Ondansetron is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting that can be caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment for cancer, or by surgery. Vomiting is controlled by an area of the brain called the vomiting centre. The vomiting centre is responsible for causing feelings of sickness (nausea) and for the vomiting reflex.
585414 tn?1288941302 The study found the combination to significantly improve negative schizophrenia symptoms, and people taking both drugs experienced fewer of the adverse effects commonly associated with haloperidol, an earlier, smaller, open-label trial had found ondansetron to be useful in treating antipsychotic-induced tardive dyskinesia in people with schizophrenia, and the study patients also showed significant improvement in the disease's symptoms.

Example, in the chemotherapy tracker there is no option to keep track of the anti-nausea medications that I receive each time I get chemo, nor is there a way to keep track of how many times I have to go back for additional fluids due to dehydration, etc. If we were able to add the meds and the fluids to the tracker, that would make it more informative and help in planning any future treatments.
Avatar m tn I agree, get some Zofran/Ondansetron. It works wonders. This is why they give to cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery patients. It is in a class of medications called 5-HT3 receptor antagonists and works by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance that may cause nausea and vomiting. I just got a bottle of 30 Ondansetron on Medicare for $5. There are also other similar meds you can take so you should find a solution and not have to deal with what you have been.
Avatar f tn Ondansetron is the generic for Zofran. Why would you refuse it? It's safe to take or your Dr wouldn't prescribe it to you. There's other meds out there if you don't want to take it. My Dr gave me Diclegis. It helped take the edge off the nausea.
Avatar f tn It depends somewhat on what is causing your nausea and how severe it is. The promethazine Dee mentions is effective but can also be quite sedating for some people. I couldn't stay awake if my life depended on it when I took that drug. Ginger is very safe and can be very helpful for mild nausea, but didn't even touch my severe nausea. The miracle drug for me was ondansetron, commonly given to chemotherapy patients.
2147300 tn?1369689688 5HT released by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery also activates the 5HT3 receptors that are found in the CTZ in the brain, causing further messages to be sent to the vomiting centre. Ondansetron works by blocking the 5HT3 receptors that are found in the brain and gut. This prevents the nausea messages being sent from these areas to the vomiting centre. Ondansetron therefore prevents nausea, retching and vomiting that can otherwise occur following surgery or due to cancer treatments.
Avatar f tn Ondansetron is Zofran hun. Its just the generic name for zofran. Even though theres a lawsuit, id say its more of a money maker. I took it both pregnancies and my babies came out fine. Youve got to look at whether the benefits outweigh the risk with ANY medication. If youre miserable and need to eat for baby, take it. My advice is try to only take it when u really need it, not on a regular basis. Stop as soon as symptoms ease up. Lots of water too.
1201433 tn?1328997637 Ondansetron reduces the activity of the vagus nerve, which deactivates the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata, and also blocks serotonin receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your quick response! As you will see in profile, in my other posts, my mother is in the hospital right now from severe vomitting caused from the ascites. It has lessened, thank God, but still throwing up at least 2 to 3 times a day. MUCH better than Friday and Saturday. The oncologist met with us today finally (after the holiday weekend) and talked about draining the ascites possibly tomorrow, and setting up the port maybe this week.
484033 tn?1208516117 The three drugs I mentioned can all cause some degree of nausea and vomiting, with Oxaliplatin having the greatest potential for causing this symptom (65% chance of nausea and vomiting when given as a single agent, and 90% when given in combination with Fluorouracil). In actual practice, I seldom see patients who are receiving Capecitabine, Oxaliplatin or Fluorouracil experience nausea and vomiting. This is because there are a lot of drugs (e.g.

Avatar f tn No abnormalities were noted in the offspring of these two women. Ondansetron is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Avatar f tn Zofran/Ondansetron is also used in pregnancy. I felt safe using this during pregnancy as I have known more women who have used it without any problems. it's a newer drug and works very well without the sedating side effects that promethazine can have. Here is the FDA information too. Ondansetron has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Animal studies failed to reveal evidence of fetal damage. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy.
Avatar m tn "I'm finding that taking ondansetron isn't working very well for me anymore, especially in the mornings." So how long did it work for you and when are you starting the granisetron? Do you know if your doctor has given these meds to other patients on tx or is it just a hit and miss approach? I think it's great that he's willing to look outside of the box but I've never heard of either one being used.
Avatar m tn I am currently in my 9th week of triple tx and am really having a hard time with nausea. I currently take hydroxzine and ondansetron, but I'm finding the nausea is getting worse. At first the ondansetron worked pretty good, but over the week or so I have been really struggling to keep everything down. Food and meds. What are some other meds I can take? I tried compazine last week and that was a disaster for me.
Avatar f tn I went to the er and got ondansetron (generic for zofran) but the doc prescribed it bc I literally kept nothing but one icee a day down. I got a script for 12 and thats it. All I know is they do not prescribe it to one indivodual in large quantities and that bc it can affect and stay in your blood for so long they have to monitor how much an individual gets.
2062505 tn?1331089288 2 ounces of chedder cheese or Havarti cheese will do the trick. Ice cream (not low fat) is also good. Brautwurst has a lot of fat in it. One avacado contains enough fat for an Incivek dose. I think cream cheese is another high fat food. You need to read the labels. The food labels will tell you how much fat is in it and how much you ave to eat for a certain amount of fat. For other foods like avacados, you can find the fat content on the internet.
1916673 tn?1420233270 Hi Tony, I personally used the following about a year ago, as prescribed by a Doctor. Found that it was RAPID and LONG LASTING and 100% effective. Haven't done any research or asked a Vet. All I know is, that it is EFFECTIVE and long lasting. The chemical name(s):: 'ONDANSETRON ODT'...4mg or 'ZOFRAN ODT'....4mg (Mfg.
Avatar f tn I was put on 50 mg of zoloft a month ago and have had nausea ever since. It seems like it's been getting worse over the last couple of weeks. Yesterday I was prescribed Ondansetron ODT 4mg. It doesn't seem to help. Will the nausea go away?
Avatar n tn He has recommended tamoxifen for 5 years after radiotherapy. We understand that in the context of risk vs benefit chemotherapy in my wife's case doesn't make sense. Most of the benefit she would derive would be from a reduction of risk of contralateral disease, and tamoxifen as prevention seems a little more complicated. How long does she takes it, more than 5 years? When does she stops receiving a benefit?
