Avatar f tn Ramelteon has not been shown to produce dependence and has shown no potential for abuse, and the withdrawal and rebound insomnia that is typical with other GABA modulators is not present in ramelteon.
Avatar f tn An article published in 2006 stated that “The two newest sedative hypnotic medications, eszopiclone and ramelteon do not appear to offer additional benefit and are high cost alternatives to the older agents. Further studies with active comparators are necessary prior to identifying their ideal place in therapy”. (http://pharmacy.oregonstate.edu/drug_policy/pages/dur_board/newsletter/articles/volume8/DURV8I1.html). You might want to refer to an article on ramelteon in chronic insomnia.
603015 tn?1329862973 I am aware that these are supposed to be used short term, they are not addictive but now 4 months on I am still taking them, my mood is much more settled but im not completley right yet, I have tried a few times to try and go to sleep but I am wide awake tossing and turning and I end up taking one in the middle of the night anyway. I have had the whole bath thing, no stimulents, relaxation techniques etc.. I just seem to have lost the ability to go to sleep.
Avatar f tn She started getting a real bad itch which added to her not sleeping at night. Melatonin helps her at night and she finally found an over the counter skin cream that has stopped her itch completely. A company called Seacret makes a skin cream, among other products. Just use the skin cream, all the products are supposed to contain minerals from the Dead Sea.
Avatar n tn Specifically, the delayed sleep phase syndrome. He prescribed Ramelteon to help her fall asleep at night. So far, the sleeping pill seems to work but in a subtle way. If she does not prep herself for sleep, sleep will not come. It has gotten so bad that she cannot remember the last time she slept and felt rested. There is a bit more to it then just a sleeping problem. I am not sure if this is related to it but she has laps of time where she can't remember specifically what she did.
Avatar f tn Does melatonin give you all three stages of REM or is it mostly to help with the most superficial phase, the dream phase? I understand that melatonin is a hormone secreted at night, and how it is not a drug, but I am just wondering if there is a link between dreams and melatonin.
1063764 tn?1272821064 It's hard to see exactly where they would interact, since they work on completely different physiological processes. Then again, everyone has their own peculiarities when it comes to this stuff. Melatonin is a hormone made naturally by the body to set the body clock and as an antioxidant. It doesn't affect serotonin in any direct way, but obviously if you're not sleeping well it won't help serotonin do its thing.
Avatar f tn Is melatonin and welbutrin incompatible? I read a post just now that gives me the impression that melatonin works against the AD? I'm going to google this...

397118 tn?1219762250 I have found success with the sublingual form of Melatonin- It looks and tastes like a mint, and you just pop it in your mouth and suck on it 15 minutes prior to bedtime. Experiment with dosage, but start very small, at 1/2 mg. If that doesn't help you sleep, take another 1/2. If you have trouble staying alert and focused the next day, or if getting out of bed is difficult, lower your dose.
527657 tn?1214051850 I usually watch a little tv, read a book, then get sleepy, and fall asleep. It really helped me, and I take it every now and then. It is natural and not habit forming, which I really like.
4341997 tn?1514588688 I have taken Melatonin for about 20 years and I am now trying to taper off. It is a hormone and I don't think it is healthy for long term use. My standard does was 3 mg but one doctor had me on 20 mg for the antioxidant effect for a while. Funny at that dose it does not caused any sleepiness. I've taken the mcg's and up to that 20 mg and the small doses did help me sleep.

Avatar m tn Melatonin is a nautrally produced by our brains to help us sleep. We produce a lot of it when we are young, but as we age our brains produce less and less of it. That is why many older people sleep for only 2 -3 three hours and then wake up. I believe melatonin has been believed to be a healing agent because when the body is ill, it can be more easily restored during sleep. Melatonin can't heal us, but our bodies are more able to fight off disease when it is well-rested.
Avatar n tn If a little extra melatonin in her system could cause her IUD birth control device stop working than I strongly urge her to never turn off the lights as that will result in melatonin being produced by her body and lead to the IUD failure as well.
1302779 tn?1287405029 I have trouble sleeping and anxiety and I thought the Melatonin would help. It made me have very strange dreams which just increased my anxiety. Just my experience with it. Good luck to you!

Avatar n tn Im about 8 weeks pregnant and i want to know if it is safe for me to take melatonin.
Avatar f tn I just wanted your thoughts and experiences with melatonin. Has anyone been given the OK to take it? Or told not to? I figured since it was a natural hormone that it would be safe. Still waiting to hear back from my doctor. Just trying to find ways to help me sleep better. I'm 21 weeks. Thank you in advance.
362692 tn?1248639193 ve been suffering from fatigue but not able to sleep much so I know how frustrated you are. I started taking the Melatonin and about a half hour before bed I drink a cup of Celestial Seasoning Sleepy Time Tea and a Swiss Herbal tablet called Sleep Well. It does seem to help somewhat and I am getting more sleep than I had been. I hope that helps.
Avatar f tn Long term use of indomethacin can result in gastrointestinal adverse effects. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by pineal gland and is very similar in chemical structure to indomethacin without the risk of gastro intestinal side effects. That’s the reason melatonin is now being considered as an effective treatment option. Patients with history of severe allergies are advised not to take melatonin in general. Hope this answers your question!
