Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol side effects migraine

Avatar m tn I used up to 160 mg of Propranolol before my anxiety kick in to manage my migraine headache and I had no side-effects at all... For the tachycardia, low dose of 10-20 mg x 3 a day will be enough for me. That dose seem probably ridiculous for someone with high blood pressure, but for me it's what I need, taking more will just lower the blood pressure and lowering too much the blood pressure is as bad as having hign blood pressure...
Avatar f tn When did you start taking Propranolol 20 mg? Side effects of propranolol include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, depression, memory loss, fever, lightheadedness, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, cold extremities, sore throat, and shortness of breath( ref: http://www.medicinenet.com/propranolol/page2.htm). It is possible that your symptoms are related to the medication you are taking.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Hi MsConfusedone, You mention that you have been on almost everything, can you be more specific? It would help knowing exactly what you have tried so that I could suggest medications that you have not tried. Also, how many migraines do you get per month? Yes, most migraine medications do work well for most people. But, not everyone has the same success with all medications. For acute treatment of migraine headaches, first line treatment is triptans.
Avatar m tn Hi, sure sounds like it could be your version of a migraine. It can be a bit different for each individual. Propranolol (Inderal) is a good preventive, and a variety of triptan drugs are good abortive drugs. Ask your neuro to try you on some new things. Keep in mind that everyone is different in their tolerances and reactions to meds. But, there's enough out there that something should help.
Avatar f tn There are many migraine medications available in the market today and like any other medicine, they can cause possible side effects. Aside from medical management, migraine may also be managed by alternative therapies such as biofeedback therapy and acupuncture. These may help avoid possible side effects such as weight gain and vision problems. Hope this helps. Take care and do keep us posted.
768044 tn?1294223436 Like most of us are familiar with here (although hopefully not most of us personally!) they note the side-effects regarding kidney stones. They also note the side effect regarding weight loss which is something that most of us are personally familiar with. In the category of ANTIDEPRESSANTS: - Amitriptyline won. scientific evidence is trustworthy and strong. 3/3 for scientific effect. 3/3 for clinical effect. Lots of side-effects though.
Avatar f tn //www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/propranolol-oral-route/side-effects/drg-20071164. Being fatigued and the sleep issues may be associated with the medication and I'd talk to your doctor about that. Did the palpitations begin in the past three months when you started the medication?
Avatar f tn Wow, I think I might actually be allergic to NSAIDs, too. I've been taking them regularly since June, and about a month ago, I added yet another one to my daily routine--aspirin, to prevent strokes. I ran out of Arthrotec last week, which I take for joint pain/swelling, and discovered yesterday that I had one pill left...so I took it, because I had a lot of writing to do for a final exam and didn't want my hands to be killing me all the while...
Avatar n tn Sounds like a migraine..... It could also be the result of allergies. Have you looked into sinusitis as a possible cause/ Have you been tested for allergies? If I were you, I'd have your doctor put you on some conventional migraine medication and slowly increase the dosage until its effective for you (assuming you don't have any serious side-effects, of course).
Avatar m tn This dosage successful controlled the headaches as never befor -- without side effects. This month I learned my insurance requires me to try time-release morphine sulfate (it's cheaper). I decided to stop the oxy, but suffered withdrawal so bad I started again. I have never had this problem before with pain meds; I was surprised that such a small dose could cause these problems. Now I am wondering if switching to morphine is a good idea.
Avatar f tn Hello, I was seen in the ER today for a migraine and they gave me a mixture of compazine, benadryl, toradol and a steroid through an IV. I was wondering what possible side effects I may encounter.
Avatar f tn I didn't have migraines, but I was given a beta blocker (propranolol or Inderal) for high pressure headaches (Pseudotumor). Anyways, my doctor's theory was that it would keep my blood pressure under control, as blood pressure can rise under distress. Side effects I experienced were : fatigue, dizziness, and low blood pressure (as I didn't have high blood pressure to begin with, my blood pressure dipped too low when I didn't really need it).
Avatar f tn So I would definelty look into all the medicines he is taking and look at all the side effects and the precautions about what medicines he should not take together...I bet you will discover he is taking a lot of different medicines at the same time that is very dangerous.
Avatar n tn Since I live in Iowa (low of -24 degrees the other day), it was a side effects that really bothered me. Now I am on 240 mg of Diltiazem and no side effects but it is not controlling the rapid pulse rate very well. My husband, who has A-fib, saw a mention on one of the discussion boards he reads of Beta Blockers lowering the levels of Melatonin in some patients and causing sleep disturbances.
Avatar f tn I had my first migraine when I was 12 and they became chronic and literally everyday after two car accidents. (Rear end and head on). I am soon going to b getting my nerves on my c3-6 burned to help with the headaches and neck pain. I'm only 23 yrs old. I had to quit my career (cosmetologist) I loved it and right before my migrianes randomly became daily I had an offer to become a redken color artist and do hair in big time hair shows up on stage with many famous hairstylist.
Avatar f tn The frequency of side effects, such as headache, decreased in those who took birth control pills containing lower doses of estrogen and did not occur in those who took birth control pills containing progesterone. Treatments: The medications of choice to stop a menstrual migraine are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs).
1415174 tn?1453243103 Hi, I understand your concern regarding this and like any other medications, side effects may or may not occur depending on the patient as well as if there are drug interactions with patient's present medicine. Topiramate extended-release capsules may cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, trouble concentrating, or vision changes. But may be worse if it is taken with alcohol or certain medicines. It is best that you check with your doctor for proper management. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn Hi, Hallucinations and night mares are common side effects of Propranolol. However, these are not serious side effects. You do not need to stop the medication for these symptoms. Please talk to your doctor for the management of the symptoms. Another fact about Propranolol is that it should not be stopped suddenly otherwise it may cause Angina, and possibility a heart attack. Please discuss with your doctor if you really want to change the medication. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
Avatar f tn I just posted the other day that my doctor prescribed me methadone 5mg twice a day. I also have Norco 5-325 for breakthrough pain. I am allowed to take two Norcos. My question is, do you guys think this is a massive jump from taking hydrocodone-containing products on a daily basis? I just tried the medication and I have a fever of 101.4, feeling completely lethargic and falling asleep performing tasks.
667913 tn?1242700488 I am seeing a new neurologist tomorrow (Thursday) and I know they will want to put me on a preventative medication. Can you tell me what has worked for you with minimal side effects. I have an Eating disorder too, so anything that causes weight gain will just make my problems worse. Please advise! Many Thanks.
Avatar f tn This might be a migraine headache. Is it localized to one side of your head, or is the throbbing all over? You should probably see a Neurologist so they can evaluate the proper course of treatment. Typically, migraines don't respond to conventional headache medication, which is why you aren't feeling better after taking Advil or Tylenol. A Neurologist can prescribe migraine medication like Topamax or Propranolol, which will hopefully help you finally get rid of that headache!
Avatar f tn I also was on propranolol for a while with no side effects. I don't agree with banglamom in saying the best cure is to stop taking your medicine. Some medicines can have side effects at first that wear off after you've been on them for a month or so.
Avatar f tn I never experienced nausea with Topamax but i did experience many other side effects. It definitely cleared the migraines the best. However, over time and with the increase dose of 200 mg eventually I became aphasic, unable to recall recent events, numbness in my extremities and eventually lost my job due to the neurological symtoms. Now i am on Inderal or propranolol which is a beta blocker and only 80 mg and it helps the headaches without the side effects. Talk to your doctor and suggest it.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have suffered with migraines for many years & was placed on prophylactic meds-Cymbalta & Propranolol. About 3 months ago I developed Trigeminal Neuritis on my R side. I have to say it was the most painful affliction I ever experienced, even worse than the 2 spinal fusions I underwent! I was placed on Trileptal & am up to 600mg 2x/day, as well as continuing with Cymbalta & Propranolol.
Avatar n tn Propranolol has least side effects used by surgeons so that their hands dont shake during an operaion. I had anal fissure with brain zaps. There are 3 sicknesses related to brain zaps. 1) SSRI discontinuation Syndrome. - Treatment Prozac. 2) Essenial Tremors - Treatment Propranolol. 3) Concussion.
Avatar f tn I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for. I am on it for migranes so im hoping i can stick it out because my headaches are unbearable. Good luck!
