your doctor.
Avatar m tn How to live without thinking without worring? Seroquel was like a god for me. When i used to take 600 mg i used to work so much i used to think so much, i was creative, i used to repair friends computer, used to self study. Now after risperdal if i think little also something stops, if i worry little also somthing makes tension on head, i became disable to work fast. slow makes. Then i took seroquel and started to feel fresh and started to move outside.
Avatar f tn Oh, you know, I had the same problem starting at 16. It was because my prolactin levels were too high ... caused by a medication (Risperdal) I was taking. The doctors had me have an MRI in case there was a tumor on my pituitary gland, but no it was just the medication. So ... go to the doctor, tell him/her the issue s/he'll draw some blood I assume and see where it goes from there.
Avatar n tn Proate 500 ---- Proate is used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug, primarily in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and, less commonly, major depression. It is also used to treat migraine headaches and schizophrenia. Zosert 50------ Zosert is a selective serotonin reputate inhibitor. It's used for depression, anxiety, ocd, panic. Sizodon 2 is an atypical antipsychotic. Risperdal is the name in my country.
Avatar f tn Risperidone is an antipsychotic drug. It is normally used to treat people with serious mental health problems like schizophrenia. It is a newer type of antipsychotic drug and may have fewer side effects than older antipsychotic drugs. Risperidone has sometimes been given to people in the later stages of dementia.
1142551 tn?1264736930 My son was prescribed risperdal a few months ago, but just in this past week after his psych eval. and really hurting his younger brother I have decided to go with it. I wanted it to be a last resort. I have tried dieting, prescribed sleep aids because I thought he was tired (he hardly slept), schedules, pictures, everything. And the aggression just got worse. Like I said the risperdal was a lqst resort. He will be 4 in Sept. and his dose is .
559509 tn?1216180446 I show mixed tendencies ( is that type 1 ),and my Dr gave me Risperdal for what appeard to be a manic state( I was off all meds at the time except Welbutrin which may have excaserbated my mania). My manic states don't last that long and it confuses me cause I am in somewhat of denial about my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder which i've had for three years now. I get intense anger and irratability for no reason other than I get pissed off eaily.
309783 tn?1271958229 She returned from the doctors today with a prescription for concurrent risperdal for OCD. I know her very well. We used to work together and now that we've left work we spend all day together. In the evenings we go to each others houses for supper, our kids all play together and we frequently spend the night at each other's house. We are in constant text contact. My worry is that she does not show any symptoms of what i understand to be OCD.
Avatar n tn I have a question. Are drugs in the benzo family ever used to treat seizures? As in Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, etc? I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.
886552 tn?1241590297 I think the reason for that, is that you have to get used to your emotions being a little bit more subtle (Which, if I am not mistaken, is the whole point of the exercise). Give it a little time and see if you get a bit more used to it. You will most likely find that the disconnected feeling is just your current perception due to the elevated moods that you are used to.
Avatar f tn Some anti psychotic meds are used to treat tourettes, but I have not personally read or heard the two previously mentioned meds being the first used to treat tourettes. I know of haldol being used. Ritalin is very popular for ADD/ADHD. Celexa is an SSRI which is used for depression and can also be used to treat OCD. Once again, I am no doctor, but I would recommend getting a second opinion, maybe more thorough. How many times did your son see the psychiatrist?
Avatar f tn Although you are only on a very small dose your body has got used to having that for the last 3 months. Its not going to take long to taper off and surely its better to do that than maybe having some horrid withdrawal effect.
1515545 tn?1291395764 Lithium is commonly used to treat Bipolar disorder, and Risperidal for general mood or personality disorders. Feel free to ask your psychiatrist more about the medications you are taking, you're entitled to know.
2010625 tn?1329372056 I may have to go off my Risperdal. My doctor is checking my hormone levels because my periods have stopped and I am lactating. He said if my hormone levels are high I can either add Abilify or replace the Risperdal altogether. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any medications that I could replace the Risperdal with. I don't go see my psychiatrist for another 2 months.
Avatar m tn Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.
Avatar n tn Zyprexa is a strong anti psychotic which should only be used as one.It should not to be used as a sleeping aid and should only be used under supervision of a Psychiatrist. For sleeping one could use something like Trazodone,Ambien or Rozerem.
