Niacin is mostly for cholesterol and the heart and blood pressure, while folic acid is essential to proper nervous system functioning, and is in a balance with B6 and B12, which are especially important for mood regulation, to control homocysteine which in overabundance causes inflammation in the blood vessels.
Avatar n tn Believe it or not, I am taking 5 Niacin tablets in the morning and 5 at night for high trigylcerides. I can't remember the strength, but this is what is oredered by my doctor. In addition to that of course I have to take a statin and Tricor. Good news is that Tricor will have a generic out in May. I was also told by my pharmicist that Plavix has a generic coming out in July. Ask your pharmicist if there is a generic of Niaspan due out any time soon.
1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin is toxic in too high a dose. Niacinamide isn't, and so that's usually used for mental health purposes, but it doesn't yield a lot of niacin. Niacin will also give you a hot flush on your skin, unless you buy a non-flush niacin, which is usually, again, niacinamide. Niacin is usually used for the heart.
Avatar n tn I just received the results of the Berkley Heart Profile. My father died of CAD at the age of 46. My mother had a coronary artery blockage that was repaired at age 75. I'm a 54 yr. old healthy female non smoker, low BP, 5'5''/128 lb.and live a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet). My Lp(a) was 114, very high and a fibrinogen of 475. I also see that the LDL particles are primarily large. I plan on a stress test and obtaining a good cardiologist.
Avatar n tn The flushing makes your skin red in color and sometimes warm to the touch. Sometimes, taking an aspirin before taking the niacin can prevent the flushing. Don't do this without discussing it with your doctor. Drinking hot drinks or alcohol can also increase the flushing, so it is best to avoid these when taking the niacin. Also, niacin should not be taken with certain drugs.
Avatar m tn Niacin therapy should be initiated in patients with low HDL levels (less than 40 mg/dL for men and less than 50 mg/dL for women), particularly if other risk factors are present. Niacin is among the most effective agents known for correcting the multiple causes of heart and vascular disease, and has been shown to greatly diminish the risk of heart attack. Niacin is very safe and easy to use, if used properly.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar m tn Could the 34mg reading be the result of the substantial LDL decrease? For the past 20+ years my triglycerides have been in the 160-200mg range. The sudden decrease to 29 and 36mg seems strange, (to me,).
Avatar n tn and his book I believe was a God send. I take 10 mg lipitor my Dr says not for the cholesterol lowering but for the anti imflamitory benefits, because my t/ cholesterol is 142 ldl 71, hdl 57, tryg/ 68. God Bless, Brian.

Avatar n tn (I know it sounds strange, but many people are realizing the health benefits of yoga poses, especially those where the heart is positioned higher than the head.) One site I read said that surgery to cut a certain tendon near the ear was the way to relieve the fluttering, but this sounds pretty extreme. I'm going to try the natural route!
Avatar f tn Is it safe for me to take Centrum Cardio Vitamins (with plant phytols) to help lower my cholesterol? Also, does buffered niacin (or non-flushing niacin) work equally as well as regular niacin in helping to lower cholesterol? And is it safe to take with coumadin?
Avatar n tn I tried Benadryl, and my doctor put me on Medrol dosepack, but still kept me on the Niacin. Even though the Niacin was discontinued weeks ago, I still have some of the same problems. Tests for allergy to peanuts and shellfish were negative. I ate a few shrimp yesterday and exercised, and woke up today with hives that are itching; I feel fatigued and my skin feels uncomfortable. Could the Niacin I took still be causing this or did the Niacin trigger something in my body?
Avatar n tn i think your numbers are good . my trics were 562, but now 137 on meds total chol ws 134, i tried the niacin it was ok for two weeks than one night it made me have a cardio attack and pass out not all can take it and if you do always tke a aspirn before you take it .

214864 tn?1229715239 I read on one of the posts where some people have had great success by taking niacin for hypercholestermia.....has your doctor ever mentioned that?
Avatar n tn p.s. Here's an abstract on the paper, search on some of the info in the abstract and you will find it. November 3, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Dr Justin MS Lee (University of Oxford, UK) and colleagues report that 2 g of modified-release nicotinic acid (Niaspan, Abbott Laboratories) daily, on top of statins, resulted in a 1.64 mm2 reduction in carotid wall area on MRI, compared with placebo, in patients with vascular disease and low HDL.
Avatar f tn If it's already in the multivitamin and then I take more in an iron supplement, will that be too much?
Avatar n tn I have glaucoma which I have had under control for 15 years. Could the Niacor have any impact on my vision?
Avatar n tn Well, I stoped taking my Tricor and Zocor for a few months and my heart palps were gone. The problem is that my cholesterol numbers went back up. I started back on the statins and low and behold the palps returned. Anyone that has PVC's and PAC's knows how much of a nuisance they can be both physically and emotionally. Is there any other drug that is not in the same class as statins that works on cholesterol. I already eat oatmeal, take fish oil, etc. Thanks!
Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar n tn And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.
