Avatar n tn Dilantin sodium blocks voltage sensitive sodium channels in neurons which leads to a delay in neuronal electrical recovery from inactivation. It is related to barbiturates in chemical structure. It prevents the electrical spread of a focus of irritable tissue from entering normal tissue. Its toxicity depends on the route of administration, duration, exposure and dosage. The route of administration is the most important determinant of toxicity. I hope this helps.

1125820 tn?1265284446 You did mention that you have already tried an anticonvulsant, Topamax, but the other often prescribed anticonvulsant is Divalproex sodium/sodium valproate. In fact, Divalproex sodium/sodium valproate has been shown more effective than Topamax in trials. So, you may want to talk to your doctor about Divalproex sodium/sodium valproate. You may also want to try Botox Injections. You may also want to talk to your doctor about Calcium Channel Blocker.

Avatar n tn I am taking Levothyroxine Sodium every morning, on an empty stomach. I know I am not to take the medicine with drinks such as orange juice, but rather take it with water. My question is, can I add Mio, calorie-free water enhancer to my water and get the same results as taking the medicine with plain water? It's easier for me to drink more water if I add the flavoring.

The medication still helps with catatplexy though and I am able to sleep without waking up for the two 4 hours segements. My last sleep study showed 2.% TST in stage 1, 61.5 % TST in stage 2, 35.3 in stage 3, 0% in stage 4 and 1.1 in REM. Previous studies have never shown any stage 4 sleep and up to 86% in stage 2.

Avatar f tn AI is basically when the body cannot hold sodium and the loss of sodium is when the body has a crisis. Usually, when sodium goes down, sodium drops and potassium rises. There are a few of us where both sodium and potassium drop. Until you know about potassium, you need to add salt and if you feel bad, go for salt (but avoid potassium loaded foods like bananas etc) as sodium and potassium take care of themselves.
Avatar m tn s on antihypertensive (amlodepine) and low dose hydrochlorthiazide. Her BUN, creatinine, SGOT, SGPT, sodium and potassium were taken and they were all normal, thus she was started with aldactone 2 weeks ago. Repeat blood exams were taken (for some reason sodium and potassium were not included) - this time BUN is 10.3 mmol/L (ref value - 2.5 to 6.5); creatinine was 1.3 mg/dl (ref value - 0.7 to 1.5). This reading shows a markedly elevated BUN and a normal creatinine.
