Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.

My father was on both Coumadin and Aspirin, and still had clots. I think I got the bad Lipo a gene.

Ask your doctor. My view is NO! A pacemaker does nothing to stop AFib and the AFib is why Coumadin is being taken.

Duke University Medical Center recommended the target range of 3.0 to 3.5 for the St Jude Medical leaflet valve. I have been on it since 1993. would the coumadin and fish oil combined be the cause of this bleeding and can fish oil alone sustain my need to thin my blood for arrythmia? I am afraid to take the coumadin again. I've been off that and the fish oil since Oct. 17.

my mother in law is on coumadin and has arthritis in her knees and back. Can she take or use things like ginger,or glucosamine sulfate without affecting the coumadin?

if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..

1st one a coarctation of the aorta at age 2, 2nd a mitral and aortic valve replacement with mechanical valves and a sinus of valsalva aneurysm repair at 37. of light beer is an extremely minimal dose of alcohol, especially if you are only doing it occasionally. I am on coumadin and drink more alcohol than that without any problems. But talk to you doctor, as kenkeith says, because everyone is different.

My father in law is an alcoholic who has Atrial Fibrillation and is on coumadin. His cardiologist will not perform a cardioversion for him until his INR is within an acceptable level but it never is! The coumadin nurses frequently tell him his levels are too high and tell him to not take any coumadin for days at a time then the cardiologist tells him his INR is top low and they post pone the cardioversion.

I am preparing to have an ablation to correct my afib and they want me on coumadin to prepare for it and then after. My baseline INR was .9. Not sure what I need to do. Should I take the coumadin and just let the clinic monitor the INR readings?

We usually admit the patients 3 days prior to the surgery when we withhold coumadin and start heparin once the INR is less than 2.0. After surgery we usually start the heparin 12 hours after the surgery and coumadin shortly thereafter. The patient usually don't leave the hospital until their INR above 2.0. These are not hard and fast rules, and some physicians are more careful than others.

During those 2 years the migrains stopped. I was taken off the coumadin and now they have started up again. could the coumadin have helped me stay away from the migrains?

ve read, played, physically took care of elderly people bathing and all,, and helped make and serve dinner, then i layed on the ground which i haven't done in years and talked to my husband while he cleaned the kitchen,, another thing i haven't done in forever,, i don't know what is wrong but emotionally i feel better than i have in a long time i'm in better spirits and i'm more active... if niacin helped in any of that i would try it...

(uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.

I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.

I'm also an afib sufferer and have been on coumadin for 6 years and haven't experienced any excessive bleeding or bruising with it. I was pleasantly surprised with how little it changed my life. I generally undergo a PT/INR measurement every 4 to 6 weeks and there seems to be no problem maintaining an INR level between 2 and 3. I'm 67 and also run and exercise every day. I also eat salads, greens and vegetables daily and haven't had to limit my diet because of coumadin.

I don't want to do that because I am very active and I am petrified of bleeding out. when I went to my accupuncturist she said she believes it is happening because of the sympathetic nerve due to the stress I have been under. I also read where taking 40mg of vitaminB6 helps the arrhythmia. What are your thoughts on my situation.

She has really bad swelling in her legs, from the knees down, including her ankles and feet. Since her Coumadin dosage was doubled due to low INR levels about 6 months ago, the swelling has gotten worse. I understand that correlation is not causation, but is this common? Also, do they ever decrease one's dosage of blood thinners, or is it always the other way around.

I have 2 artificial heart valves and am taking coumadin (target INR 2.5 - 3.5). I am living overseas and have very limited access to fresh/frozen fish. To help regulate my INR, I do have a portable tester that works well. I'm wondering if the blood thinning effects of fish oil (if any) will be measured by my INR testing machine. In other words, will the total blood thinning effects of both coumadin and the fish oil suppliments be measured by the INR?

Incidently, the day my father was being discharged from the rehab nursing facility, staff drew him aside and said your wife just died. This just reinforces his desire to stay away from the Coumadin.
