niaspan

Avatar m tn My cardiologist has prescribed an increasing dosing regimen of colestipol granules to help lower my LDL level. Here are my last two most current labs from before I started the colestipol. I eat a lower fat diet, exercise by walking 40 minutes 5-6 times per week, don't smoke, control borderline hypertension with 5mg lisinopril daily, have a BMI of 30 but don't have enough self control to lose any weight.
Avatar n tn m on Niaspan because its one of the few treatments that can raise HDL while lowering LDL and increasing LDL particle size. If you are worried about CRP, the statins are really good at lowering this number, independently of what they do to your chol. numbers.
Avatar n tn Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
Avatar f tn Mayo Clinic published an article entitled "Fish Oil and Red Yeast Rice Studied for Lowering Blood Cholesterol" where a group of researchers from Pennsylvania examined whether an alternative approach to treating high blood cholesterol may provide an effective treatment option for patients who are unable or unwilling to take statins. The researchers noted that there was a reduction in LDL cholesterol levels in both groups. The alternative treatment group experienced a 42.
Avatar f tn I think exercise is great for everything but I would not count on it increasing HDL. I exercise vigorously every day and it did not change my HDL at all. Too much emphasis is placed on HDL and not enough on the Total and LDL. To protect your vascular health, you want to keep both your Total and LDL values low. According to the Pritiken "newsletter" which I subscribe to an article stated: "Focus on lowering your bad LDL cholesterol and don't worry about the HDL".
Avatar f tn Genetics plays a significant role in the levels of HDL and LDL in the blood and some medications and exercise programs can shift them one way or another. There is no magic remedy and for a very informative article on lowering LDL levels I suggest searching "lowering LDL levels" - you would locate an article on" theheath.usnews.com" web site containing an article on lowering LDL cholesterol.
Avatar n tn now he wants to try Crestor.....Are statins good for raising HDL?...If one can keep their LDL down low enough say under 80, is HDL still significant?....Except for HDL, my other numbers are good...I'm non-smoker, & ideal weight, & active..... Also, we sometimes do a cardio CRP test (most of the time it's just the lipid profile)....I've had about 6 crp tests done since 2003 - results have been typically been between .03 - .07......
1174225 tn?1269628721 HDL is the good stuff, increasing that is better for you than reducing the LDL. You can do that with flax seed oil, hemp seed oil, fish oil, eating cold water wild caught fish, flax seeds, and such. There are also many herbal remedies that might help in combination with dietary changes and an increase in exercise. Red yeast rice, for example, is a natural statin. Try searching the complementary medicine forum archives and see if there aren't some discussions of this.
Avatar m tn 13% of patients with viral clearance had increased LDL and 33% experienced increases in cholesterol to levels warranting lipid lowering therapy. Conclusion: Hepatitis C is associated with decreased cholesterol and LDL levels. This hypolipidemia resolves with successful hepatitis C treatment but persists in nonresponders. A significant portion of successfully treated patients experience LDL and cholesterol rebound to levels associated with increased coronary disease risk.
Avatar f tn just too much for my sensitive system I guess...but they told me to not try Niacin again. It was more (embarassing for ME) and FUNNY for everyone else!! I still get teased about it!!!
1323747 tn?1364806882 of niacin for high cholesterol this per two different doctors. Since I started recently on Armour I am noticing lots of bruising...some the size of a fifty cent piece. They seem spontaneous. I have about 12 right now but not all are that size. When I mentioned the bruising to the nurse at my doctors office she dismissed it saying she bruises easy too. ?? Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried lowering the aspirin to 162 mg.
Avatar f tn Carbohydrates and protein give us energy, but the body will convert any unused carbohydrates to Triglycerides. This is why exercise is good for lowering trigs, along with a good diet. So remember, a low fat diet, but high in carbs, will still increase trigs. I watched a very good documentary recently on calories and the amount of food the body actually requires is a lot less than we imagine. Nearly everyone has an appetite far exceeding their daily needs.
5536886 tn?1455827346 These are not new findings, it has been widely known that HDL particles created with Niacin are larger, less dense particles that do not bind with LDL as well as naturally created HDL particles. The best way to create natural HDL is still with exercise.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
Avatar n tn Salmon, dark chocolate raise HDL levels. Look for Omega 3 in your foods. For men the HDL is lower than for women. You should try to get your HDL at least in the thirties if not higher. You can ask your doctor about fish oil also. A good multi-B vitamin is good for the heart and nervous system.
Avatar m tn valve replacement 2001, redid bypasses. I was on 40mg Lipitor and 500mg no-flush niacin for a number of years with moderate sucess. I subscribe to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Newsletter. In the July 2007 issue there was suggestion that 1,500mg niacin was a good statin supplement. Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have recently heard that Niacin is good for lowering cholesterol. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar m tn Niacin is a good start, however on average it only reduces LDL by approx 10% which will still leave the OP with a very high level of LDL, still well above AHA recommendations. I don't think Niacin (B3) alone will do it. Just my 2 cents............
Avatar n tn Keep it under 85%, no additional benefit for pushing that hard. You can also ask your doctor about Niacin which is also a supplement and will help increase HDL.
Avatar m tn You can consume alcohol and spicy foods apart from your use of niacinfor example, having a glass of wine at 7 p.m. and then taking niacin at 9 p.m. Only a few people will have more flushing due to the combination.
