Pristiq weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Pristiq weight gain

pristiq

Avatar n tn Gained lots of weight on Effexor. On Pristiq kept gaining weight plus my period never came back (2 months). Stopped Pristiq cold turkey because my doc told me it was either this (tablet should not be cut...risk of serotonyne syndrome) or going back to Effexor and counting beads. It´s been 2 weeks and I feel strong spasms in my brain. Like something is pressuring it, especially in the back of my head. Frequency varies along day. For 6 hours or so the spasms occur 2 times every minute.
407790 tn?1397764626 I've been on just about every antidepressant on the market for the past 20 years and miraculously none of them made me gain weight...until Pristiq. I gained 10 pounds on it—not a ton of weight but I'm short so it really shows. I'm now in the process of going off it. My question is this: Have people been able to lose weight after discontinuing an antidepressant that made them gain? I'm worried this drug has permanently messed with my metabolism.
Avatar m tn ) Sounds like you've got an overactive imagination! As far as weight gain yes I did gain on it, not alot, but I did. And more importantly I couldn't lose weight after my kids because of the med. I ended up going on Pristiq because I started to get RLS on Lexapro. GL!! (oh and weaning is very hard to do on Lex. You have to wean slowly!!
1450085 tn?1298945302 IF YOU GAIN WEIGHT ON ANY OF THESE THAN YOUR DOSE IS TO HIGH! I ACTUALLY LOSE WEIGHT ON BOTH! i have never got the weight gain thing?
Avatar f tn And my guess is, if these drugs are working, your problem very well may be depression, especially if wellbutrin worked -- it's one of the most stimulating of the antidepressants which is why it doesn't cause the weight gain that most antidepressants cause. Pristiq, an snri, targets serotonin as the ssris do but also targets norepinephrine, which is basically adrenalin, which is why these aren't usually first choices for anxiety. If it's working, that's great.
Avatar f tn My psychiatrist switched me to Effexor because he says they are the same and I am tapering off. I did NOT gain weight on Pristiq and I think the sexual side effects weren't as bad. I can tell the difference on Effexor. I wouldn't be worried to start it if you need something, but I'm not sure yet about getting off. It's basically like Effexor, so I assume going off it will be like Effexor and that's supposed to be tough.
Avatar f tn I took Lexapro for GAD and it is just wonderful, except for the weight gain, which in my case is really big...so my dr just switched me to pristiq. I have been taking it for 4 days now. I feel a bit dizzy today and a bit anxious though....how I wish it would work for my GAD so that I would not have to take Lexapro and gain so much weight..anybody with similar experiences?
Avatar m tn I also didn't gain weight on it. Same might be true for Effexor for me (who knows?). I gained weight on Celexa and felt significantly more blunted emotionally by it. I think, if Pristiq is only 150mg of Effexor at it's theraputic dose than it may work for some, but if your depression is very severe, it might not be a high enough dose? Just a thought. I want to get pregnant soon and plan to be off both these drugs, hence the taper.
Avatar m tn type of feelings. Anyway, it made me gain 16 lbs in just 3 months! Most people don't gain weight on this drug, I did but it's because I didn't realize the nausea was normal. And of course I knew I was gaining the weight but I didn't care... which I normally do. I'm a gym/diet addict so to see this happen and not care shows something wasn't right. 4. I wasn't excited about things anymore. Nothing made me happy. For example, I love hockey.
Avatar f tn I have been on Pristiq for about 2 years now, went from 50mg to 100 mg recently which now I'm wondering if that made any significant difference. I think I was better off on 50mg because I feel the same as I do on 100mg so why take more if not needed? Anyway, I've had depression, anxiety, and OCD since childhood and got much worse after each child was born (3 kids). I've tried approximately 8 different meds including Paxil, Effexor, Lexapro which omg I'm lucky I'm still alive after that one!
Avatar n tn I just read your comments about weight gain while taking Wellbutrin. I've been on it for a few years now for anxiety/panic problems. I take 200 mg once a day, which I'm told is a relatively low dose. My psych told me that people lose weight while on Wellbutrin. NOT ME! I've gained 50 pounds and I don't seem to be able to take it off even with diet and exercise. I started thinking it was just me. I'm sorry you've had the same experience but I'm glad to know I'm not alone.
1314992 tn?1273979518 Last I took Zoloft was 3-ish years ago and experienced no weight gain (if anything, weight was lost). What is the likelihood I'd start gaining weight this go-around? (I know - probably a stupid question since all medications affect everybody differently.) Also - my GP didn't go into detail about the weaning off process or if I should wean from Pristiq. I stopped taking it 3 days ago and am starting to feel the withdrawal symptoms. Is it safe to start 25mg of Zoloft now without weaning?
Avatar n tn It's not that you gain weight as a direct result of the drug, but you have more urges to eat. Massive weight gain isn't seen in these drugs like the anti-psychotics used for severe cases of schizophrenia. Do you have a psychiatrist? It's really important that you have a specialist involved in your health care. All of these meds take a while to get out of your system, you have to remember they are altering your brain chemistry, it rebalances the chemicals that were causing your depression.
1257808 tn?1322765815 Zyprexa is known for causing significant weight gain. Many meds make us really hungry all of the time. If your concerned about weight it is really important for you to look up the side effects of a med before you choose to take it or not. There are meds that are weight neutral. It's a shame so many dr's don't take that into consideration when prescribing these drugs. They don't have to carry the weight, we do! I will not take a drug that is weight gaining no matter what.
Avatar m tn I am 25 year old male, 5'10, 145 lbs, I have delayed Gastric Emptying (as seen on a Gastric Emptying Study) and struggle to NOT lose weight, I actually want to gain weight. Differing doctors have mentioned 2 pills to me and I'm wondering which one sounds best based on my symptoms: Lexapro or Pristiq?
Avatar f tn Anyway, the question?? A big question I have is feeling worse? Weight gain?(since I can't workout, might seem vain...but it will only depress me more) How long it takes to kick in? Mixing w/ Klonopin? I understand these our real ? for my doctor and everyone is different...just wanted some feedback.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if Pristiq (antidepressant) causes weight gain? I am on this medication and have gained weight since starting it.
Avatar n tn I have been on Welbutrin for almost 4 months now and have noticed weight gain of about 8-10 pounds and I'm not eating anymore than I use to. I'm wondering if the 'weight-gain'/'weight-loss' issue is affected by whether or not people 'need' to lose weight before they start taking it. I consider myself to have a fairly high metabolism and I can maintain my weight quite easily. I know what causes me to gain weight and what I need to do to lose it.
Avatar n tn Most frustrating, I've noticed that since I stopped taking both, my weight gain has accelerated. Any ideas as to how long I need to endure this or ideas for correcting my metabolism? Thanks.
Avatar f tn Tell him or her that you feel Pristiq is not working for you. That you feel that Pristiq has made you gain weight and that you now have carb cravings that you never had before and that you want to stop taking Pristiq. A friend of mine was prescribed a drug by her family doctor which created similiar side effects as you have described. She went back to her family doctor and told her she didn't want to be on this drug anymore and that she wanted to stop taking it.
603543 tn?1255298050 I found taking Pristiq with a big glass of water in the morning before eating worked the best. Although almost 3 months in im going to the doctors to find out options of what i can change to. My biggest self esteem issue is my weight & in the 3 months ive been on Pristiq i have watched what i ate & even started working out 5-6 days a week & ive climbed another 6kgs. I dont need it! Otherwise Pristiq worked beautifully (as long as you dont forget to take it).
Avatar n tn There have been very low incidences of side effects, little to no weight gain and sexual side effecfts don't seem to be an issue either. I'm suprised that you are having issues, because of the almost identical makeup of the drug. The brain is a mysterious thing though, some react, some don't. The thing though is it may take a few days for the drug to be attached to the receptors, there is no scale to measure on when that will happen.
Avatar m tn I don't know if you will ever get this email, but it is worth a shot in the dark. First I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you wrote. I found so much more "normal" after reading it. Sorry let me explain... I am a mother of 3 and I have a busy life. I was put on Pristiq to "help" with my anxiety, depression, and weight gain. Apparently I was a perfect candidate for this medication.
Avatar n tn I heard it is horrible with weight gain. Is Paxil CR as bad with weight gain as regular Paxil? Also which SSRI's will make me gain the least amount of weight. I know each person is different, but I just mean genarally.
Avatar f tn Supposedly the 2 newer ones Geodon and Abilify cause the least amount of weight gain if any. I read about them in a study and the best was Geodon with no incidence of weight gain, and Abilify had very little chance of weight gain. The older drugs tend to cause more weight gain. However; having said that I attended a Bipolar support group meeting and we voted on this issue and only one out of 22 people would rather be sick than be healthy and gain a few pounds.
Avatar n tn I refused to go on any depression medication because weight gain is a side effect for most of them. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but it's a big deal to me. I don't feel good about myself. I don't feel sexy or attractive either. Let me know if you figure anything out that works because I want this extra weight off ASAP! Thanks and good luck!
955052 tn?1249584552 I have been carring ED for 15years and am so scared of putting on weight... of course I expected to put on weight back when I'd stopped purging but my weight is going up each day and I cannot stop eating... I am so depressed and confused... What should I do??????
