Common Questions and Answers about Niacin prescription

niaspan

Avatar f tn Odd, but I've never really felt the "flush" so many people describe when I take my prescription Niacin (500 mg). I think I might have felt a very mild flush the very first time I took it, but its been completely unnoticeable for me since then. Maybe I've got a bad batch or something.
1495437 tn?1288798915 I am a 32 year old female that took 3 Niacin supplement pills in 1996. I was told that they would de-toxify my body, and is very healthy for me. I took the pills before bed one night, and was lying there feeling an intense burning all over my body, my esophagus was on fire, I stood up unable to breathe, and gasped for air, feeling light headed, I went to the landing on our staircase trying to get downstairs, that was the last thing I remember.

Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar n tn I only had stage 1 fibrosis and elected not to take Niaspan (prescription Niacin). I was going to take this to lower my cholesterol but changed my mind at last minute. Most lipid meds are bad for the liver.
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar f tn Are you taking any medications, either prescription or OTC that contain niacin? Niacin can cause flushing which happens when our blood vessels expand (which niacin is used for) and the blood rises closer to our skin which can cause really intense sensations of heat, extreme itching and a deep red "flush" of color to our skin which is usually limited to the upper portion of our bodies...........chest, neck, arms and head. I'm afraid that pretty much sums up my guesses.
Avatar n tn Most are not aware of this fact smokers do not inhale nicotine directly, they burn it first creating the purest most effective form of Vitamin B3 [niacin] known. Although the medical community is currently selling the marvels of overpriced smoking patches which are almost completely ineffective in reducing the cravings smokers feel when trying to quit. The symptoms you described are very similar to what smoker feels when quitting.
Avatar n tn (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg. But I do not know if these are general recomendations based on research or if they fit my own profile, which is Triglycerides 89 (lowest they have been) HDL 51 (has fluctuated between 50 and 68)) LDL 86 (lowest yet) CK protein 290 (where normal is 40-180).---> I HAVE NO MUSCLE PAIN ALT 29.
Avatar m tn Niacin is important for the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy! Adults need about 16 milligrams a day. Almonds, Niacin Content: 1 oz, 1 mg Daily Value: 6%. Eat them right before you go the gym. Their high in L-arginine that can actually boost your carb and fat burn during your workout. Navy Beans, Niacin: 1/2 cup, 1.5 mg Daily Value: 9%. They contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that boosts calorie burn by up to 23%.
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar m tn By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar f tn I hope this is it. Is this possible? by the way, I think niacin helps. Niacin helps when our brain gets stressed and adrenaline produces a hormone that makes us feel bad. I took niacin today and that seemed to help. I will keep posting until I am done but I must thank those few who did give me feedback here. I didn't get very much feedback. but what little I got really helped. Thank you.
Avatar f tn How much Niacin were you taking daily? Was your physician aware you were going to take the Niacin to lower your cholesterol? Were you taking any other medications at the same time?
Avatar n tn I am bipolar and have taken niacin for years....I took 500mg of niacin the reagular kind not the no flush kind It did cause me to have a niacin flush (which is typical)...it has never caused me trouble with mainia only made me flush wich eased anxiety and caused me to be tired afterwards...It might affect others diffently though. Nician is a B vitamin and B vitmins can cause you to more energetic you shouldn't take them in excess esp if you have bipolar....
463841 tn?1207438535 If so, then he/she would certainly be able to advise you on the wisdom of taking this. Niacin can be good in many respects, but it can also be bad in others. Better to play it safe. You take care, OK? And let us know what your doc says.
Avatar n tn Lipitor 5 mg, baby aspirin, fish oil (about 3-4 grams).
Avatar n tn I know someone who had his niacin prescription interact with Claritan-D (after he switched from Walgreens to Walmart brand) and he got chest pains and a rash on his chest. He takes them at opposite times of the day now and that fixed it. The allergy test is a good idea. See if avoiding caffeine helps (just try to get more sleep).
Avatar n tn re told that vigorous exercise can cause an elevation in ALT levels, but not that much. He is trying to restrict niacin, because he was told that might affect his ALT result if he's sensitive to niacin. We're really grasping for straws at this point. Has anyone had a similar experience? What was the underlying reason for the high ALT result? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
