1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
Avatar f tn My son (19) was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. At time of hospitalization he refused an MRI. Subsequently he agreed and a subarachnoid cyst 6cm X 4.5 cm anterior to right temporal lobe was found. He has c/o forgetfulness, h/a, and had a severe manic episode with auditory hallucinations and paranoia. Could all this be related to his cyst? No family history of bipolar disorder. Also, what would treatment be? Surgery? Expected recovery time? What are chances mania will recurr?
202665 tn?1248806733 ve just been incorrect to start with and as the others said, bipolar disorder can have psychotic features and you could develop schizophrenia symptoms down the road alongside the bipolar disorder, but that would be schizoaffective disorder. Also, in the new DSM-V they have currently decided to totally deleting all the subtypes of schizophrenia and just going to diagnose solely schizophrenia.
Avatar n tn Actually if bipolar disorder has psychotic features, the person in question can hear voices from what I know. I also even knew someone with psychotic major depression who heard voices.
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
1201916 tn?1277603095 It works better than Geodon did for me but I take it for a psychotic disorder rather than a mood disorder but bipolar disorder can have psychotic symptoms and every medicine works differently for each person.
3579868 tn?1348739509 I know of four bipolar 1 with or without psychotic features, bipolar 2, bipolar nos, and cyclothimia. With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in.
2699259 tn?1344210945 My mother has Bipolar 1 with psychotic features, dx at the age of 48, now 66 yrs old. I believe she has struggled with it her whole life, I know I can remember her having psychotic episodes when I was as young as 5-6 years of age. I learned to hide her behavior very well, but I'm glad she finally got her dx when I was in my teens, it's still a challenge very single day for the both of us (and also for my family), it's like I am the parent and she is the child.
Avatar f tn Holiday blues can affect anyone, especially people with things like bipolar disorder. Depressive episodes I don't think are required for bipolar disorder 1 to be diagnosed and only mania is required but they frequently occur. With psychotic features just means you experience psychotic symptoms when manic and/or depressed but particularly while manic.
Avatar f tn com/health/bipolar-disorder/bipolar-hallucinations Schizophrenia follows a pattern different than bipolar. Are you trying to decide which is going on for your son or does he already have a bipolar diagnosis?
12268405 tn?1427853361 I have had psychotic breaks with the depression cycle of my bipolar disorder. However, I do know people with major depression and situational depression who had episodes of visual hallucination. The hallucinations were short lived as well as their depression, meaning it only lasted for a year or 2. They didn't get hospitalized, because they were still able to function and their hallucinations did not affect their functioning so much.
Avatar f tn He has been diagnosed with clinical depression years ago, and just recently was given a medicine that treats the symptoms of bipolar disorder. he said the side effects were not good and he quit taking the medication. Two days ago he got angry over something trivial and again today slamming doors and yelling at me and our kids.
Avatar f tn I believe that Bipolar Disorder can have a consistency with the psychotic features. I have Bipolar 1 and as Xila31 said mine seems to have gotten worse as I age. I have psychotic features when I am depressed and when I am manic. I tend to be paranoid and have all sorts of hallucinations. Perhaps you should ask your or your ex's doctor for their view on it. Hope this helps some.
Avatar f tn If he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder then his diagnosis has been changed from bipolar disorder with psychotic features. The only real difference between these two is in schizoaffective disorder the psychosis happens all the time regardless of mood and in BP with psychotic features it happens with mood episodes. Anyway, he could be living in a fantasy world and truly believing all of this.
Avatar n tn There are so many different varities of bipolar as well from cyclothymia (mild bipolar) to bipolar with psychotic features to schizoaffective which is schizophrenia with aspects of bipolar (what I have and have recovered from). Too complex to discuss in a post but I'd answer specific questions. Go to "Depression Central" (for all mood disorders) for more comprehensive information. Its a great resource.
Avatar f tn I have a family member who has cyclothymia (mild bipolar) anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder which is schizophrenia with a mood disorder but was told by my psychiatrist the obsessive thoughts I had and still have to some extent were to mask psychotic thoughts. The best way I found to approach treatment was to underestand how it works and why its being prescribed.
569043 tn?1216845586 Hi, I have been diagnosed with Manic Bipolar Disorder and I am currently taking Abilify. I was simply wondering if this prescription can possibly affect the patterns of a menstrual cycle??
Avatar m tn Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, has nothing to do with anxiety. One CAN have an anxiety disorder and also be bipolar but the two conditions are not linked.
1044813 tn?1370494406 Hi there - Thanks for the suggestion. Seroquel is an anti-psychotic medication, so feel free to use the anti-psychotic meds value on the tracker to track your use of Seroquel.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar f tn Bipolar has no aspects of psychosis. With bipolar with psychotic features, during a period of moodswings (mania, depression) a person has auditory hallucinations (hears voices) or visual hallucations or has delusions (perceives things that are not in reality). With schizoaffective disorder, a person can have hallucinations or delusions even when the mood is euthymic (normal).
