Avatar n tn It is trickier if the bowel obstruction is due to blockages in multiple areas of the bowel or if the bowel is functionally obstructed due to wide spread coating of cancer on the bowel. That is called carcinomatosis b. In that setting, the person will benefit from the placement of a gastrostomy tube to drain the stomach so that the NG tube can be removed. So you see how important a CT scan is in helping sort this out. Even at the end of life vomiting continuous is just horrible and avoidable.
Avatar f tn I have had alot of constipation and bowel obstruction, I use Miralax twice daily, went to the health store and bought a bottle of Aloe Vera w/Cascara Sagrada and also take Amitiza, a prescription laxative that I take 1 time daily. I went on a 4 day liquid fast with all of the things that you have tried and still had food bezoar in stomach when doctor did and endoscopy. Good luck!
Avatar n tn If they suspect a bowel obstruction, maybe the stool cannot get past the blockage, but then you'd be vomiting and in extreme pain. Why are to trying to cleanse your system, and what is wrong?
Avatar f tn I feel as if I have another bowel obstruction and have been fairly sick lately. My gastro will only order a KUB Xray. This Xray has never shown my obstructions in the past. For the past week, I haven't passed any stool. I've gotten sick every time I eat as well, but not to the point of vomiting. Yesterday my skin was very flush and I didn't feel well at all. The gastro ordered another KUB stat, which the radiologist said read as normal.
Avatar m tn I am recovering from a bowel obstruction. It was resolved without surgery. My HCP said I should start with a surgical soft diet and advance as tolerated. I was released from the hospital last thursday 3/14 and still experiencing diarrhea once or twice a day. Is this normal? I did eat chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes for supper tonight, and it has been worse tonight. How long does it typically take to get back on a normal diet?
Avatar n tn In January 2009 I developed severe abdominal cramping and bloating/distention. The cramping soon led to violent vomiting which sent me to the hospital ER. I was told I have probably had bowel obstruction. I was admitted to the hospital for 5 days while numerous X-ray's were taken of my abdomen. Before the doctors could find the blockage it had "corrected itself" according to the doctors. I was then sent home.
Avatar n tn He had to have surgery due to a small bowel obstruction which was most likely brought on by his double hernia operation. He is home now, but all day has been throwing up. He is confused a little and I am concerned because he does get encephaloptic. I am worried he has another sbo. Is this possible and how will I know when I should call the ambulance? I am afraid to go to sleep this evening as he might not be responsive in the am.
Avatar m tn Less than a year later he had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with bowel obstruction due to scar tissue. He had surgery again to repair. Now, three years later, he had another high grade obstruction. He was in the hospital 2 days. They treated the obstruction with ng tube and iv. The obstruction was resolved and he is now at home. My question is, how long will this go on? Will it occur again? He has been through so much already.

Avatar m tn t the bowel movements be the same every time. I mean, they would never be normal, right? The obstruction would not move? I am so sorry if this is an inappropriate or dumb question but I am so nervous about the colonoscopy. Otherwise I had ct scan done and it was ok besides diverticulosis....it shows no problems with the colon otherwise and no gas or fluid obstructions.. Thanks for all of your help. Your work here is for sure appreciated by every member...
Avatar m tn I have only today come out of Hospital again, Diagnosed with Functional Bowel Obstruction, And they are saying they think i also have a Dysfunctional Bowel.. Avatar n tn Personally, I think it far more likely a medical problem such as a bolus/partial obstruction, than psychological, so I'd merely confirm with her that she knows it's something to avoid when readily avoidable, then book her in for a doctor consultation.
Avatar m tn You almost surely do not have a bowel obstruction. You might have something that resembles a bowel obstruction but your symptoms do not match a bowel obstruction. It might be IBS and this should be checked out by a specialist.
Avatar f tn Ondansetron is Zofran hun. Its just the generic name for zofran. Even though theres a lawsuit, id say its more of a money maker. I took it both pregnancies and my babies came out fine. Youve got to look at whether the benefits outweigh the risk with ANY medication. If youre miserable and need to eat for baby, take it. My advice is try to only take it when u really need it, not on a regular basis. Stop as soon as symptoms ease up. Lots of water too.
Avatar f tn Ondansetron is the generic for Zofran. Why would you refuse it? It's safe to take or your Dr wouldn't prescribe it to you. There's other meds out there if you don't want to take it. My Dr gave me Diclegis. It helped take the edge off the nausea.
Avatar m tn Good Afternoon Doctor, I have a colonoscopy scheduled for 4/18 because of inconsistent bowel movements. I have been having back pains but it is due to a strain pair of muscles in my upper buttocks. My orthopedic doctor seems to think that the changes in bowel movements (at times regular and at times flat, and at times small) are due to the strain muscle in my upper buttocks and lower back. My gastro wants to do a colonoscopy to make sure it is not an obstruction and to diagnoe IBS.

Avatar n tn What makes a bowel obstruction inoperable? Many feet of bowel can be removed and the patient can live. I would get a second opinion. A coloscopy can be done to bypass in the bowel, especially when you say her health is good. give her a chance.
Avatar f tn For about 12 weeks I have noticed I have been constipated. Bowel movements are rare and very small. I have attributed that to high iron prenatal vitamins, pregnancy and lack of meals. I was overweight when I became pregnant, and have gained 16 pounds since the beginning of my pregnancy, so I have not worried that I am wasting away. But I am beginning to think my small intestines were blocked.
1897635 tn?1321402214 It represents an important late diagnostic clue to a potentially life-threatening GI disorder because complete obstruction of any part of the bowel, if untreated, can cause death within hours from vascular collapse and shock. When the obstructed or adynamic intestine attempts self-decompression by regurgitating its contents, vigorous peristaltic waves propel bowel contents backward into the stomach. When the stomach fills with intestinal fluid, further reverse peristalsis results in vomiting.
1030526 tn?1252290533 They were trying to get a team of Dr. together...when one night i was in extreme pain....The cyst caused bowel obstruction in two places. This was a 13 day stay in hosp. Then I come home , and i thought i was fine...but had another, small bowel obstruction....Dr. says he thinks it was just a "fluke." I am now almost 12 weeks post op. Avatar m tn If she has any bowel movement changes, especially difficulty having a bowel movement, topical pain like she is experiencing could be a partial obstruction. If she had a complete obstruction, she would have about 12-24 hours to get it relieved or it would be a fatal condition. I had a partial obstruction, and my symptoms were what you report, and it became a total obstruction that led to emergency surgery. When the bowel is obstructed, organs start shutting down rather quickly.
Avatar f tn She opted to pursue alternative therapies at the time of this recurrence instead of the recommended chemo. She developed a bowel obstruction in early Jan 2008 and has had an NG tube/ IV nutrition since then. On top of that, she's developed multiple holes in her diaphragm and her ascites has been migrating to her chest cavity.
