1134609 tn?1269272200 However, a recent family even has gotten me wondering; would the Lamictal be a good enough mood stabilizer for me alone? My mother was on Celexa for depression and Topama for seizures, but was taken off of the Celexa because it was causing her problems. She's been free and clear of the Celexa for 3 months and is only on the Topamax and she hasn't had any issues since. In fact, she's the most stable she's been in a long time.
1134609 tn?1269272200 Lamictal and Neurontin actually are mood stabilizers. Klonopin is an anti-anxiety medication used as a mood stabilizer. Clinically in general the most effective mood stabilizer is lithium but each person reacts differently to each medication. Seroquel causing mania is rare. My experience with mood stabilizers was different from yours because I responded very well to Lamictal and Seroquel (which is an antipsychotic used as a mood stabilizer).
1134609 tn?1269272200 I am on 1600mgs of Neurontin (400mgs a day) and it has been working as a good mood stabilizer for me. In fact, we realized that the issues I was having in March were related to bouncing around on that dosage. I was given 1200mgs a day (mandatory) and 400mgs to take as needed to sleep. When I quit chewing I stopped taking the extra dose because I felt that I didn't need it; then I started cycling with the sun again.
1255505 tn?1272819115 is that lithium is the only medication that was first researched and developed as a primary mood stabilizer. Every other mood stabilizer was developed as another medication and used off label as a mood stabilizer and then only FDA approved for that purpose afterwards. They are finding that the anti-convulsant used for my physical disability is showing mood stabilization properties and they may potentially document that.
Avatar m tn I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason. The mood stabilizer I take now Clonidine is rarely used because it can cause depression and its a blood pressure medication in its original use with the potential of some severe side effects. I don't believe the medication Lovaza requires blood tests but like the rest of the mood stabilizers that would be listed its use as a mood stabilizer is experimental.
2033870 tn?1329481339 I have rapid cycling bipolar as well as post traumatic stress disorder. He has me on Xanax for anxiety, Zoloft and Neurontin for mood stabilizer. Can anyone tell me what they think of Neurontin and if it words? I am very intrigued to know if I am on a good medicine or if this isn't good. I don't go back to him for 3 weeks.
299889 tn?1257339377 I have been on many different medications such as effexor, paxil, prestique and lastly pexeva. My doctor wants me to go on xanax plus a mood stabilizer pexeva which I have been on for 2 weeks. My anxiety is so bad I can't think straight and when I have tried to come off of a mood stabilizer before it has made me very ill. I know it is a big step, it is the only thing I haven't tried. I am 59 and need to get on my feet. Please give me opinions.
20822544 tn?1523771330 that med is used for chronic pain epilepsy TBI mood stabilizer and diabetic foot pain.
Avatar f tn But it was also marketed (illegally, according to the FDA) as a mood stabilizer, even though there are no good studies showing it is effective treatment for bipolar disorder. The company that makes the drug was hit with t large fine about ten years ago for taking docs to the Caribbean and giving them lectures and marketing pitches... the NY Times had some big article on it . I have always thought of gabapentin as a great drug... looking for something to treat.
1134609 tn?1269272200 So, I have been on ever increasing doses of Neurontin for years now; it's been my stand by as an anti-anxiety drug and a mood stabilizer (I'm BP2) However, it seems like I develop a tolerance to it pretty quickly and when I do so, each dose jacks up my anxiety level like you wouldn't believe. I got off of it a few years ago for that very reason.. My shrink and I want to use it as the primary 'downer' medication for me, but it's driving me nuts.
1252901 tn?1271131868 I would say that Lamictal is one of the best mood stabilizers out there, but everyone is different. It is a medication that used to treat depression so it needs to be used in conjunction with something that controls mania. It can throw people around if it's just being used on it's own. Lithium is a good medication to take along with it; don't use your boyfriend's experience as a gauge for how it will work for you. I, personally, take Neurontin with it and it works well.
Avatar f tn When you're dealing with ACs like Depakote and Neurontin, the weight gain can be attributed to the increase in appetite and not necessarily metabolic issue. I had a shrink that wouldn't give me Neurontin, even though it's a GREAT mood stabilizer for me because he felt the weight gain was going to be an issue. I am on a good size dose of it now and have actually lost 60lbs. It does boost my appetite, but I just adhere to the 'put the fork down' diet.
Avatar f tn t do much for depression. Lithium is a mood stabilizer. You might find you need a combination of medication to help not just one medication. for me it is Lithium, Quetiapine and Olanzapine. Olanzapine causes massive weight gain!
Avatar f tn I don't know. I remember taking it as a mood stabilizer for a while (it didn't work in that capacity but then again that's an off label use). I didn't have any severe side effects of concern, some dizziness, fatigue, nervousness and some minor nausea, all of which might have gone away in time if I had stayed on it longer.
1134609 tn?1269272200 That's a reasonable enough dose of Klonopin that withdrawal symptoms would be of concern if you titrated off it too fast but your psychiatrist's titration schedule seems reasonable. Klonopin is an anti-anxiety medication that can have some effect as a mood stabilizer as well. The more important thing is whether the Neurontin will work alone and if it doesn't there are other mood stabilizers that could be added to it. You should speak to your psychiatrist about it.
203342 tn?1328737207 A child psychiatrist put my 15 year old daughter on Zolof for depression and anxiety and Neurontin as a mood stabilizer. When I looked it up, it said it was used as a seizure medicine and sometimes for bipolar but hadn't really been tested much for that. She's never been officially diagnosed with bipolar. She does have angry outbursts a lot over things that shouldn't be that big of a deal. In other words, she overreacts a lot.
479459 tn?1246742019 thanks, I am on lamictal which I think may be similar to neurontin, not sure, but it is a mood stabilizer. Maybe I just need to wait this out...it's just so hard to function sometimes!
Avatar m tn Neurontin is used off label as a mood stabilizer, although by all reports it doesn't do a very good job at it, except for maybe a few rare people. Both of them get used off label for anxiety (I think it's Lyrica that's actually approved for anxiety in the UK, just not the US). That seems to work better overall.
Avatar f tn m a little apprehensive about starting ANOTHER med. I am on SO many already. I understand that Neurontin is a mood stabilizer by structure, and I am already on two of those - Lamictol for Bi-polar and Topomax for Migraines. So I don't understand why I have to be on yet ANOTHER pill. I'm already a walking pharmacy as it is. :( So has it helped anyone? I've read online that some people take it for migranes.
Avatar f tn The anti-convulsant agent I am taking for dystonic spasms that is showing much promise as a mood stabilizer is quite effective but as its a first time use I would not print its name. There were many mood stabilizers I tolerated for ten years or more such as Lamictal. Sometimes mood stabilizers work for a while and then have to be changed. That's a known phenomenon with anti-depressents that is sometimes true of mood stabilizers as well.
Avatar f tn It is not a mood stabilizer. It would be best to speak to his psychiatrist about this situation with him as there is a potential he has built up a tolerance to Xanax and more importantly if he has bipolar as determined by his psychiatrist he would need a full mood stabilizer. If he has anxiety disorder there are other medications for anxiety that are longer lasting that might be safer for him but that judgment is up to his psychiatrist as well.
Avatar f tn I have seen it prescribed for many things. I have seen it prescribed for people who were going through withdraws but it was mostly for headaches and other types of pain. I don't believe that the intent was to help with the withdraw symptoms and I really don't think that it would unless you have some sort of physical disablitity or debilitating pain that the drs know needs to be treated along with the w/ds. It is also prescribed for many other reasons to include a mood stabilizer.
2069525 tn?1331349398 Amy is right, you need a mood stabilizer, if you are going to take an antidepressant. That said if celexa works for you with out a mood stabilizer that is great. I completely get that the mood stabilizer can make you feel "dumb" and slows you down but maybe you could talk to your psychiatrist about a lower dose or something. Its important to work together with your doctor and you get what works for you. I didn't find Celexa helpful but i was on a low dose.
1116472 tn?1260075052 Lamictal is an effective mood stabilizer and one with the lease number of side effects except for a rash.If you get any rash inform your Doc immediately otherwise you dont need to get any blood tests on this med.
Avatar f tn The tentative plan is to add topamax after baby for the migraines and an added mood stabilizer boost. I am loving the possible side effect of weight loss as I am overweight, but I would be devastated if I lose my hair. I may have a migraine everday but they're not so bad I would hand over my hair for relief. Maybe I'll feel different if I can't hold my baby steady because I'm dizzy, but I'm not there yet. My question is have you experienced one or both of the side effects?
