Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and lipids

niaspan

Avatar m tn Does it distinguish between good and bad HDL? Is itpossible to do so? What about niacin?. For that matter what about the claimed champion HDL-raiser aerobic excercise.?
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
Avatar m tn There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life. After a bad diet, hypothyroidism is the second most common cause of elevated cholesterol. Genetics is under 1% of cases. It's worth trying out some natural methods first. Statins have a list of side effects a mile long. *** "...
Avatar f tn But my best lipid results ( raising HDL, lowering LDL and Lp(a) ) came from taking RX Niacin which I take with the 10 mg Crestor and 325 mg aspirin at bedtime. No problems with Niacin either.I take RX fish oil also as I am in big time prevention mode due to cardiac microvascular dysfunction.Fortunately my lipids have never been bad and my larger coronaries are clear but the lipids are only a piece of the total cardiac picture and the possible side effects of meds far outweigh my other risks.
Avatar m tn Yeah, I'm usually fairly active - like to play a bunch. With winter here I do some weights 4x's a wk and cardio 2x's, although recently there have been some weeks where I've only felt up to putting 4 workouts a week in. Also, I'm a huge believer in olive oil, and doctors says that I have "good genes." My husband's cholesterol has to be monitored and we have him on niacin.
Avatar m tn I would work to improve your numbers through life style changes at this point. Your concerns should be increasing your HDL which you can do through exercise, diet and using supplements such as Omega 3's and Niacin. Your Tri's are also high but can be brought in line by cutting empty carbs like breads, pastas sugars. If this fails I would consider a statin as you have a family history of heart disease in your family. Also, did you mean that your fasting blood sugars were over 200?
Avatar n tn He even stopped taking a multi vitamin and stopped using a shampoo that contains niacin because he saw a site on line that some people have a high sensitivity to niacin and it might be cause for the elevated enzymes. As you can see, CalGal, we're reaching for any insight someone out there might have. Again, thank you for your input.
1375932 tn?1279301132 I take an array of meds (Coreg, Nitro, Nitro-Quick, Pravastatin, Niacin, Fish Oil and Vit D and small dose Xanax. Lipids are good overall, but HDL could be higher and 1000 Slo-Niacin has not pushed down LP(a). Possibly adding Diltiazem and have recently read about Eplenerone which I understand suppresses cortisol/physiological stress response. I have breakthrough pain almost daily, particularly with emotion - I have always had an exaggerated physical stress response.
Avatar n tn High cholesterol runs in my family so even with diet and exercise my numbers are still a little high. I started getting heart palpitations a few years ago and after a lot of testing was told they were harmless PVC's/PAC's. Well, I stoped taking my Tricor and Zocor for a few months and my heart palps were gone. The problem is that my cholesterol numbers went back up. I started back on the statins and low and behold the palps returned.
Avatar m tn 24 this is extremely dangerous because all diseases can coem from it like erterosclerosis, fatty liver, diabetes and similar lipids unbalance diseases.
Avatar m tn I was told to avoid niacin, excess vitamin C, along with marijuana and alcohol by my liver clinic. Risk and the way liver handles excess niacin outweighed benefit though certainly getting adequate amounts by use of a NO iron multiple vitamin would be fine. Statins have so many contraindications they will probably never pass muster for liver patients.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
Avatar m tn s list, with Hypercholesterolemia is treated with Niacin and Fenofibrates to lower the trigylcerides. I have this problem and take a fenofibrate (Tricor) and a statin.
Avatar f tn You wouldn't be posting if you were not concerned. Smoking has to stop. It has a direct relationship on your entire vascular system, including your best pump, your heart and affecting the tiny microvessels in your heart muscle. Your lipid ( cholesterol) numbers and being a women can change your profile....you need to decrease your risk by managing your lipids and controlling glucose which indicates some disturbance in carb metabolism. As for your doctor saying you're healthy????
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..

479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar n tn Cholesterol is usually targeted from two angles, firstly by diet and secondly by limiting the Livers ability to manufacture the lipids. I think I read somewhere that Statins actually reduce the manufacture of ALL lipids, not just LDL, but HDL too. However, there is a third targeting method which is to reduce the absorbtion of fats through the gut. Although diet only accounts for around 25% of cholesterol in the blood, this is still a significant amount.
225237 tn?1333138999 These are your lipid counts and lipids are basically transports which carry fats around in your blood stream for the body to use. Whether the results are good, depends if you have heart disease. If you don't have heart disease, then your levels are absolutely fine. If you are at risk of heart disease (family history etc) then they are a tiny bit high, but really not much. If you have heart disease then you need to alter your diet and try to drive the LDL/TRI down and the HDL up.
