Dopamine is a major neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. There
are several dopamine projections
and if disturbed can cause neuropsychiatric
and/or movement disorders. One pathway is the nigrostriatal pathway which is affected in parkinsonism disorders. Another is the mesolimbic pathway which has a key role in the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, hallucinogen use, and temporal lobe epilepsy. Mesocortical pathway is involved in information processing, attention, and wakefulness.
