Avatar f tn t want anything to do with the low protein foods offered. What are some alternatives if any? We have a good vet, she is frustrated too. Husband and I have decided that if she doesn't want anything to do with these foods, which we have had only limited success or none with, we are going to let her enjoy the life she has left in peace and happiness. Dr agrees. Do you?

Avatar f tn Sorry to hear about your 'Best Friend'. Just wanted to add, that I didn't see where you mentioned whether or not your Vet did Urinalysis? IF NOT, you should request such to see if there is 'Protein Loss' indicated in Urine. A COMPLETE urinalysis will indicate 'Protein Loss',....indicating kidney malfunction,....before......the blood test.

Avatar f tn t have an effect on your risk of kidney stones. Continue eating calcium-rich foods unless your doctor advises otherwise. Ask your doctor before taking calcium supplements, though, as these have been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones. You may reduce the risk by taking supplements with meals. Ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian who can help you plan meals that will help reduce your risk of kidney stones.
Avatar f tn m hearing a lot about kidney issues and wonder if my dog is at risk because of his high protein diet.
Avatar n tn That being said, a low carb diet might mean you are eating way too much protein, or it could mean you just eat somewhat more protein. Eating too much protein can cause kidney problems. Statins, as far as I know and I'm not an expert, are more of a problem for the liver and the joints. Talk to your doc, but if when you got the test the doc didn't call you in for further investigation it meant most likely the doc didn't see any real problem.
Avatar m tn been giving him boiled chicken and hotdogs. Any help on low protein foods appreiciated. He has perked up so much since I brought him home and can get him to eat. he has also lost a ton weigh down to only 60 lbs. How long do dogs usually live with this?
Avatar m tn My doctor told me that taking naprosyn over a prolonged period of time could result in kidney damage. After I decreased my protein intake and shifted to Tylenol my BUN & cratinine scores dropped.
Avatar f tn Should some of these enter the blood stream, the ONLY other organ that comes to the rescue is the kidney, that constantly filters the blood and this explains the dehydration, as the kidney now is working overtime filtering out the toxins using extra water. Water is the best detoxifying agent! Also another function of the kidneys is water regulation. When chronic conditions cause the kidney to overwork, kidney dysfunction is inevitable.
Avatar m tn Yes, kidney and liver function panels come back within range. I eat gluten, dairy, sugar free and don't eat any processed foods. I do check all labels before buying anything. I read somewhere to try to eliminate all foods high in B6. That seems to be fish, meat, poultry, nuts, legumes, as well as bananas and apples and some other foods. My question is, how do I get protein if I eliminate those foods?
Avatar m tn Hi, I have kidney failure do to diabetes. What kinds of foods or supplements will help or hurt my kidneys? I've heard that co q10 is benefical. Any help would be beneficial!
Avatar f tn Foods to be limited are those, which can irritate the urinary tract like fruit juices, spicy foods, very acidic foods, decreased intake of salt, and protein since these might be hard on the one kidney that is remaining. Pear nectar, can be taken. a well balanced diet is encouraged to promote healing and good bowel action. Avoid constipation by drinking 6-8 water glasses, increase roughage in diet, prune or orange juice, and over the counter laxative etc. hope these help. Take care.
Avatar n tn I would recommend consulting with a kidney dietician. High sodium diets with high protein and dairy foods can over work kidneys already overworking due to impaired functionality. Food can either be our medicine, or our poison. Anything to reduce the extra workload of the kidneys is beneficial!!! I wish you both well!!
Avatar n tn Oxalate is a leading component of many kidney stones with calcium oxalate being the most common type of stone. Foods to avoid: Spinach Bran flakes Rhubarb Beets Potato chips French fries Nuts and nut butters These are high in oxalate. Some are considered healthy so may surprise you to see them on the list of things to avoid. Many are afraid of calcium because of the name of this type of stone, calcium oxalate, but in actuality the calcium is helpful in not allowing stones to form.
Avatar f tn He also needs a referral to a registered dietician who can come up with a recommended diet with actual sample menus that take into account the need to eat low fat, low cholesterol, low sugar and low purine foods. It is too confusing to come up with the right calorie count and mix of foods based on the research we have been doing on our own. He is continuing with too rapid a weight loss.He drinks enough water and is frustrated with his health issues from recent months.
Avatar m tn Low salt diet, avoid potassium rich foods like potatoes and tomatoes and dark colored pop - except rootbeer is okay, and keep your protein moderate (no more protein than the size of your closed fist - two times a day). (if you google you can find the whole list). And keeping your high blood pressure under control. If you haven't already an appointment with a nephrologist may be in order.
Avatar f tn She has quickly moved to Stage 3 kidney disease. We originally attributed her failing kidney function to her food. We have been feeding her gluten free food because of her allergies, but they have a high protein and sometimes higher sodium and phosphorus content. After reading countless labels, we think we have found the best combination, but her kidney function continues to decrease.
Avatar f tn Today our foods are GMO's, processed, organic/natural etc. The concern is overwhelming especially because one has to eat! But are we eating ourselves to the grave or to health? The truth of our labelling is not necessarily helping one to remain wholesome! How can one make the best choice today?

Avatar n tn Hi, Firstly, you need to avoid foods which are rich in sodium like fast foods, pickles, soy sauce, Chinese foods. Potassium also needs to be decreased by reducing the intake of nuts, fruits like bananas, peaches, oranges, apricots. The dark cola drinks also need to be avoided as they are rich in phosphorus which tends to accumulate.
Avatar f tn scrambled egg whites (but not the yolk which is high in phosphorus), white sticky rice, with a little organic honey or I mixed with a tiny bit of butter (also low in phosphorus), with a small amt of boiled chicken breast or lean (I used 93%) ground beef. You can also try green beans--my dog loves them. Sweet potato is another option, if there's not a potassium problem--my dog loved them, I boiled and mashed it up, adding a little bit of butter and cinnamon for flavor.
Avatar f tn If you are not home cooking for Floyd, then try a canned (definitely no dry foods or kibbles) kidney specific dog food such as Hill kd renal. Unfortunately, all kidney specific dog foods are fairly unpalatable, so it may be worth adding a few things that will help entice Floyd into eating it. This includes a very small amount (a desertspoon at most) of cooked chopped green cabbage, which is tasty to dogs and will help guard against stomach ulcers.
Avatar f tn 20 to 30 percent from protein (unless the person has kidney disease); 30-35 percent come from fat, (mostly mono- and polyunsaturated fats); and at least 20-35 grams of fiber. To initiate and continue weight reduction, a modest goal of one pound every one to two weeks is advised by reducing daily caloric intake by 250 to 500 calories. Total daily calories should not be less than 1,000 to 1,200 for women and 1,200 to 1,600 for men.
