Avatar n tn Earlier studies had suggested that both vitamin E and the diabetes drug pioglitazone could benefit people with fatty liver disease. Doctors sometimes even prescribe pioglitazone off-label for the condition, Sanyal says. To test the effectiveness of pioglitazone and vitamin E, Sanyal and colleagues at 11 other medical facilities identified 247 people who had severe fatty liver disease. None of the volunteers drank alcohol excessively or was diabetic, but all were overweight or obese.
Avatar f tn Study Confirms Benefits of Vitamin E in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Megan Brooks May 4, 2010 — Supplementation with the natural form of vitamin E (800 IU/day) has beneficial effects in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), but pioglitazone's benefits are less clear, according to the latest findings from the Pioglitazone vs Vitamin E vs Placebo for the Treatment of Nondiabetic Patients with Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (PIVENS) trial, reported online April 28 in the New England
Avatar m tn Thank You very much for your reply, As I mentioned above, she was given new medicined once she experienced high blood sugar level few weeks back. She was given Metformin (850 mg) and Pioglitazone (30Mg per day). Once she started experiencing low blood sugar level, the doctor stopped giving Pioglitazone and asked to continue Metformin with few other medicines and the my mother was told that she experiencing such low levels of sugar due to Pioglitazone.
Avatar m tn among the two drugs Pioglitazone (Actos) has less sides and also active against HCC but i didn t find a study on its activity against hbsag and hbvdna http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn Clinical trials are also looking at the effectiveness of certain antioxidants and newer diabetes medications in treating fatty liver disease. This is because of the disease's link to oxidative stress and diabetes.
Avatar f tn For women who are unresponsive to clomiphene, the oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin could be of little help, or pioglitazone, may bring resumption of regular cycles and ovulation. These agents reduce the hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia in PCOS. These are actually medically prescribed medicines for PCOS.As this syndrome is very common in women the case is often individualised and treatment option will be processed and prescribed.Fell free to talk to your Doc.
Avatar m tn UCSF hear is San Francisco is a center of excellence in the treatment of liver disease here in Northern California and where I have been treated for hepatitis C, cirrhosis, liver cancer and had my liver transplant on November 16th of last year. The disease is mostly silent and is often discovered through incidentally elevated liver enzyme levels. It is strongly associated with obesity and insulin resistance and is currently considered by many as the hepatic component of the metabolic syndrome.
806995 tn?1265823176 agreed that the '08 metformin study did not make a strong case for adding metformin in all patients, however you might also want to look at a recent Khattab'10 study that looked at adding pioglitazone in geno 4s with HOMA1 gt 2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19919569 They measured across-the-board improvement in SVR rates 60% vs 39% significant at 0.04. Geno 4s seem to be particularly susceptible to IR-related effects so this may not generalize.
Avatar m tn Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a hepatic disorder associated with the metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. It is a very common problem for which no therapy, short of diet/weight loss and exercise, has shown benefit. Extreme measures of weight loss include bariatric surgery, which has not been well studied, but may be beneficial.[1] Accordingly, there is considerable interest in developing pharmacologic therapies directed toward addressing the presence of insulin resistance.
Avatar f tn The structure of the heart and that includes wall dimensions, chamber size, valves, valve compliance, and heart functionality is evaluated and measured by ultra sound referred to as echocardiogram. A doppler test can be part of the echo examination and it color codes the blood flow through the heart and any backflow is easily identified (regurgitation). The heart functionality is determined by the percentage of blood pumped with each heartbeat and referred to ejection fraction (EF).
Avatar m tn I am going to undergo a Heart Cath tomorrow and possible stenting to try to increase blood flow to my heart. Hope it is not more than a proverbial 'crap shoot'. This discussion is related to Low EF and MR.
369861 tn?1306275686 I'm a newbie here on the heart disease site and not very sure what is going on. This all started with my getting sick and going to the ER thinking that I am having a heart attack. It turned out that my potassium was very low and my glucose level was low. Prior to this ER episode, my potassium level was hovering around 3.3 for about 4 months. At the ER it was 2.6! I had been on HCT 25 mgand Diovan Hct 320/25 mg for about 2-3 years. My primary doctor took me off the HCT.
Avatar f tn There may be a different perspective for analysis of Marfin disease or a bicuspid aorta valve. These conditions are a tissue disorder and are more vulnerable and there should be no heavy lifting and absolute control of blood pressure. Thanks for your question and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Take care, and I wish you well going forward.
Avatar m tn If the angioplasty was successful your doctor will tell you to resume your normal eating habits and activities. obviously a heart health diet is recommended as well as appropriate exercise.
Avatar f tn The rightside vetricle of the heart when enlarged is usually due to pumping againist high resistence of the pulmonary artery and/or lungs. This condition is oftened due to pulmonary artery thrombosis (clot) and/or pulmonary emboli (clots). Thanks for your question, and if you have any further questions or comments you are invited to respond. Keep us informed.
Avatar f tn on a Transthoracis Echocardiogram Test I have 3 valves Mitral, Pulmonary and Tricuspid regurgatating trivial and mild in the Tricuspid Valve. Does this mean I have Pulmonary Hypertention? I also had right atrium and right ventricular dilatation on a 2007 and 2008 report. This new report says decreased in size of the right atrium and right ventricular. Does any one knows what that means? How and why would it decreased in size and why would it be dilated in the first place.
Avatar f tn Look at the millions of people for example who have had a heart attack and some heart muscle has died and turned into scar tissue, their collaterals didn't open. My main left artery completely blocked, and yet I didn't know until years later when another vessel blocked and had an angiogram. I didn't know because lots of collaterals had opened and kept me alive. I would just ask 2 questions because there are no guarantees here. 1. Did they use drug eluting stents or just plain ones.
Avatar f tn After all that has been said I can also just confirm: familial cholestorol is the primary reason for CAD's (coronary artery disease) and other heart related problems. My mum has CAD since her early 30's and Ischemic heart disease she is diabetic and she has Porphyria but she smoked all her life (quit 10 yrs ago, but the damage was already done), she is obese and unhealthy diet.
Avatar m tn but now with chest pressure and a bit burning sensation feeling. I went to a hospital and took a blood test, ECG and chest x ray and everything is fine. The doctor is guessing maybe it is acid reflux that is causing the burning sensation so gave me some Famotidine. Because it will have some side effects so I took Gaviscon double action tablet instead. The burning sensation did not get better but it seems to move down from my chest to my abdomen area and continue to burn for like 24 hours.
Avatar m tn Yes, your current symptoms can be related to ASD. For some insight a large ASD (>9mm), there will be shunting (blood flow from left atrium to right atrium). The extra blood from the left atrium may cause a volume overload of both the right atrium and the right ventricle. If untreated, this condition can result in enlargement of the right side, The increased size and overload will effect the entire lung vascular system and eventually pulmonary hypertension.
Avatar n tn Plavix works much like a blood thinner to keep blood cells from sticking together and forming additional clots. The Metoprolol and Ramipril are both used to control your blood pressure by slowing down your heart rate and keeping your heart from being "over worked". These can be difficult to get used to and can cause fatigue, dizziness and a feeling of being disconnected.
