Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and glucose

niaspan

Avatar n tn using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar m tn Thanks Stef. Gone ahead and ordered bitter lemon and niacin. Start taking these right away. Will also test for pth and vitd3oh. Share results with u. Grateful for ur advise as always Stef.
Avatar n tn HDL can only be readily raised by losing weight, controling diabetes or prediabetes, or by taking niacin. Avoiding execessive carbohydrates even in people with normal glucose control may be helpful as well. How much fish oil can I safely take? Look at the AHA website. They give recommendations as to intake of fish oil. The amount is gaged by adding the mgs of EPA + DHA. Niacin........how much can I safely take of that without having to get liver test done by my doctor so often.
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..

479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
12802766 tn?1427764870 I am currently on 400 milligrams of Lyrica per day because ihave pins and needles my hands and foot that drive me crazy. doctor said my vitamin B levels are five times the normal and he thinks this is causing the pins and needles. I don't see him until May. in the meantime the Lyrica only touches the surface of the pain. Does anyone have any suggestions for relief of the pain? Does anyone know how to get rid of vitamin B in your body?

475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
Avatar m tn I'm afraid I can't answer why your fasting level was so high. I can say that the fasting test shows your glucose level at one moment in time. Your A1c tells you what your average glucose levels were over the past 3 months so since that was normal, that's a good sign. There are many reasons that blood sugar could be high and stress is one of them. Also certain medications and supplements such as niacin and steroids can raise your blood sugar.
Avatar f tn You wouldn't be posting if you were not concerned. Smoking has to stop. It has a direct relationship on your entire vascular system, including your best pump, your heart and affecting the tiny microvessels in your heart muscle. Your lipid ( cholesterol) numbers and being a women can change your profile....you need to decrease your risk by managing your lipids and controlling glucose which indicates some disturbance in carb metabolism. As for your doctor saying you're healthy????
Avatar m tn Call it mind over matter or whatever but I started taking Niacin and inositol last week. I have felt a steady improvement in my mood and anxiety levels each day. I have been taking a B Complex, 100 mg everyday for the past 2 months. The Niacin I take is 400 mg so that is a 500 mg/day dose. Yesterday I bumped up to 400 mg in the AM and 400 at night. There is definely an improvement that I feel. i am not 100% yet but I feel better than I did a week ago.
Avatar n tn Some cancers, like lymphoma, hormone disorders like carcinoid syndrome and hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and some neurologic conditions like strokes, autonomic neuropathy, and post-traumatic syringomyelia can also cause night sweats. Medications like aspirin, acetaminophen, niacin, tamoxifen, Viagra and antidepressants are often linked to night sweats.
Avatar f tn Niacin in most people causes the face to flush/blush. No flush Niacin is readily available OTC. A word of caution, however, Niacin is a B3 and B3's are known to elevate blood sugars. Test your bs often and on a regular basis.
Avatar m tn 3 oz, 7.8 mg Daily Value: 49% Just under 50 percent of the day’s niacin in a three-ounce serving. Tuna Packed in Water, Niacin Content: 3 oz, 8.6 mg Daily Value: 54% Canned tuna is the best source of niacin, and it’s packed with docosahexaenoic acid, a type of omega-3 that stunts the growth of belly fat cell. Canned chunk tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” enjoy two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. I don't trust the FDA!
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar m tn “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect. The correct dose of niacin depends on what abnormality you and your doctor are trying to correct. To raise HDL and correct small LDL, a dose of 750-1000 mg a day usually provides full benefit.
Avatar f tn So, make sure you run everything by your doctor and come up with a mutually agreed upon plan. Niacin HAS been used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion. And if you are on a cholesterol lowering medication already, it may have no effect at all.
Avatar f tn I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08. I do not have any symptoms. I just received the second blood draw for a possible job in Antarctica.
