Common Questions and Answers about Plavix and liver damage

plavix

448351 tn?1207789907 Ditto SusieQ: Your docs DO need to be communicating with each other. My husband was in a similar situation last year, and it took a little coordinating, but it's do-able (stent placement and liver biopsy, that is). My husband had a non-medicinal stent put in last year on Feb 1st and started on oral Plavix.
448351 tn?1207789907 I think your questions were answered on a previous post. "Get a Biopsy" and see how much damage you really have. The ultrasound showing damage depends on what person is doing it. I had a Biopsy and the tech doing it the first time asked me why I was getting it and when I told him hep c he really did a thorough job. And it showd some damage. The next time the tech. didn't ask me why and he only took half the time to do it and it didn't show as much damage.
Avatar f tn i was taking vytorin and plavix when i was told i have cll .
Avatar f tn Hello there, I am a 49-year-old woman of average weight but with growing belly fat. I exercise fairly regularly but haven't watched my cholesterol levels. Over the years, I've been a vegetarian but have eaten a lot of dairy, fat and oil in my diet. I have a brother who had a severe blockage and double-bypass at age 50. I am also half Mexican which puts me in a higher risk category, from what I have read.
Avatar m tn The very definition of a heart attack also referred to as a myocardial infarction is heart muscle damage and cell necrosis. If you HAVE NO heart damage, it is difficult to believe you have had a heart attack. There may be some confusion or misunderstanding!. However, looking at your measurements your HDL is slightly high, and as you point out ALT 58 exceeds the normal high range of 48 U/L.
448351 tn?1207789907 I went to my G.I. yesterday. No, I don't have a Hepatologist. Since I need a stent put in because of my heart the doc wants me to have that fixed first before considering treatment for the Hep C. I do have a VL of 670,000 (geno 1a) at last check but no real signs of Liver damage. I haven't had a biopsy because of the Plavix & other meds I'm on. Here's my question - The G.I. doctor told me that a Fibroscan or Fibrosure test wouldn't be reliable anyway.
Avatar n tn You need the heart medication and Plavix and it would be risking to stop the Plavix. Lipitor is good for studies have shown that it has helped reduce cholesterol buildup in the arteries. The studies showed that 40mg was just as good as 80mg and that 80mg did not help reduce the cholesterol buildup any more than the 40mg. One question I have, is the nitro patch. Are you having chest pains? Nitro is not good for your liver.
Avatar n tn I've followed this research, and from what I've learned the drug interaction of Plavix and PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) is not not that strong. I doubted the report from the start as I took Plavix and PPI's and my blood was as thin as tea, I bruised very, very easily, and the blood tests to determine my clotting factor wasn't changed by taking the two drugs.
237039 tn?1264258057 It was sudden and the damage is permanent. No warning at all. I was told that there was plaque in the blood vessel and was told that the cell damage happens in the first few hours. Actually, the opthamologist says that some of my vision may get better and that my left eye would have to compensate for the vision loss. This has been so surreal and I am having a hard time accepting this. He told me it is rare. He only sees this maybe 3 or 4 times a year.
237039 tn?1264258057 But I still have the coronary artery disease and my cardiac blockages are from Plaque buildup. I am still trying to figure how why one trumps the other.
Avatar m tn Please note that the article mention plavix as used as "prevention of stroke" here we are speaking of Plavix to avoid restenosis and clots in the case that you have medical stents implanted. The situation is quite different.
Avatar m tn Due to complications, I have had to have blocked portions of my colon removed twice, along with hernia repair at seperate times. I was told I should have a blood test routinely to detect any liver damage. I did not do this, and seemed fine. After I had the stint put in three years ago, I was sent home with numerous scrips, one being plavix, and told to continue taking aspirin daily as I had.
Avatar m tn I have elected to have some minor cosmetic surgery (liposuction) around the waist to help assist me in m weight loss. I know I have to come off Plavix 10 days prior and about 5 days after. Really wondering what damage could be done in 15 days of coming off Plavix if any? All my stents were drug eluding stents.
315318 tn?1353251800 All muscle cells rely on this to create energy and a lack of it causes damage and discomfort in the muscles. This includes heart muscle. I have been researching this and intend to mention it to my cardiologist on the 12th to get his opinion. When you stop taking statins, then perhaps the fibrates are having the same affect. Most people when changed to a different type of statin overcome this problem. Its very common for the diagnosis to be a circulation problem.
Avatar n tn Sounds to me like you may have passed a gallstone. plavix can cause a hemolytic-uremic syndrome and TTP will low platelets, etc. The plavix may have given you a systemic reaction. i think watchful waiting for now is OK with careful monitoring of your liver tests.
Avatar n tn My husband had his first heart attack in November 2006 and took plavix for one year. At that time the doctor took him off plavix and then just four short months later he suffered another heart attack with much heart damage. We questioned this as he had placed two stents at the time of his first heart attack, but he said the new thinking was to stop the plavix after one year. He did no further testing or anything.
976897 tn?1379167602 It has been known for years heartburn drugs could interfere with a liver enzyme needed to process Plavix, neutralizing its effects. Who knows with that interaction what that effect on the body's chemistry! Plavix's interaction with many other drugs cautionary. Probably better to fogo Plavix than stopping acid reflux med before and after PCI.
329994 tn?1301663248 You must get a bleeding time, clotting time done and must reduce the dose or go off Plavix and take an alternative, after consulting a cardiologist. If Plavix is not the only cause then bruises could be due to internal bleeding from torn capillaries. The other possible reasons are low platelet count, clotting disorders, fragile spider veins, deep vein thrombus, deficiency of Vitamin B12, folic acid, or Vit K, a liver disease or certain cancers (less likely in your case).
Avatar f tn The clinically important adverse reactions observed in trials comparing Plavix plus aspirin to placebo plus aspirin and trials comparing Plavix alone to aspirin alone are discussed below. Bleeding CURE In CURE, Plavix use with aspirin was associated with an increase in major bleeding (primarily gastrointestinal and at puncture sites) compared to placebo with aspirin. The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (0.1%) and fatal bleeding (0.2%) were the same in both groups.
Avatar f tn Even things like antidepressants can (in some people) cause liver related side effects - i/e increased enzyme readings due to cell damage. Both the liver and spleen are in concert with many problems and they can both swell. Next would be to have a series of ANA (Anti-nuclear antibodies) run, and have ferritin/TIBC checked as well as ceruloplasmin - Those detect/rule out things like PBC PSC Wilson's and Hemachromatosis - All of which are able to cause a type of (non viral) Hepatitis.
Avatar m tn I also have eight stents, they are in all three major heart arteries, seven of them were inserted within eighteen months about six years ago. Half of my stents are drug-elluting, half are bare-metal. I was also told initially I would be on Plavix the rest of my life. However, I really worked hard to change my risk factors... of course I didn't smoke, I quit eating red meat, lost a great deal of weight, took the good drugs recommended by my doctor, and exercised daily.
Avatar f tn Liver enzymes fluctuate all the time. They were probably looking for them to raise really high and at the times he went in his were lower, so they figured he was OK. I had hep c for 25 years and my enzymes were normal until last year. The whole medical profession needs to become more educated about this disease. Did your husband ever have a biopsy in the past? If not, there is no way that they could tell what stage he was at when they first discovered the disease.
255163 tn?1376869746 My heart Dr will not let me go off the plavix and my surgeon will not do the surgery while on plavix. What happens in a situation like this?. I am between a rock and a hard place. If neither Dr gives in what do I do? If I have an attack and end up in the ER wouldn't they have to do emergency sugery?. Does this mean that anyone on plavix can never have surgery unless it's an ermergency. What is your opinion on going off plavix temporarily for surgery. I would welcome anyones advice.
Avatar n tn was recently diagnosed w/ small liver hemangioma and am wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to be on aspirin and effient (like plavix) due to coronary stent or does this pose a risk of hemangioma bleeding?
Avatar n tn I have read so often that you should not take Plavix and aspirin, but it seems to also be common to prescribe both plavix and aspirin in certain situations. I am worried and confused. Thanks.
Avatar f tn i had a massive heart attack in june 2009 which i'm on medication for. my concern is i'm due to come off plavix in 1 month's time and heard a lot of bad thing's about coming off it.
Avatar n tn I had angioplasty in 2001 and had a stent implant. My cardiologist prescribed Plavix and 81 mg aspirin daily among the other medications (beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, statin). I have recently moved to a new city and have not found a new cardiologist yet but family physician suggested that Plavix could be discontinued as the guidelines have changed and no long recommended after 12 months post stent implant. Suggestions please?
