Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin and its uses

neurontin

Avatar m tn Neurontin was originally prescribed for siezure, bi-polar, and convulsions. It has other off label uses now such as for pain and drug withdrawals. Just google it. I know on wikipedia it says on there what is was and is used for. It even mentions about being used off label for drug withdrawals. I hope this helps. If I can answer any more questions about it, let me know! I was totally amazed on how well it worked for me.
Avatar n tn ve never been prescribed neurontin for sleep (i was on it for just a BRIEF time years and years and years ago for headaches, but only took it briefly, for some reason, i was afraid of it at the time!)....anyway, just recently, my mom had some nerve issues and was prescribed neurontin....she's 71 and always has trouble sleeping....while she was on it (for a period of about a month or so), she said she slept like a baby, like she hadn't slept in YEARS!
7191139 tn?1389055599 First, antidepressants don't increase GABA in the brain. The don't work on GABA, they work on other neurotransmitters, and they don't even increase those, they just alter how the body uses them, so Abilify and ssris, for example don't target GABA. Benzos do target GABA, but don't necessarily increase it, again, they alter the way the body uses it mostly. GABA supplements don't generally cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually increase GABA either.
412194 tn?1233621532 I no longer blame myself for all the hurt and loss of my husband and daughter. I will try and get PO to let me relocate to the state he lives in and start my life here. Avatar f tn I took neurontin for a year and it was AMAZING for nerve pain. It also made me gain weight and soooo tired and also zombie like. When I decided to switch to Lyrica, my doctor had me do a taper off Neurontin and onto Lyrica to reduce risk of seizure. I have a lot more energy, my butt has gotten smaller ;-) and it is just as effective for nerve pain. You definitely want to taper off if you are going to stop though because of the seizure issue. I hope this helps and good luck!
Avatar n tn Neurontin is given and used specifically to treat nerve pain. The best example is that it is given for the shingles. I doubt you have nerve pain but I am not a doctor. You need to addequately have your pain treated. I disagree with the above poster stating no narcotics. You sound like someone who follows doctor's orders and uses medicine to have a better quality of life. A better thing for you to do is to post in the Pain Management forum.
Avatar m tn I know I'm late to the game here but have you tried propranol? my son uses it and he's 9 full blown adult migraines he's been on it for a year now and for the most part his are under control. unless his trigers it. one of his main trigers is heat. we have found that this works better then the elavil.
Avatar n tn Thanks so much for your response. Yes, I am on a bi-pap machine; however, the sleep apnea I think began well before I gained the weight, and I have read where it can actually cause weight gain (a chicken or the egg debacle). I woke up with headaches so bad I had to get up to take the pressure off my head against the pillow. That was 100 pounds ago. I thought it was just migraines, but always found that getting up and moving around cured the headache more often than not.
Avatar f tn He has not read the films yet but said he does NOT feel its my sinuses since my nose is never runny or stuffy, its always clear and I am a definite nose breather.. but its always severe headaches and more than headaches its facial pain. The only thing that really helps is ice and pressure on my face.. Last weekend it was so bad I threw up all day from it. He thinks is facial neuralgia stemming from TMJ and then gave me the neurontin. SO I dont know.
Avatar m tn First off if you can get to an ER, walk in clinic,or a free clinic if they have one in your area you walk in and tell them your trying to get off of neurontin but its been extremely hard.Tell them you have a friend that was also on neurontin and was given clonidine and that helped her to come off of neurontin without nearly as many problems. It may be better to go to a walk in clinic to get the pills instead of a patch so you will have them to take for a longer period.
Avatar f tn ill remember how I have felt these past couple wks and how I never want to feel this way again...I knw its hard believe me I do my stomach is still twisted. .I'm still not sleeping..but on the plus my legs don't hurt as bad seems like its only at night now when I try to relax....
700212 tn?1240760820 but I just started treatment also and I already take enough pills...but if its going to help I willtake it...My right leg has alot of nerve damage and deep scar tissue and it bothers me pretty bad...but for some reason they wont prescribe me pain meds that I can just take when Im in pain...they want me to take this one so I have to be on it all the time...I kinda feel like they think Im a drug addict or something and I want to yell at them....
Avatar f tn The STD counselor on a Herpes support site **********.*** said herpes doesn't live outside the body for long..and you can not catch it from inanimate objects in a VERY RARE case if someone with herpes uses a towel after the shower and rubs enough of the "virus" off and someone uses it immediately after there is a VERY slim chance of them getting is since the towel is still damp.. but that would be a very rare occurrence.
Avatar f tn the female on the other hand my friend is fostering her for me. but its a 30 minute drive and its just to far for me. every since they left i am having really bad depression, anxiety, and been just feeling at my all time low. i cannot even go outside because i start to cry and shake and feel like I'm going to pass out. i don't feel calm without them around. today i tried walking outside and i got really sick, i was sweating, shaking and had blurred vision and almost fell.
Avatar m tn then i would have to say give it a try, it is pricey, and sometimes insurance dosent always cover it, so if not covered by insurance, ask about neurontin, i take neurontin 600 mgs three times a day and it helps with my everyday pain quite well. lyrica and neurontin are in the same class of drugs and are not physically addictive.
Avatar f tn The Neurontin just makes me feel normal, I really am not craving a Percocet and that in itself is amazing. And since Neurontin is a nerve medicine, I thought I would be too sleepy but I don't feel anything at all on it, just normal. I know how horrible withdrawal is, I just couldn't face it without something to help and I just had to share this info with everyone out there suffering. Please let me know if it does help you.
Avatar f tn I was given some sample bottles to try, but after reading the possible side effects and the possible effects from stopping its use, I decided to try some other ways of dealing with my neuropathy.
Avatar f tn Well, I finally got my prescription filled and it is Neurontin. has anyone taken this?? I looked it up, but would love to hear from anyone who has taken it before I take it tonight. Reading about it kind of freaked me out....
1322901 tn?1274615330 Yah, let me know if you come up with that miracle drug too. For now, I am back on neurontin and take zanaflex for the night spasms. I think we need a cocktail of drugs to help with this issue and there is no one drug to get it under control. Let's see if other's have something to add.
Avatar f tn My psychiatrist is thinking about it for my anxiety, since nothing is working since a terrible and weird and untreated Paxil withdrawal four years ago. And to the poster, she says it's okay to take with klonopin, if that's any help, since I'm on klonopin and asked her about that.
1490607 tn?1288379690 Has any one heard of or experienced being on Cymbalta and/or Neurontin and where the side effects suddenly became MS like symptoms after being on them for a year?
1054417 tn?1273165866 Congrats! I agree about the neurontin. I was prescribed neurtontin for nerve pain and researched it. I read that it is used in some rehab facilities for withdrawal. I also had clonodine but didn't take it. The neurontin was enough to help me make it through. It is def. a drug that they need to look at more for withdrawal. It has so many off label uses. I didn't have rls once. I was even able to sleep and didn't have any of the twitchy muscles.
Avatar f tn It also numbs the nervous system slightly (as its used for nerve pain) which will reduce the anxiety and shakiness usually associated with withdrawals. (I have been prescribed Neurontin (gabapentin) for panic attacks in the past) And believe me- it will DEFINITELY give you a very slowed down sluggish sorta buzzed kinda feeling. As far as it COMPLETELY stopping withdrawal, that is unusual but not impossible.
Avatar f tn I am currently on my 2nd day clean and I am experiencing terrible anxiety, very restless legs, and nagging headaches. I have some 300mg Neurontin capsules which I have read may help with some of these symptoms. Does anyone have any experience with Neurontin(Gabapentin) for THC withdrawals? I realize that every person reacts differently to medications. I am just looking for some general information before I begin the Neurontin therapy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn That is what I call Tweeks, you get tweeked and more pain for about three days to a week. I was on Neurontin and actually have myofascial pain but they thought it may have been a nerve at first. The neurontin didn't do a thing for me. I was on 1200mg/day and it took me two months to get off of it because I got insomnia and had to take benedryl to get off of it and be able to sleep. It is low on side effects except feeling tired and dumb.
1207048 tn?1282174304 The problem many people have with Neurontin and meds like it is they start at two high a dose and increase too fast. That maximizes the sides effects and they stop it, when it might have worked wonders. Then it goes on their *bleep* list. Neurontin is not used for sleep unless the problem with sleep is with neuroapthic pain or paresthesias. We had a pain management doc visit us a while back and he wrote a couple Health Pages for us. You might be interested in both.
Avatar m tn It should with time if not there is Lyrica and Trileptal. Each person responds differently to medications. I could not do Neurontin especially at that dose. My GP thought they should have started me at a lower dose than the pain clinic tried. I was also on two other anti seizures. I am doing better with pain since i went to a private pain clinic which thinks out side the box. No more anti seizures and loopiness for me.
