Niacin and plaque

Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and plaque

niaspan

Avatar n tn Is a EBCT the scan what you are taking about and does it show all plaque or only calcified plaque? Can soft plaque cause a blockage as well?
Avatar n tn I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.
Avatar n tn It has this ability apparently because it removes the excess not used by cells and in the brain. It also went on to explain how plaque can also be removed naturally by the body using certain molecules made to control calcium levels for bone growth/repair. The calcium in the plaque can be broken down and the remaining substances such as damaged red/white blood cells etc can be filtered out safely.
564698 tn?1245986690 There is severe amount of calcium and calicified plaque in the ostium of the LAD and appears to involve the distal left main, moderatre to severe degree. Following this there is an area of non-calcified with a severe stenosis with almost sensation of contrast in the proximal LAD. This is non-calcified p;aque. In the mid LAD is a very smal vessel and is diffusely diseased as well. The distal LAD appears to be relatively free of significant disease.
Avatar n tn Try Niacin to raise your HDL and keep your trigs nice and low. Nuts would also help but Niacin for sure can improve that number..otherwise you have good numbers. I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers.
Avatar n tn I understand that plaque is mainly calcium and can perhaps see that this could be broken down by chelation. Chelation is actually a process already existing in the body, but they increase it. Now, if you remove the calcium based plaque, that leaves a lot of pure fat underlying it. Chelation will never remove the fat, nothing will. The plaque forms in the first place to try and trap the fat against the artery, preventing it from bursting free and clotting smaller arteries.
Avatar f tn But my best lipid results ( raising HDL, lowering LDL and Lp(a) ) came from taking RX Niacin which I take with the 10 mg Crestor and 325 mg aspirin at bedtime. No problems with Niacin either.I take RX fish oil also as I am in big time prevention mode due to cardiac microvascular dysfunction.Fortunately my lipids have never been bad and my larger coronaries are clear but the lipids are only a piece of the total cardiac picture and the possible side effects of meds far outweigh my other risks.
Avatar m tn A 6-month prospective observational study was conducted with 84 CAD patients receiving pravastatin treatment in order to evaluate the relationship between lifestyle modification, in particular aerobic exercise, and plaque volume as assessed by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Lifestyle during the study period was assessed by the-lifestyle modification score. A significant decrease in plaque volume by 12.9% was observed after 6 months of pravastatin therapy (P<0.0001 vs baseline).
Avatar m tn At the moment, there is no way to reduce plaque in the arteries, and there is still a lot to be learned about the chemical processes which cause it. There has been one recent new line of thought which does look interesting. What research has looked at is the gulo gene, which is switched off in humans/apes. This means we have no ability to synthesize our own vitamin C and rely totally on consumption.
Avatar f tn Plaque assessment can be done by CT scan angioplaty (images of the anatomy of heart coronary vessels for soft plaque (between the linings of the vessel) and hard plaque that resides in the heart channel that can reduce the flow of blood. Then there is a cath angioplasty and that entails running an instrument through a vessel and into the heart to exam whether there is any plaque blockage. Procedures usually are done if the patient is having chest pains that are believe to be vascular blockage.
Avatar m tn Totally blocked right coronary artery, some abnormalties in the LAD, a 90% occlusion at the start of the circumflex and later a ruptured plaque in my left main. I consulted with a surgeon after my first failed attempt at angioplasty and decided that I just didn't feel that bad. I read some research going on at the time where the progression of coronary artery disease was being stopped and even regressed with the newish statins when combined with other drugs.
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..
Avatar f tn Keep in mind what role HDL plays, it binds with the LDL or bad cholesterol and takes it back to the liver to be eliminated or recycled. Your LDL level is very low and near optimal. The less LDL in your system, the less HDL you need. The best way to increase HDL is exercise, but only after you have discussed it with your doctor. To have an effect on HDL, you really need between 30 - 60 mins a day at 75% of your max predicted heart rate (220-age) most days of the week.
718651 tn?1237042917 ve read, played, physically took care of elderly people bathing and all,, and helped make and serve dinner, then i layed on the ground which i haven't done in years and talked to my husband while he cleaned the kitchen,, another thing i haven't done in forever,, i don't know what is wrong but emotionally i feel better than i have in a long time i'm in better spirits and i'm more active... if niacin helped in any of that i would try it...
479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar n tn She has been taking Asprin and Niacin since. It appears that the left side is okay as the doctors have not given her a percent of blockage for that side. She is now 70 to 80% on the right. I was wondering how well Angioprim, oral Chelations or things like that work. I imagine that she is too far along for this? or maybe not if she has other areas that have minimal blockage?
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
Avatar m tn Call it mind over matter or whatever but I started taking Niacin and inositol last week. I have felt a steady improvement in my mood and anxiety levels each day. I have been taking a B Complex, 100 mg everyday for the past 2 months. The Niacin I take is 400 mg so that is a 500 mg/day dose. Yesterday I bumped up to 400 mg in the AM and 400 at night. There is definely an improvement that I feel. i am not 100% yet but I feel better than I did a week ago.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar f tn The significance of high score is the risk of rupture of the soft plaque into the blood flow channel and cause a heart attack. The score may represent degree of plaque in the left anterior artery Left main artery with 20-30% narrowing with hard plaque is not considered significant asnd should not be any problem. When the vessel is narrowed to 70% or higher, there could be chest pain and therapy would be necessary. The non-calicified is soft plaque between the vessel lining.
Avatar n tn using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar m tn 3 oz, 7.8 mg Daily Value: 49% Just under 50 percent of the day’s niacin in a three-ounce serving. Tuna Packed in Water, Niacin Content: 3 oz, 8.6 mg Daily Value: 54% Canned tuna is the best source of niacin, and it’s packed with docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 that stunts the growth of belly fat cell. Canned chunk tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” enjoy two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. I don't trust the FDA!
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
