I hear ya... I've been on .4 Flomax since January and its hard to get off of it. It basically tells the bladder neck muscles = "ok we are going to do your job now, take a break"... so to speak.. but when you stop it seems neither the muscles or the drug obviously are doing the job and they tighten back up and I get he urine retention again... Its very frustrating because I was doing exceptionally well before trying to stop.
My question is really about my father; he is 78 years old in general good health. He takes 5 mg blood pressure med and he takes Flomax daily. When he first started taking Flomax; which he needs to be able to urinate or as he says to keep his plumbing working, anyway, he would have dizzy spells. His doctor said this was normal, a side effect of Flomax. But now lately he has been passing out; I think that is unusual for any medication and I'm worried there may be something else going on.
Sometimes it would be treated with antibiotics other times Flomax. Either way they all resolved easily after a week or so. fast forward to a month ago I had an external hemorrhoid develop and also had urgency and frequency. Doc said it was related to the hemorrhoid and gave me a cream. the issue resolved within a couple days. A month later I went to an urgent care prior to Christmas for the same issue and the doc said prostatitis after doing a DRE. Said it was firm but culture was clean.
I'm having the same problems on Flomax with the retro. I'm also scared about the loss of strength stated on some forums.
it says that Flomax relaxes the muscles of the prostate and bladder neck so it seems like it could improve blood flow to the prostate and help treat a prostate infection like I've had with shooting pains for months now.
Propose that your partner try Avodart. I think it really helps with prostate enlargement. That is what the television commercials say anyhow.
Unfortunately it also can cause a large reduction in semen production.
AND women wanting to become pregnant should NEVER touch the pill as it can cause birth defects if they are exposed at all to it.
You can Google Avodart read all of this yourself from a variety of sites, including Avodart's manufacturer.
He may not have been emptying his bladder even with the flomax and he may have developed further urinary retention. If he has taken any decongestants or antihistamines, they may have worked against the drug and, again, resulted in further emptying difficulties.
Call the urologist to discuss it. He probably will need to be seen.

Thanks for the quick reply Dr Veena. Another question for you: should I take Flomax BEFORE taking Cipro? I've heard taking Flomax and hour or 2 before will soften the prostate and allow the antibiotic to better penetrate the prostate? Does it matter if I take them in the morning or evening, or is the rule just be consistent?

observation if another biopsy done in 04/09 shows increase in positive cores to 3 or more or if any one core shows 50%+ positive for cancer? Also, is there any current opinion regarding use of Avodart or Proscar while in Watchful Waiting mode? I understand there would be a likely reduction in PSA, but that new PSA baseline be established and return to monitoring of PSA velocity. Not sure what, if any, benefit this would provide.
Flomax can reduce the amouht of seman that you produce. It would be unusual though to have this production reduced down to zero unless the man was ejaculating very often. In general terms Flomax is a useful medication with very few side-effects..

I've been taking tamsulosin for 3 or 4 years now after my urologist prescribed it for BPH. I have what they call Neurogenic bladder. Probably very close to your description. Sometimes I have to concentrate to enpty my bladder, but if I can't go, I can self-cath. If it is done under the hygenic conditions, infections can be avoided.
This is something you need to discuss with your doctor, so he can see if you need some medication. There are things out there for people like us that can help.
