Avatar m tn Omega 6 fatty acids have the effect of raising LDL levels in the blood. Look for eggs that boast high Omega 3 content. Also, foods high in solubls fiber, as well as insoluble fiber redude blood cholesterol levels by binding with cholesterol in digestion and ushering it out of the body. Oatmeal or high fiber cereals every morning for a few months will have a profound effect.
1202943 tn?1347840652 I had 3 more episodes of flushing that were WAY less severe In the following days. It always happens and hour or two after eating and I can feel my body heating up. Then I get the splotchy neck . I do take a Super B complex vitamin all most everyday. Maybe I am getting enough in my diet already and should quit taking this. On two of the days it happened I had steamed asparagus and Brocolli, which are maybe high in B3. The other day I had a salad with greens and a bunch of vegi's.
Avatar n tn Extended release niacin is arguably just as good as any drug on the market in terms of HDL and LDL effect. It can be tough on the liver but if you have normal liver function then its a legit alternative to statins (my father in law's cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years).
Avatar f tn ve been taking 250 mg of Niacin. Based on the previous TSH told me to decrease to 150. The last dosage said to decrease to 125 mcg. Is this weird?
Avatar m tn A note about raw eggs: many people in North America have been conditioned to believe that eating raw eggs is dangerous because of the potential of being infected with salmonella. According to a recent study by the United States Department of Agriculture, only one in every 30,000 eggs is contaminated with salmonella. Although there are no statistics that tell us what the percentage is for organic eggs, you can believe that it is far lower.
1370272 tn?1278353652 Can anyone help me understand this?? I am tired of crying!!! I conceived in October twins naturally but the eggs where not mature so they stopped developing. They did an ultrasound and said the follicles where 15-16 and I produced three eggs naturally. HELP, CONFUSED! Whenever I speak to the office I can do nothing but cry. 479244 tn?1271563659 In an attempt and on the recommendation of my np, I am going to start taking B vitamins (liquid, under the tongue). I had heard that niacin was hard on the liver, when I mentioned this to her she said "I haven't heard that".... (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin.
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps you..but in layman's terms...niacin B3 is needed to create energy for metabolism. Are you having problems with weight gain or loss?

Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar f tn Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all. It IS in a lot of multi vitamins and in food we eat, you are already getting some niacin. https://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar m tn red skin and feeling hot, this is due to the increase in hdl that opens up vessels and this is actually good even if you may feel having red skin and feeling hotter is strange, no worries about this by the way you may also try ezetimibe since the recent news of entry interference on hbv and no sdies from this drug, while i d not try statins
Avatar f tn Niacin is very benefit for lowering cholesterol, but it can cause problems with other labs, especially liver profile. Blood work should be monitored when taking Niacin. That is why I questioned if your physician was aware; he/she should always be made aware of all medications you are taking. Just because they are over the counter does not mean you should not be monitored periodically and/or you won't have problems with them. In my opinmin, the Niacin is the culprit.
Avatar n tn I have had the annoying ear fluttering for many years, and my regular doctors have been clueless. Finally I may go to an ENT, but I did some research on line and found this: http://www.emedicine.com/ent/TOPIC235.HTM My fluttering seems to be a type of muscular tinnitus, perhaps caused by deterioration of some nerves in the area after some type of injury and/or muscle spasm. What to do?

Avatar n tn Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. Niacin is usually prescribed for increasing the levels of HDL or the good cholesterol. It helps in protecting against the effects of atherosclerosis. It is available in many forms, fast acting and long lasting, over the counter and prescribed. There is a known incidence of facial flush with high doses. It could also cause headaches, dizziness and raised blood sugar. It is therefore prudent to take it under a physician’s prescription and supervision.
1063764 tn?1272821064 t want to end up taking too many vitamins. I also take calcium with vitamin D in it. The niacin supplements I bought say they are "flush" free. Also what is the best time to take them? I've read that they can make you tired. Thanks for any help.
1495437 tn?1288798915 Your body is known to hypersensitive to Niacin. Flushing, hypotension is known adverse effect of niacin in some individuals. The spectrum of these reactions can vary widely; reactions may present as typical allergic symptoms (eg, itching, urticaria, rash, edema) after a single dose, or may manifest as severe idiosyncratic dermatologic reaction. As for marks are concerned, Hydroquinone cream against prescription plus sun protection can lighten existing lesions.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I take 50 mg. Trrazodone, for sleep. My only other medication is Maxzide. I am not intentionally taking a lot of niacin. My multi-vitamin lists 20 mg. As far as I know my diat does not include an unusually high amount of niacin. I do eat bran cereal and drink about 4 8-oz. glasses of milk a day.
Avatar f tn I want to take benadryl to orevent a niacin flush, but im worried the niacin wont work.
Avatar n tn m in my early twenties and workout, a couple months ago I took a vasodilator supplement which later I found contained nicotinic acid(essentially niacin I think) in a high dose. I felt what it's called a niacin flush, tingling and warm feeling all over.. I did my workout and after went to take a shower, that's when I noticed a big red patch in my left foot and two small ones on my right foot.
Avatar n tn Also, thanks for letting me know about the niacin side effect. I was unaware. I will say though that the numbness happened almost immediately after I ate the chips and that's been a pattern in the past whether it's chips or hamburgers. I took the niacin about 6-8 hours before the numbness happened and I've been on a daily regimen for maybe 6 months and I haven't seen a correlation in the past.
Avatar m tn For a good multi-vitamin, I consider the minimum to be at least 25 milligrams of each of the main Bs (B-1, B-2, B-6, e.g.). I also consider more to be better as far as the water-soluble vitamins go (the Bs, vitamin C, and some others are water-soluble, while A, D, E, and K are fat soluble). 'Bear in mind that the RDI (recommended daily intake), DV (daily value), or whatever, is calculated to be the dose that keeps you from overtly DYING of a nutrient deficiency.
