Pacemaker action potential

Common Questions and Answers about Pacemaker action potential

pacemaker

Avatar f tn s own pacemaker does not work. Would I be out of line to ask them for a pacemaker replacement instead of just having more checks?
Avatar f tn what really is cardiac action potential and how does it work with potassium to lower the heart rate?
Avatar n tn This seems like a very difficult situation for you and your family. The best way to begin addressing this question is to ask your cardiologist whether your mother is "pacemaker dependent" or not. Pacemaker dependent means that the heart is reliant on the pacemaker, and without it, the heart cannot pump fast enough to meet the demands of the body. (There are others who need the pacemaker infrequently as a "back-up", for the rare times when the heart rate slows down).
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar m tn The pacemaker will record, I believe, any action it takes to maintain a minimum HR. If, after some period of time, the pacemaker is never activated it may be possible to conclude the pacemaker is not needed, i.e., remove it. Better safe than sorry...
Avatar f tn My friend recently had a pacemaker put in. Every since then she has had trouble is sudden drops in Blood Pressure. She has also had a problem with extreme increases in pulse just by standing up. Are these side effects, and should she be concerned?
Avatar f tn Why does the frequency of action potential decrease when threshold for the action potential is reached more slowly.
Avatar m tn I assume the heart rhythm medications are because her heart is normally pacing itself, that is the pacemaker comes into action only if the heart rate is too low. Then it is possible that the normal pace has some irregular characteristics that the medication is intended to help. I believe you took the correct action to discuss with the doctor prescribing the pacemaker and on being checked in the ER. From the little you have told us.
Avatar m tn The 30bpm rate seems to fit with Third-degree AV block (complete). Since the ventricles wouldn't be getting a signal to beat the ventricles would fall back to a fail safe that's called "escape rhythm" There are some pacers located in the ventricles that are there just-in-caser. Their action potential is lower and thus a lower rate. also wouldn't be in synch with atrial rhythm. The reason for this is because you can't survive without the ventricles working.
Avatar m tn Or Permanent Pacemaker is the only option. If the permanent pacemaker is not fitted, what will her health status in near future. Please give your suggestions ASAP because I am undergoing a lot of stress and pain.
Avatar n tn Symptoms of lightheadedness or fainting could be potential signs of a Medtronic pacemaker malfunction, and patients have been urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any problems.
Avatar n tn Normal is between 60-100. You probably need a pacemaker, I'm 27 and I have one but my rate was going into the 30s, so I would suggest seeing a cardiologist. For your age and having a blackout I wouldnt put it off any longer. Plus, 50 is the lowest you know of it going. You'll need to wear a monitor for days to see what its doing all the time. Chances are it may be going even lower.
Avatar n tn My 90 year old mother has had a pacemaker for more than a year with no complications or problems. She lives independently, uses a walker, and is relatively active for her age. Her cardiologist wants her to come in to talk about starting to take coumadin. This is not based on any recent testing, etc. Why would she need to take such a strong blood thinner, one with so many potential complications?
Avatar f tn Well first off, there are alot rythms you could have that would set alarm bells off, and you don't have any of them. I assure you if they saw something life threatening they would call you in stat..... Now lets talk about your rythms, all your ectopy or ectopic beats, are outside the "normal" range in other words.
Avatar f tn After placement of the electrodes, your dad may be asked to contract the muscle (for example, by bending your arm). The presence, size, and shape of the wave form -- the action potential -- produced on the oscilloscope provide information about the ability of the muscle to respond when the nerves are stimulated.
Avatar m tn Welcome to our Forum. I'll be pleased to comment. We have recently gotten a lot of questions about the possibility of someone acquiring asymptomatic gonorrhea (which occurs only 1/3% of the time), self-curing over several weeks (which is also not all that common) and transmitting infection to a partner. And while such a series of events might happen from time to time, it is incredibly unusual- so unusual as to not be a meaningful concern.

Avatar n tn MRIs do not involve exposure to radiation, the entire MRI image is generated from changes in magnetic field, and these magnetic exposures are not considered harmful unless a person has hardware in their body such as a pacemaker. Therefore, the harmful effects of radiation seen with other imaging modalities such as CT scan and X-ray are not present. Your son's symptoms could be due to a variety of things, but obviously one concern when involuntary movements of a limb occur are seizures.
Avatar f tn Hi, I found something interesting but keep in mind that I have no expertise at all in this area, I was merely browsing through sites for the specified pacing systems. For ALTRUA™ Pacemaker Family the following is written under Potential Adverse Events: "Potential adverse events include . . . DEATH . . .". For Medtronic Insync 8040 CRT death is not on the list.
Avatar n tn There is some concern with implanted devices such as pacemaker, etc. causing failure of the device. Foreign bodies are also potential risks, and safety aspects need to be considered on an individual basis. Interaction of the magnetic and radio frequency fields with such objects can lead to trauma due to movement of the object in the magnetic field, thermal injury from radio-frequency induction heating of the object. If there were a problem, it would be due to induction heating.
Avatar f tn This can easily be assessed with an echocardiogram. Another potential concern could be your pacemaker. If your heartrate does not go up adequately when you are exerting yourself, this can also make you feel tired and has less abilities to perform exertional tasks. I would speak with your cardiologist about having this looked into as well as taking another look at your pulmonic valve.
351404 tn?1299489130 I am sure your doctors gave very serious consideration to all the facts that are specific to you, not averages, and decided a pacemaker was the best action to take. I know two people a bit older than me who have pacemakers and while they can't run a marathon, they get around just fine.
Avatar n tn If however everything goes as planned, he will just have to go in through the groin, get the lead out, then go in her pacemaker site and swap out the pacemaker and put in the new lead. That way is MUCH better, no open heart surgery and recovery time would just be a matter of days instead of weeks. The doc said he'd seen 3 cases similar to hers in the past 10 years and everything went great with them. Her surgery is this Wednesday the 4th.
Avatar n tn My last pacemaker check revealed 1000 PVCs per week. Based on my calculation, that's about 8 PVCs per hour. I also have runs of SVT. This is my second pacemaker, and my cardiologist installed the device the first of September. I can't take a beta blocker because I have asthma. Of note my heart does about 99%, sometines 99.9%, of the work. Essentially my pacemaker is a monitoring device. I would like to know if there is cause for alarm? Am I a potential candidate for ablation?
Avatar m tn However that being said i am deathly afraid of the tragic potential life long consequences of my choice. most specificially based on symptomology HIV. Since then the following things have occured. Psychological deep painful regret and remorse which i know only confession to my partner will heal. Almost immediately after we were finished i began with pinpoint tenderness on the left side of the penis just below the head. WHich i realize is almost impossible to be anything...
1507741 tn?1290022955 I have been living for 14 months with complete Heart ablation 100% reliant on pacemaker. Doc says I need a new unit (AICD) apparently with defibulator. my question is, Does it hurt alot when a defibulator kicks in?

1331422 tn?1326566597 Does an EP have to do an EP study and ablation or can they just look at the monitor readings and put a pacemaker in? Who does the pacemaker? An EP or cardiac surgeon? I hate to go through an EP study if it really isn't necessary. I'm very tired of feeling so bad and want to cut to the chase without waiting much longer. I'd much rather have a pacemaker than mess around with ablations that may or may not work.
Avatar f tn It seems CHF was diagnosed 2 months ago. Recent visit with doctor (possible doctor isn't aware of potential problems with pacemaker!), and I assume the pacemaker functionality was/is evaluated by the recent visit based on mother's symptoms.... Is it the pacemaker or chronic congested heart failure! A pacemaker, even if functioning correctly, cannot always prevent worsening heart failure and death.
