Does anyone else take these types of meds to control their gerd and, ultimately, help with asthma? I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.
Since then I have been on various rounds of antibiotics, prednisone, cough syrups, singular, symbicort, albuterol etc. I had been treated at the allergy clinic years before for allergies and asthma. I have had to take about 8 days of 10mg prednisone about 4 -5 times in the last 8 months. It is about the only thing that helps my coughing and spitting up of phlegm.
Acid can even be aspirated and cause asthma like symptoms. Many people are miss diagnosed with asthma that really just have very bad acid reflux. When the acid reflux is controlled, their asthma goes away. The formal name for this type of asthma is laryngeal-pharyngeal reflux.
Good doctor too consider that possibility. I hope that the treatment works for you.
I went to the doctor and he recommended surgery (fundiplication) or take 1 nexium in am and i nexium in pm. Also, asthma is tied to GERD. I had a asthma test and I did have a mild case of asthma. I now take 2 nexium a day and 1/day Advair diskus. I now have no GERD. I am 5'5" and weigh 162lbs. I was told to lose 30 lbs and then my "valve" would start working again and I wouldn't need meds or surgery. OK I can lose the weight, but keep it off?
It sounds alot like asthma. I have a 14 year old son who since he's been three had the same exact problems. When he was two i took him to the Dr. and many times to the hospital and they kept telling that it was just a cold or stupid stuff like that and it wasn't. Finally I threw a fit and they found out he had asthma. He is doing very well now, but for years he had to be put on his machine and couldn't do anything physical.
I had no idea I even had reflux until right before the asthma showed up. They really go hand and hand and they are not good to have together because they make each other worse. I would keep taking the antacids. Maybe try Prilosec OTC till you can see a gastroenterologist, with Mylanta in between after meals etc. Then of course follow all the lifestyle changes.
s, I have been placed on Atenolol which has been increased to 50 mg QAM and 25 QHS, I have been placed on zantac 150 mg BID and nexium 40 mg BID (have been on Nexium for about 10 days). PVC's are almost totally gone but the chest pressure is there daily from approx. 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. The only relief that I get from the chest pressure is to lie on my stomach (weird right). When my doc put me on nexium I felt great for about 4 days, the pressure came back and is still with me today.
I am very pleased to hear of the success some of you have had with Prevacid in the use of asthma control. I have an 11-year-old son who was diagnosed with asthma and it is "out of control" we could never find a reason for the onset of an attack and finally we consulted a pulmonary specialist. The Dr. prescribed prevacid and I am hoping that he has the success you have had. I only wish we had known this sooner.
It is related to both asthma and sleep apnea. Prednisone should help with asthma symptoms and GERD can give you the exact same symptoms (I'm proof of that - wheezing, lowered peak flows, positive lung function tests, coughing).
The best test for this is 24 pH monitoring or impedance testing - it measures the reflux over a 24 hour period to diagnose.
can treating GERD with nexium really help sleep apnea and asthma? my ENT thought so and I've read that GERD can even cause sleep apnea, central apnea somehow??

The ENT said he saw nothing and gave me a prescription for Nexium 40 mg 2x daily. Around this time I also switched to Claritin-D and began using a neti pot. I had an upper endoscopy: nothing there. Since then the feeling of the lump is better and the nausea has stopped. I don't vomit anymore or feel the need to gag.
Sorry,I have Asthma as well.Singulair,is the best med for this,as your doctor about this,it is to be taken in the evening only.Advair,every 12 hours will also help with inflammation in your lungs.After you use all inhalers,rinse and gargle with water,that also causes throat irritation.Cindy is right,Nexium is great,Aciphex works pretty well to.Good Luck and of course ask your Doc or Pharmacist about possible drug interactions.
So when she would see fron the peaks it was not asthma then she was able to relax and realize it was GERD and would be ok but still be in GERD symptoms.
Sounds like bad esohagitis is going on (not a Dr., just aot of exp. here) and that is why the lump! Terrible feeling. So sorry you have it.
Ask your Dr. if you can take CARAFATE to help heal this esophagitis ... it is RAW inside most likely and even though you have the Nexium the gerd coming up is still coming up ..
I was diagnosed with acid reflux six years ago and after trying Nexium and everything else, I have been taking Omeprazole (Prilosec) twice a day for about 4 years. I've also made ALL of the dietary changes doctors have recommended. I don't smoke or drink, I sleep on a very expensive adjustable bed. Yet... it's obvious that the acid is not under control because when I eat, I get asthma! Now, I've had asthma since I was six, but it would only flare up after a bad cold.

I ran the Chicago Marathon in October, and by late November was having exercise-induced asthma, burning lungs, burning throat, and tightness in my chest. Inhalers all but solved the asthma component. But the burning still persists. I too had a barium test, which proved negative for GERD. My voice is often very hoarse. I have tons of post nasal drip, often tinged with blood. Also, I frequently have sinus headaches.
