It would involve one daily injection of a long-acting insulin like Lantus, which has a flat action profile over 24 hours. And a shot of Humalog or Novolog before each meal. Doing this would minimise the carb/insulin mismatch when you skip a meal. The basal/bolus regimen would give you more flexibility and better control. You may want to discuss this with your doctor.

Hello Geek, I didn't see your msg until today and hope I can be of some help to you. I'm not a physician, but I have been a pumper for ~9 years and have had DM for ~35. When I starated pumping, the only insulins available were "Regular" insulin and the main difference, as you know, is "how quickly" the insulin starts working, when it peaks and how long it lasts. Regular normally kicks in later than Novolog or Humalog will.

If you have a meter and strictly monitor results of various combinations under vary circumstances use of both medications should cause no problems. Be careful using the Novolog because you can easily drop your blood sugar to very low levels.

I agree with KevinHarney. NPH insulin is an older type of insulin, and it has a VERY noticeable "peak" action that happens in the middle of the day, around 3 pm. I grew up on NPH and really had to watch for mid-day lows. Most doctors nowadays use Lantus alone as the long-lasting insulin and have given up NPH altogether because of the scary lows that often happen when it peaks.

My father was recently discharged from a nursing home and he takes 2 different kinds of insulin. Novolog 70/30 and Novolog Aspart (Sliding Scale). Hello, I was wondering if anyone might know if there is any illness that can cause a rapid drop in blood sugars. I have gone from 20 units of novolog before meals to 6 units of novolog before meals in 3 weeks. What can cause this? Still eating same as always. Thank you for your time!!

Your weight gain could be because of the same thing, your body reacts differently to different types of insulin, and now your body is trying to figure out how to deal with lantus.
