Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar m tn 3 oz, 7.8 mg Daily Value: 49% Just under 50 percent of the day’s niacin in a three-ounce serving. Tuna Packed in Water, Niacin Content: 3 oz, 8.6 mg Daily Value: 54% Canned tuna is the best source of niacin, and it’s packed with docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 that stunts the growth of belly fat cell. Canned chunk tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” enjoy two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. I don't trust the FDA!
Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took 500 mg a day of Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw came up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar n tn how can i raise the HDL? I have started taking Fish oil(combo fish, borage, flaxseed) and i need to get in teh exercise routine. I dont drink but if drinking 1 glass of red wine will help i will. (Ill hold my nose ;) Am i in danger of an immediate heart attack? This has stressed me out to no end and i can stop looking online about it and everything i read is so upsetting. How much fish oil can I safely take? I can read about Niacin........
Avatar m tn red skin and feeling hot, this is due to the increase in hdl that opens up vessels and this is actually good even if you may feel having red skin and feeling hotter is strange, no worries about this by the way you may also try ezetimibe since the recent news of entry interference on hbv and no sdies from this drug, while i d not try statins
Avatar n tn suggested a change, but cardiologist said no need to. Another Dr. (forum) suggested using, in addition to Fish oil for tri-glycerides, niacin. And he said statin users should take CO-enzyme Q 300 mg. But I do not know if these are general recomendations based on research or if they fit my own profile, which is Triglycerides 89 (lowest they have been) HDL 51 (has fluctuated between 50 and 68)) LDL 86 (lowest yet) CK protein 290 (where normal is 40-180).---> I HAVE NO MUSCLE PAIN ALT 29.
Avatar n tn Extended release niacin is arguably just as good as any drug on the market in terms of HDL and LDL effect. It can be tough on the liver but if you have normal liver function then its a legit alternative to statins (my father in law's cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years).
Avatar m tn Eggs do contain cholesterol, but are not shown to raise the cholesterol in our bodies. Fish oil pills are an excellent way to raise your HDL and lower LDL due to the high content of the Omege 3 fatty acids that they contain. Anything that has a high Omega 3 content will have this effect, such as flax seed. Most commercial eggs are commonly high in Omega 6 fatty acids due to the fact that they are raised in cages and eat the seeds of plants that have a high Omega 6 content.
Avatar m tn 1000 mg a day of an omega-3 fish oil supplement will help with the microcirculation. In addition long acting niacin will help. The specific product to treat such cramps was quinine sulfate, which was sold for a hundred years without a prescription. Recently the FDA took it off the market, but there may be some health food stores that still have a supply.
Avatar m tn After getting the HDL numbers to 43 (from 28 in 2009) by using plain niacin, fish oil and exercise, a shotgun approach of natural possibilities to raise HDL was adopted in December 2010. Currently use vitamin D, 2 tbs cocoa in my morning coffee and take cayenne and cinnamon supplements at the maximum recommended dose. The April 22 numbers were ldl 43, Tri 32, HDL 64!! This compares with 66, 67, and 43 respectively in December. Still on the niacin and fish oil in high doses...
523927 tn?1257018704 I have a suggestion based on experience with my patients in using red yeast rice and niacin combination for raising HDL and reducing LDL. This combination has been effective for a number of my patients. Ask your physician before you try anything, especially when you are taking other meds/nutritional supplements since there are common interactions.
Avatar f tn * Eat fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon. * Consider medications if diet and lifestyle changes don't help. Weight loss from diet changes and exercise are the first steps. Supplemental niacin or high-dose fish oil are often effective. Best wishes ...
519736 tn?1253986826 Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep. he has missed the last 2 days of work.
Avatar f tn Evidence from several studies has suggested that amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), lowers blood pressure slightly, as well as reduces the risk of death, heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known heart disease. However, high doses may have harmful effects, such as an increased risk of bleeding.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar m tn If you want to lower your triglycerides, try taking Carlson Lemon Flavored Fish oil, a tablespoon twice a day, this will help to lower it, and is also good for any inflammation in the veins and arteries. Also, try Niacin, this has been known to help too. Kamy, I do not know what 2.05 would be if converted, I am used to seeing it the other way.
1135275 tn?1586565652 i guess an even bigger question is what exactly is the difference between niacin in a capsule and niacin delivered via food? or is there any at all?
Avatar f tn Hi all. I am new here and hoping someone could help me out. I'm a young student who lives an active lifestyle. I am in the hospital working up and down various units throughout the week, I eat healthy on a 60/40-70/30 basis, and I am in the gym at least 3 days a week but usually 5(cardio and weight training). I recently got my cholesterol levels tested and discovered that I have very low HDL levels.
Avatar n tn Have you tried taking Niacin and Omega 3 Fish Oils? These can help those numbers.
Avatar m tn But in the past few years, taking simvistatin and a few others, it has been a mood/anger issue. My wife complains, telling me I'm pain to live with, I argue all the time, go off at the slightest thing. And I have to admit, I can feel it too. In doing things around the house, if I run into a difficult task, I get aggravated and frustrated very quick. I've taken CoQ10 to offset the effects, but it doesn't do enough. So it seems I have an issue with every statin I've taken .
Avatar f tn One after each meal and when you start going diahrea just cut back down to 2 or 1 tablet per day. Next add Niacin and fish pills and WALK because walking, niacin, and magnesium have cured my Proctitis. And Proctitis is the same as Chrons in the rectal area.. Magnesium and Niacin are like wonder drugs when it comes to IBD. Just give them 6 months and a year to really start enjoying life again. Check this from Merck on Niacin DEFICIENCY and GI tract in Chrons and UC I guess.....
Avatar n tn t eat fast food to get my HDL up, a small increase in HDL will lead to a much larger increase in LDL. There are better ways to increase your HDL. The best way is exercise, regular exercise, min of 30 mins per day 7 days a week, will raise your HDL. You can also look at Niacin,it is also used to raise HDL but please check with your doctor, first. You need to understand the role HDL plays. HDL binds with LDL to remove it from your blood and keep it from accumulating in your arteries.
Avatar n tn Immediately see a podiatrist at the slightest infection. And see a podiatrist regularly, in any event. 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oils and a slow-release niacin tablet once a day will help with microcirculation. Take special care to insure your hba1c is within normal limits. Alpha-lipoic acid supplements have been anecdotally recommended to assist in stopping nerve damage. From the standpoint of the literature, the jury is out.
Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
Avatar m tn I am not overweight or unhealthy, but I do have mild anxiety and depression at times. I do believe in the power of nutrition. My question is: I am currently taking a multivitamin, 1200mg fish oil, 1000 IU vitamin D3 and 500mg Vitamin B3 (Niacin) every morning. I follow that with a homemade smoothie that I make that consists of apples, oranges, baby spinach, wheat grass, kiwi, banana and a teaspoon of Earth Rise brand Spirulina mixed in.
Avatar n tn Try Niacin to raise your HDL and keep your trigs nice and low. Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers.
