Niaspan fatty liver

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan fatty liver

niaspan

Avatar m tn I am a 33-year-old male diagnosed with a fatty liver. I have slightly elevated triglycerides with low HDL. My doctor correlates the latter to the former. Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL.
Avatar f tn As for the mildly elevated enzymes - could be the drugs, could be fatty liver, and could be something else.... I would think those levels would only require a 2x annual testing...
Avatar n tn Sectral, coumadin, or lovenox are associated with elevated liver enzymes. Niasan (Niaspan) and tarka (verapamil) can increased liver enzymes. I really can't advise you on stopping medications, you should talk to your doctors about that one but niacin and verapamil can increase liver enzymes and are worth asking your doctor about. I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn Perhaps the only other thing that was holding me back from taking the Niacin is the “moderately fatty liver’ which was found on my CT scan when looking for something else back in May. The Dr. must have taken that into account as when I told him he replied-”Diabetics usually have fatty liver”. I have neglected my health for far too long and as far as the Metabolic Syndrome goes-You hit the nail right on the head!
Avatar n tn I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.
Avatar m tn From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar n tn There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect. A fatty liver, it takes between 6 months and 2 years to fully reverse. Dr Sandra Cabot's article "Fatty Liver - What Is Fatty Liver And How To Reverse It?
Avatar n tn You have to get yourself properly evaluated for the fatty liver changes. Fatty liver can be due to alcoholism when it is called Alcoholic fatty liver disease and the other one is Non alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is due to obesity, diabetes and high triglyceride levels. This can progress to cirrhosis of the liver and can be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. So, prevention or cure is by avoiding alcohol and treating diabetes, obesity and high triglyceride levels.
Avatar m tn I recently had an ultrasond-7/2014- and the findings were - Mild increase in heoatic echotexture. Can be seen in early hepatic steatosis.(Fatty Liver) GI says he doesn't think I have fatty liver. He thoght it was just inflammation. I am 5'1" height, 120 lbs. Don't drink alcohol, soda, etc. However I did consume quite a bit of fruit - mostly apples, oranges, bananas. I have cut way back since - no bananas at all. Had CT scan 5/2012 liver appeared fine.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a nonalcoholic fatty liver and had a biopsy and it is 50% fat. I could not take statins and my cholesterol, trig, etc. was sky high. I finally got a doctor who found a statin that I could take without all the side effects and my numbers are going down but it's only been two months that I have been on this.
Avatar f tn But other foods and sugary drinks can cause steatosis (fat) development in the liver. Fortunately though, fatty liver disease can be reversed and even eliminated relatively quickly, when compared to the other etiologies of liver disease. By focusing on fresh, unprocessed foods as the main portions of his new, healthy diet, he can start on making his liver as good as new. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits with minimal amounts of vegetable or animal fats - olive oil is good.
Avatar m tn Keep in mind that fatty liver is very easy to improve, but it will take disipline. You need to work with your doctor and try to improve your diet and add exercise as well. In fact, fatty livers can be resolved in just several months, n some cases. But you do need to make changes. Your numbers aren't alarming but they are a warning. Take care.
Avatar m tn Then i had a ultrasound and CT scan and the doc said that i have an enlarged fatty liver and sterosis or something like that. What causes this? I dont drink alcohol at all or smoke or use drugs. The doc didnt give me any medication or tell me any advice or anything he just reffered me to a specialist and in have to wait months before he sees me. Can anyone offer me some advice on diet or what the problem could be?I feel its getting worse and i dont even have a proper diagnosis yet.
Avatar m tn Triglycerides (TG) are actually the fats which get deposited in the liver causing fatty streaks within the organ. Any fatty liver condition is associated with impaired fat breakdown. TGs are broken down and stored within the liver. When circulating levels of TGs surpass the livers ability to break them down they are just enter storage instead. This makes it easy to understand how chronic high TG levels can lead to a fatty liver.
Avatar f tn Liver problems including hepatitis are easily detected by an ultrasound scan and liver enzymes (which are raised). Hepatitis can result in fatty liver, but usually fatty liver is associated with fat rich diet, drinking alcohol, diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemias (high cholesterol and triglycerides). The good thing is that it responds to diet control and exercise. Also, yes, inflammatory bowel disease (which also causes lot of gas and stool problems) can also cause fatty liver.
Avatar f tn From the report there is evidence of fatty liver changes in the liver. Also, it shows inflammation of the liver with some fibrosis. This is graded to determine the progression of liver disease. The report indicates an ongoing inflammatory change in the liver. The galls stone is unlikely to have produced these changes in the liver. It could be due to alcohol. And stopping alcohol would be the first step to prevent any further damage to the liver. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have fatty liver. My liver enzymes have been elevated. Since I am 55 and haven't had a colonoscopy yet ( they think that i have a death wish}. Doctor won't treat me if i don't get one. Why would it be necessary for me to have a colonoscopy if i have a fatty liver. Would just diet and excercise fix the problem? Doctor said that fat in the diet is not the problem but carbs is. But the procedures for getting ready for the colonoscopy is carbs.
Avatar n tn Just recently I did an ultrasound and was diagnosed with fatty liver. This past week or two I have been feeling nauseau and have some pain in the lowr right under my rib cage. My doctor said not to worry about it but I was wondering why I am still having these symptoms if just fatty liver does not cause the symptoms that I have.
Avatar m tn I had moderate fatty liver 1 year ago(SGOT 150). Yesterday, after a good dietary and sport ,my SGOT is 24 and SGPT 38.(I'm very glad for it) So what is your advise for me?
471161 tn?1317190950 This much alcohol use can be additive to the liver damage to fatty liver and can also contribute to further weight gain. he must change his life style as in some cases fatty liver can result in cirrhosis.
