Niacin with alcohol

Common Questions and Answers about Niacin with alcohol

niaspan

Avatar m tn I started him on Niacin(B1) yesterday, and he is better. I guess Niacin is depleted during severe alcohol use, and it is important for brain function. He received injections of it in re-hab. he switched over to drinking massive amounts of soda when he got out, and that can deplete it too.
Avatar n tn Which vitamins are most depleted in one's body when drinking alcohol excessively?
Avatar n tn HI and thanks for using the forum. Niacin is a B vitamin and is used in reducing cholesterol. A common side effect of Niacin is flushing. The flushing makes your skin red in color and sometimes warm to the touch. Sometimes, taking an aspirin before taking the niacin can prevent the flushing. Don't do this without discussing it with your doctor. Drinking hot drinks or alcohol can also increase the flushing, so it is best to avoid these when taking the niacin.
Avatar m tn niacin vitamin, the type with slow release, also double check online there is a type of niacin which doesn t work i dont remember the name (its the one without red skin effect) liposomal gsh from livonlabs fish oil, epa+dha 2g minimum daily vit d3 5000iu or higher according to your blood levels
600301 tn?1219689156 Whereas there is a strong link between low HDL and risk for cardiac death and heart attacks, there is very little evidence that increasing it with drugs ( appart from gemfibrozil and Niacin) actually improves patient's mortality.
Avatar m tn You have a polyneuropathy which could be due to vitamin B12 deficiency,B6 deficiency, alcoholism, diabetes, uremia etc. You need to stop alcohol intake, supplement vitamins, investigate with blood tests if you have diabetes and renal function. MRI spine should also be done to look for any disc herniation causing the tingling, numbness. A detailed neurological examination for sensory, motor systems and autonomic system, the reflexes should all be checked for any associated deficits.
Avatar m tn s seem a little high so maybe cut down on the simple sugars or drop the alcohol to one drink or maybe switch from beer to wine if relevant. Personally, I would not take Niacin with a TC of 130 and in fact I'm quite jealous of your numbers. They are almost as good as mine and I'm Lipitor!
Avatar n tn The first thing he did was to have a Hepatitus C test, which was negative. As an airline pilot, he avoided alcohol, since he never knew when he might be tested, so alcohol is definitely not the problem. He paid, out of pocket (since he lost his health benefits) for an ultrasound on his lower abdomen. He was told he has a healthy liver, gall bladder and pancreas. Prior to losing his job, he was training vigorously for a marathon and an Ironman event.

718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
1202943 tn?1347840652 I had 3 more episodes of flushing that were WAY less severe In the following days. It always happens and hour or two after eating and I can feel my body heating up. Then I get the splotchy neck . I do take a Super B complex vitamin all most everyday. Maybe I am getting enough in my diet already and should quit taking this. On two of the days it happened I had steamed asparagus and Brocolli, which are maybe high in B3. The other day I had a salad with greens and a bunch of vegi's.
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar m tn Also consumed 3 grams/day of omega 3 supplements and was on a relatively low carb diet during this period. Pretty sure the sustained release Niacin may be culprit but anyone familiar with anything else that would raise these three enzymes as noted above. I have stopped the Slo Niacin. What's a reasonable time to recheck blood after getting off the Niacin....a month? Also, note that BUN/Creatine just slightly high and ALP, Bilirubin, A/G,Albumin, etc liver markers were all normal.
Avatar n tn There is only one interaction that would be of any concern. Treatment with both simvastatin and niacin may result in muscle pain or tenderness or muscle weakness. Using simvastatin together with niacin is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If you are using both medicines together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines. It is important to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines that you are using.
Avatar n tn Certain medications, trauma, inflammation (myositis), alcohol, genetic problems with the muscle, and viral infections can all cause CPK elevation. CPK is an enzyme that is found within muscle cells. When the muscle cells are damaged for any reason, the CPK is released into the blood resulting to increased levels in the test. I would recommend that you continue monitoring your CPK levels and have regular follow-up with your doctor. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn So, make sure you run everything by your doctor and come up with a mutually agreed upon plan. Niacin HAS been used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all.
463841 tn?1207438535 While niacin is not a drug I encounter often at the hospital, I know that many doctors have us withold this med, especially in patients with cardiovascular issues. Quite a few years ago, while I was browsing the shelves in a health food store, the clerk asked me what I was looking for. I told him I had severe panic disorder and he immediately recommended that I take large doses of niacin, as he said it's good for people with anxiety problems.
Avatar f tn I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08. I do not have any symptoms. I just received the second blood draw for a possible job in Antarctica.
Avatar n tn I could not find anyone else who had had a mania symptoms with niacin. However, it was clearly what I was having. My daughter was hospitalized with mania on Wed. (2 days ago) and I am starting to wonder if her situation was aggravated by the 500 mg of niacin she has been taking over the last 2 weeks or helped. She is now on Olanzapine (50 mg) at bedtime until she gets a consult with an outpatient urgent care. DOES NIACIN CAUSE MANIA?
Avatar m tn Mild elevations of liver enzymes AST, ALT, and GGT started sometime late 2013 or early 2014 and still are elevated. By mild, AST and ALT around 60 and GGT about 100. Never have had that problem before and hadn't had any alcohol since 1/24/14. Had full bloodwork and ultrasound from a hepatologist a month or so ago and everything was normal except the high enzymes. Note that high dose purified fish oil seems to lower the alt/ast about 10-15 pts but has little effect on GGT.
Avatar n tn Timed-release niacin is commonly prescribed to prevent arterioschlerosis. It acts as a mild vasodilator, relaxing the blood vessels and improving the microcirculation. The "fast-acting" niacin causing flushing of the face and sometimes itching. There should be no problems whatsoever with discontinuing niacin "cold-turkey" , nor should there be any withdrawal symptoms.
