Pristiq weight loss or gain

Common Questions and Answers about Pristiq weight loss or gain

Avatar n tn I have been on Welbutrin for almost 4 months now and have noticed weight gain of about 8-10 pounds and I'm not eating anymore than I use to. I'm wondering if the 'weight-gain'/'weight-loss' issue is affected by whether or not people 'need' to lose weight before they start taking it. I consider myself to have a fairly high metabolism and I can maintain my weight quite easily. I know what causes me to gain weight and what I need to do to lose it.
Avatar n tn Do they make me hungry therefore you eat more and gain. Or do you just gain weight without changing any eating habits? Same thing with losing. I am way too scared to gain weight right now. The pharmacist said there is no weight-gain side-effect but everywhere I look on the internet says otherwise.
Avatar m tn I have been taking pristiq 50 mg since june 08 right after it came out It does great for the depression unless I take any other med such as vitamins which I also need . It has raised my blood pressure and my cholesterol, I have horrible sweating with it now they want me to take coreg, and pravachol. When I was on effexor I had rls so bad I had to take sinemet to relieve the discomfort. Has anyone else noticed that if they take other meds when taking pristiq it doesnt work.
Avatar m tn I took 50mg of Pristiq and it definitely helped me. It is also weight neutral and for me at least, the sexual side effects were less than other ADs. They were still there though. I am currently trying to come off Pristiq and I've been switched to an equivalent dose of Effexor. They are very similar chemically and not easy to come off of for most. I have found the Effexor much harder to come off of than Celexa, although that was hard too.
Avatar n tn However, I got weight gain, not loss, plus a sensitive stomach. Which is why the weight gain is weird, given I am having difficulty keeping food down sometimes. No not pregnant! Just my luck, I'd get the weight gain! I'm giving this a few more weeks, then I'm going back to au naturel and probably hot sweats until I can find a holistic alternative. The side effects are depressing enough!
Avatar n tn I thought these 2 meds were known to be weight neutral or cause weight loss. My doctor knows my concern about the weight issue as this is something I have never fought to maintain while everything else in life seems to be a fight. If I stopped taking all meds, would I lose the weight and go back to my normal size. I do lack motivation that's for sure! I think or say I will start a program and don't.
Avatar n tn I was looking back on my weight loss chart and saw that within 3 weeks of starting lexapro each time, I had a significant weight gain. I went from 175 to 185 the first time and then continued to gain despite following the program and exercising. When I went off the med, the weight began to drop and I made it down below 200. I started it again in February this year and within 3 weeks, here came another 10 pounds and it's been steadilly going up ever since.
Avatar n tn I've done some research and it seems some of the newer drugs (Effexor and Cymbalta) don't cause weight gain for as many people. In fact some cause weight loss. Has anyone had a good experience with Effexor/Effexor XR or Cymbalta?
603543 tn?1255298050 Memory loss. weight gain. mood swings comparable to bi polar . been on prestiq 3 years but have had the least side effects with this drug. I've been on just about everything it seems. effexor worked ok but I had tremors after the 2nd year. it seems like the longer I'm on a med the less it outlays the side effects. I sometimes think I'd be better without.
Avatar m tn I am taking Pristiq and not sure if it helps or not. I was taking Eflexor 225 mg daily and this pristiq is only 50 mg. The withdrawal from Eflexor was terrible. Had nightmares and felt like I was fading away while trying to fall asleep. What does low magnesium have to do with depression? Never heard of that before. Can you get this over the counter?
Avatar f tn Supposedly the 2 newer ones Geodon and Abilify cause the least amount of weight gain if any. I read about them in a study and the best was Geodon with no incidence of weight gain, and Abilify had very little chance of weight gain. The older drugs tend to cause more weight gain. However; having said that I attended a Bipolar support group meeting and we voted on this issue and only one out of 22 people would rather be sick than be healthy and gain a few pounds.
Avatar n tn I was on this drug for 5 years and it worked well with me but I didn't like the weight gain or size J cup bra I needed. I took myself off the drug but I did it very slowly over a 6-9 month process I finally got to once a month with the pill and was able to tolerate not taking anymore. Once I stopped the drug in a matter of 2 weeks I lost 4 cup sizes. Now I'm beginning to loss weight.
Avatar f tn That is quite young. May I ask what kind? Or not-that's cool too. Did you know that Pristiq is very close to being the same drug as Effexor? ***You might want to read some of it on-line at and the article "A comparison of effexor & pristiq." The chemical name for Effexor is 'venlafaxin.' The chemical name for Pristiq is 'desvenlafaxine.'*** This is MY take on it-ask the experts though. I'm not detailing this for you specifically.

Avatar f tn I was on Celexa, for 3 months last year but it didn't do much for me, in fact it was like i wasn't on it at all, the only bad side effect was loss of sex drive and libido etc. no weight gain or loss that i noticed. I have bipolar 1, and was on other medication at the time. as you probably know everyone is different when it comes to these types of medication so please don't be discouraged by my comment. My dad was on it for 10 years and said it was the best thing he had ever tried for depression.
Avatar m tn I stopped skating during this period as I was just too tired! I began to gain weight from lack of exercise. I remember on bad days driving the 50 mile home from work and just hoping I'd make it home and not driving off the road. On those days, I fall on the sofa and sleep, sometimes for 2 or 3 hours right through dinner.
2089111 tn?1332701373 My suspicion is that one of the main factors is that through the SNRI activity, the JNK gene expression gets increased substantially, and eventually resulting in excessive weight gain. So, Pristiq acts as an activator. There are some ways to contain the JNK gene expression. For this, I can give you details for a simple approach, if interested. Also this gene is a marker for health and longevity according to its level of expression.
Avatar n tn That is a side-effect a lot of people have a hard time with when taking anti-depressents; weight gain. Generally the weight gain is limited to 2-3 lbs, if that will ease your husbands mind, but sometimes just knowing about the side affect makes the paranoia about it worse. Zoloft I've heard is actually supposed to be one of the better anti-depressants to be on for weight gain, but it does depend on the person.
Avatar f tn Candida causes nail fungus, food cravings (carbs and sugar especially, because that is what they eat), abnormal weight gain or loss, gas/bloating, emotional problems (many of which mimic schizophrenia), joint pain, etc. The list goes on. Do you usually feel worse after eating something high sugar like ice cream? Here's a link that walks you through a home test to determine whether or not you have a problem: ...I hope that helps!
Avatar n tn It's to the point where I can't even engage in intercourse with my partner, go shopping or even go out in the sun. I keep hearing and reading how Urticaria, usually has signs on the skin surface but I don't, except for the really bad itchy feeling. Sometimes I question whether or not I have something else because it's really bad and it feels like I have a sudden burning rush of nails/needles stabbing my skin and I can't even move but only twitch.
Avatar f tn I just have to watch what i est cuz it makes you gain weight. I also take .50 mg of xanax 3 times a day. I am wondering when i am gonna start feeling alot better. Any advice will be helpful!!! I just want to be me again. Also any advice to help with the depression until the meds kick in. Thanks.
1488265 tn?1288164757 I obsess about small things. If I'm not the perfect weight, or if I'm not the right kind of social/antisocial I will become unhappy with my life. My sleeping pattern is erratic. I'll sleep too little(four hours) or too much(twelve hours) without any seeming pattern. From December through May I couldn't remember how to enjoy things. I had to teach myself the feeling of enjoyment, which I now don't understand. I don't enjoy anything in my life that I once enjoyed. I feel I'm worthless.
Avatar m tn Fatigue, body ache, itchiness, occasional kidney pain, hives on my arm (raised red fleshy bumps), itchy anus, flushing, constipation, occasional dizziness/fogginess, weight gain and inability to lose weight. I've noticed when I have caffeine my symptoms sometimes get worse but sometimes get better. Today I had total body pain, maybe my body going through withdrawals from the caffeine I thought.
Avatar f tn I have been on 100mg of Topamax since the end of April. I immediately experienced the loss of appetite. I seaked the advice of a naturopath to use it to my advantage because I had about 80 pounds to lose. I see him every Friday and since then, I have lost 43 pounds...:-) It has not been difficult. It seems like he weight is coming off on its own now. I don't crave anything. I'm hoping to reach my goal by January.
Avatar m tn I eat very healthy and well balanced, and exercise daily, though find having to eat ice cream and more carbs to gain weight as I am constantly cold, prior to Xanax when I was anxious I would break a sweat and completly go mind blank. I have pretty bad night sweats now though, and I sweat heavily under my armpits and drink about 4 gallons of water or gatorade a day as I am constantly thirsty. Though I think this has to do with the Pritiq. I read through this woman's manual: http://www.benzo.
Avatar f tn My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?
881463 tn?1245349249 for example paroxetine causes sedation and weight gain, and prozac causes activation and a bit of weight loss. Citalopram is weight and sleep neutral in most people. All SSRIs and SNRIs have sexual side effects, EXCEPT perhaps Pristiq, a new SNRI that has very low incidence of sexual side effects in the one or two trials that have been done with the medication.
329994 tn?1301666848 The topamax is still working great for me and I am unsure if the weight loss is attributed to the levels of cortisol dropping in my body or the topamax but either way i will take it and I have only had less than a dozen moderate headaches,,,,headaches!!! not even a migraine since I started the stuff. I'd take 3 migraines a week frankly and be happy with that!! I'm hoping after my B12 goes up, maybe I won't need the topamax anymore or maybe even my anti depressant too.
Avatar n tn The main reason is that it is so very expensive and I do not want to be dependant on medicine. Plus, the weight gain and the loss of sex drive. I feel like I am in hell. Wow, Im so scared of the things that are happening to me. Should I go back on the medicine?
