Common Questions and Answers about Potassium chloride hypokalemia

Avatar f tn In physiology, the primary ions of electrolytes are sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), hydrogen phosphate (HPO42−), and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3−). The electric charge symbols of plus (+) and minus (−) indicate that the substance in question is ionic in nature and has an imbalanced distribution of electrons, the result of chemical dissociation".
Avatar n tn Hi there. You are suffering from the effects of hypokalemia or potassium deficiency. Mild hypokalemia can cause cardiac arrhythmias, muscle weakness, myalgia, muscle cramps, and constipation. Certain ecg findings are flattened or inverted Twave, a U wave, ST depression, and a wide PR interval. Mild hypokalemia could be treated with oral potassium chloride supplements and nutritional supplements like bananas, oranges, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables etc.
Avatar f tn Does anyone else have recurring issues with low potassium (hypokalemia)? Prior to TX I don't think it had been really ever checked but since starting it's shown up low (2.1-2.8) a few times.
Avatar f tn Presence of adrenal tumors and hypertension cause the renal potassium stores to be depleted and make the person susceptible to hypokalemia. Use of chemotherapy also causes hypokalemia" Too much insulin secretion can cause hypokalemia because insulin promotes potassium to enter skeletal muscle cells. Be aware that adrenal tumors, congestive heart failure and hypertension predispose a person to hypokalemia because renal potassium stores can be depleted by these conditions.
Avatar n tn Posh~if you are hypokalemic, your dietary Potassium may not be a sufficient means of normalizing your blood Potassium. OTC Potassium may not be stong enough either. A provider will need to order a blood Potassium level, and if low, a prescription for Potassium will be prescribed. I would suggest you make a doctor's appointment and make sure you avoid diuretics and/or laxatives.
Avatar f tn Tummy Where My VP Shunt Is Located Has Been Causing Me A Sharp Excruciating Pain. I Went To The ER And Was Informed My Hypokalemia Level Is Extremely Low. I Was Given A Potassium Drink In The Hospital And Told To Rest And Eat Plenty Of Bananas. Today Is Day 5 And The Pain Has Only Gotten Worse And Other Symptoms Have Been Added. Woke Up With A Bad Burning Sensation In My Neck.
Avatar f tn Are you saying that the postassium levels are low? My cat has low blood potassium levels, and is doing great on potassium supplements. Why not get your cat put on the supplements. Potassium is VERY dangerous when it's too low, this effects the muscles in the body and affects the heart rate(very slow). You need to call your vet about this. Potassium is an electrolyte that is important to living beings.
Avatar f tn They need to not have the tourniquet rubber too long before drawing blood for potassium, because that can cause a false increase in your potassium measurement. Before you take any more florinef, I think you might try to get a hold of your primary care doctor about cutting back, since your cardio is not in, and if your primary care physician is not in either, you might try calling and speaking to a pharmacist about your situation.
Avatar n tn Should I take Potassium gluconate or Potassium Choloride for diuretic induced hypokalemia. How much should I take. I have had leg cramps for the past 3 nights.
1448921 tn?1287789632 (In fact, I sometimes need large volumes of IV fluids—6 liters last time I had to get IV saline on top of the oral fluid and salt loading I was already doing that day—and they have no reservations whatsoever about doing that for me despite the fact that I already have preexisting hypokalemia which is regulated with Rx potassium supplementation. If the IV saline were expected to throw off my potassium levels, they would be upping my supplementation temporarily accordingly.
14533107 tn?1435025250 They hooked me up to an IV (with oral potassium chloride), which eventually brought my potassium levels back to normal, and I was released. Afterwards, I had a series of anxiety attacks. About an average of three a day for about two weeks. From then on, I began to worry about things like heart attack, stroke, and even heart arrhythmia. I know that it is extremely uncommon for a 13 year-old to have ANY cardiac issues, it's possible, although very rare.
Avatar n tn what is the difference between Potassium Chloride, Potassium Nitrate and Potassium Citrate?
Avatar m tn ve had blood work done the only thing that has come back is low potassium , could i have a heart defect that the ECG isnt picking up. ???
Avatar f tn ( I have been in ER twice with hypokalemia (level 2.8). Is this normal with Hypokalemia? Only other health condition epilepsy). Should I be concerned about Ventricular Fibrilation?
617141 tn?1225706428 Transfer was postponed till I get better. Doctor gave me Lasix 40 mg to be taken once and Neo-K (potassium chloride) 500 mg twice daily for 5 days for now. My concern is that I ate two potatoes, one banana, a cup of yogurt, and tomato, all potassium sources today.
Avatar m tn This is a condition that occurs when a person’s body excretes too much potassium. Hypokalemia can cause a person to not have enough potassium in their blood. Low levels of potassium can cause a number of symptoms, including muscle weakness that can result in paralysis. Left bundle branch block: This is a condition where the electrical impulses to the heart’s left ventricle become slower. This can make it more difficult for the heart to pump blood efficiently.
Avatar n tn If you correct your hypokalemia, your QT time will probably normalize too. Hypokalemia will prolong QT, regardless of the "TU wave fusion" which can happen in extreme cases. I would assume that K+ = 3,1 would prolong QTc by 20-50 msec. Correcting your hypokalemia would possibly cure your "prehypertension" too..
1618806 tn?1304734477 Dash and Morton Salt Substitute (for example) which is loaded with Potassium Chloride. If you take the time to read the ingredients on ANY Ms. Dash flavors, you'll find nothing but herbs and spices, there's absolutely NO potassium chloride in it. Point of reference: http://www.mortonsalt.com/products/foodsalts/salt_sub.
Avatar n tn Potassium and Calcium and important electrolytes in muscles. Potassium is one of those electrolytes you dont really want to be messed up in your body. High potassium levels can cause heart dysrrhythmias, since your heart is a big muscle, Other signs of hyperkalemia(increased potassium) are nausea vomitting, restlessness, irritability, I am looking in my book right now to make sure i can give you the most accurate information. Chloride there is not much on.
Avatar f tn Electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia, (lowered potassium), are actually quite common in patients with Dysautonomia. Even those that aren't taking medication known to alter potassium levels such as Florinef. Many specialists check their patients potassium levels both prior to Florinef, as well as one to three months after. If his potassium level is low, his doctor maybe able to prescribe a daily potassium supplement to take with Florinef.
