Avatar m tn I'm 52 and have never have had high liver enzymes. Took 500 mg of Slo Niacin for about a month between 12/15/13 and 1/15/14 and ALT went from 36 to 60, AST from 39 to 63, and GGT from about low 30's to 110!! based on blood testing done 1/15/14. Previous normal liver bloodwork from chemistry profile was from physical back in late July of 2013. Only a social drinker (few beers on weekend).
Avatar m tn that claim to cure fatty liver. Weight management is key to remission of fatty liver even if your liver is able to repair itself some damage [scar tissue] may remain. Be careful with things like Tylenol and Motrinwhile having bouts of NASH, this can impair your liver's ability to cleanse your body of toxins. If you are on statin medications discuss lowering thedose with your doctor to see if the symptoms and problems lessen.

Avatar m tn From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
Avatar n tn Oh and my ALT for my liver function a few years ago was like 91 which was due to the fatty liver now it IS 49 so it looks like the liver might be getting better, so what would still be causing the others to be out of whack. I am really concerned. Also I don't eat sugar anymore other than what is in soy milk or in fruit. I don't eat any kind of meat and I exercise 30 mins a day cardio.
Avatar n tn hi i have white dots on my nails for more then 5 months now, they wont go, i was being investigated for liver issues but it turns out it was fatty liver, i decided to start losing weight and stuff, wel i lost 2 stones quite rapidly, could this have caused the dots? but its been a good few months i havent lost weight, i have gone back to my normal diet too, i heard liver issues can cause them but are rare and kidney disease, would this be due to the rapid weight losss? some kind of defficiency?

Avatar m tn Still on the niacin and fish oil in high doses...liver is fine. The vitamin D and cocoa seem to be the most likely cause of the 50% jump in HDL. If you can get a test for Vitamin D levels, that might be a good way to go without trying all the other stuff. It is most likely the D vitamin. My own HDL has been as low as 22 and never was over low 40's in my life. I am in my late 60's and have 7 stents and one MI that left me with a 35% ejection fraction...

Avatar f tn I take 65mg Iron pills 2X/day, 250mg Niacin 3X/day. I also take a few other pills where liver and kidney functions must be watched. So far everything is working good! My Iron is still a bit low but we're waiting on the next blood test in three months before we adjust that again. I take Niacin to lower my cholesterol. In three months my HDL dropped by two points and LDL dropped like a rock to half what it was.
Avatar n tn If you have stage 4 liver disease (cirrhosis) you should consult with your hepatologist regarding any changes to diet and and any over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or herbs before taking them. Many can be toxic to a cirrhotic liver an increase liver damage and in some individuals cause decompensation and liver failure depending on a patient's liver disease and the amount of the toxin.
Avatar f tn Like I said, the ultra sound revealed a mild fatty liver which neither the nurse practitioner or surgeon seemed worried about. My liver enzymes were normal except for bilirubin which was 3.2 which they diagnosed years ago as Gilbert's Syndrome. I know rapid weight loss can cause that and I did loose about 7-10 lbs in a week because of the pain eating. I know it's reversible and I know diet is a part of it which I'm cleaning up. Is it okay to cheat every now and then with a treat?
Avatar n tn t advise you on stopping medications, you should talk to your doctors about that one but niacin and verapamil can increase liver enzymes and are worth asking your doctor about. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of niacin affecting the body in a bad way especially pertaining to the liver and thyroid.
Avatar m tn Perhaps the only other thing that was holding me back from taking the Niacin is the “moderately fatty liver’ which was found on my CT scan when looking for something else back in May. The Dr. must have taken that into account as when I told him he replied-”Diabetics usually have fatty liver”. I have neglected my health for far too long and as far as the Metabolic Syndrome goes-You hit the nail right on the head!

Avatar n tn Extended release niacin is arguably just as good as any drug on the market in terms of HDL and LDL effect. It can be tough on the liver but if you have normal liver function then its a legit alternative to statins (my father in law's cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years).
Avatar n tn There have been a few cases of liver failure possibly related to the use of mesalamine (the active ingredient in Asacol HD), but I haven't read anything about fatty liver as a side effect. Avatar n tn You have to get yourself properly evaluated for the fatty liver changes. Fatty liver can be due to alcoholism when it is called Alcoholic fatty liver disease and the other one is Non alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is due to obesity, diabetes and high triglyceride levels. This can progress to cirrhosis of the liver and can be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. So, prevention or cure is by avoiding alcohol and treating diabetes, obesity and high triglyceride levels.

Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with a nonalcoholic fatty liver and had a biopsy and it is 50% fat. I could not take statins and my cholesterol, trig, etc. was sky high. I finally got a doctor who found a statin that I could take without all the side effects and my numbers are going down but it's only been two months that I have been on this.
Avatar f tn But other foods and sugary drinks can cause steatosis (fat) development in the liver. Fortunately though, fatty liver disease can be reversed and even eliminated relatively quickly, when compared to the other etiologies of liver disease. By focusing on fresh, unprocessed foods as the main portions of his new, healthy diet, he can start on making his liver as good as new. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits with minimal amounts of vegetable or animal fats - olive oil is good.
Avatar m tn Keep in mind that fatty liver is very easy to improve, but it will take disipline. You need to work with your doctor and try to improve your diet and add exercise as well. In fact, fatty livers can be resolved in just several months, n some cases. But you do need to make changes. Your numbers aren't alarming but they are a warning. Take care.
