Avatar m tn Fungal infection in toe nail needs long term treatment. The nail is the most difficult from where the fungus can be eradicated. You need take anti fungal tablet for at least 9-12 months. The entire nail plate takes 9-12 months to be replaced so you need to take this tablet for long time. No topical drugs only will be effective. Please talk to your physician for this. Wishing you good health.
Avatar n tn From my understanding one must use both an oral med along with a topical med if it is truly toenail fungus. I suffer from multiple skin cancers & have had 6 surgeries in 6 weeks with about a year more to go as I also have RA & thus a lousy healing & immune system.
Avatar f tn Hello, From the symptoms it looks like fungal nail infection or trauma skin. An infection of nail fungus occurs when fungi infect one or more of your nails. Nail fungus can be difficult to treat, and repeated infections are common. Over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments are available, but they aren't very effective. You need to get a KOH examination and fungal culture of the nail scrapings done and then oral antifungals prescribed.
Avatar m tn Onychomycosis does lead to onycholysis, painless separation of the nail from the nail bed. Topical treatment in most cases is enough but does take up to 6 months, while oral medication will only be prescribed under certain conditions. In terms of treatment you need to get your nails cut to stop the buildup of fibre and dirt. There is no treatment that will reattach the nail to the nail bed, just have to wait for a new nail to grow.
1430129 tn?1283281475 I have a nail fungus that I've dealt with for nearly two years. I have had my doctor prescribe cream, I also took Lamisil (spelling?) I went to the dermatologist with my son yesterday, and he told me to file the side of my nail with the fungus all the way down, he said in order to get rid of the fungus that's in my nail, I have to get rid of that part of my nail. Is this true? I also think I have a fungus on one of my toenails.
Avatar f tn I might be in the wrong forum as well but I was prescribed lamisil after a positive test for Onychomycosis on my toenails. I was told to take one tablet a day for 3 months. My doctor did check my liver before starting and he called to say everything was normal and to go forth with the treatment. I've heard so many bad things from hair loss, death, loss of taste and I'm so scared.
Avatar m tn I hit my big toenail many years ago twice in a row and it got yellow from the tip of the nail. The whole nail also became thicker. The yellow part (half of the nail's lenght) became unattached over the time and a few days ago i accidentally tore the very same nail with my heel more upwards, so it lifted. It's still a bit sore and it's gone dark green from where it's now lifted.
Avatar f tn The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis. Also nail fungal infection may take a bit longer to go away. So it is important to use the topical and oral anrifungals as and when prescribed by a dermatologist.
Avatar f tn I unexpectedly got nail fungus last year, and I treated it with topical tea tree oil and I took Dr Mercola's Probiotic Packs Daily for bout 2 monts, it cleared it up and they have been fine since.
Avatar n tn It appears as though both of my big toes have a new nail growing in underneath the old nail. The old Nail is raised up quite a bit compared to the new growth, which is about 1/4". I also can see a line on both nails that appears to be where the new nail is at, and that is about 75% to the end of my toe. The new nail looks totally fine. I'm 25 years old. None of my other toenails are affected. No pain or other symptoms of any kind.
Avatar m tn You would have to take a prescription oral drug (Lamisil) for three months then it kills the nail. I just went through this with my toe nail. The nail is usually yellowish.
Avatar f tn When I became pregnant almost 3 years ago I developed a nail fungus which I could not treat as I was pregnant. I left it and did nothing about it. After my baby was born nail got worse , and other sytoms emerged like irregular period ,bad breath , skin problems , skin ichy , tiredness , lack of breath. I struggled with nail fungus for 2 years it was getting worse and better. I am also very sensitive to certain food. I cannot treat the nail fungus with medication as I am breastfeeding my baby.
483814 tn?1214311480 It has definitely helped me with the recurring nail fungus, which was extremely irritating, especially as a woman, because you contaminate your nail polish over and over.
Avatar n tn In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or black appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis.
Avatar n tn While some fungal nail infections may respond to topical antifungal creams, lotions, and gels, most infections of the nail plate require oral medications prescribed by your doctor. On the other hand, splinter hemorrhages appear as a red to reddish-brown fine, vertical line that resembles a splinter beneath the nail, this disorder occurs when blood vessels in the nail bed are damaged or from a nail injury.
Avatar f tn I went to the doctor and was told I had nail fungus and needed Lamisil. One tablet, once a day for 3 months. They took and ran tests of my blood to test my liver and they said all tests came back normal. They went ahead and said to begin taking the medication. I'm 21 and relatively healthy. I'm afraid to take Lamisil though. I've heard the side effects are horrible. Should I be worried?
Avatar n tn Then went on line to a vitamin store and bought three different treatmnts for toe nail fungus. The one thing I used 2-3 times a day was nail repair tea tree oil and I bought oreagano oil caps and opened one of themand put the oil in the nail repair. It worked really well. I have been able to keep it under control. I use this 1 -2 times everyday! I apply it after every shower.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Did you have a toe nail bed infection in addition to the toe nail fungus? Did your toe nail fall off or did it just penetrate the nail itself? I am taking the oral Lamisil (luckily my insurance pays for it) and so far so good (check my liver enzymes in a month). I am also taking sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim for the anti bacterial. Yeah I know vinegar is a great cleaner and has many uses. We use it to clean our bathroom floors and even on pergo it doesn't seem to cause any damage.
Avatar n tn You are describing states of nail fungus actually. What works well is pure tea tree oil. It smells strong, but it works well. If any part of the nail has separated from the skin, as often happens, cut that part of the nail off. Even if it has not yet separated, cut the nail as short as you can without injuring yourself. Then apply the tea tree oil twice a day to ALL your nails. Wash socks and underwear in hot water with baking soda .Keep your feet clean and dry.
Avatar f tn I did not realize it was actually a vein until I tried to file it down smooth and it bled. I do know I have somewhat of a nail fungus as well because the nail has been peeling for several years. Not think and yellow though. My podiatrist want to remove the nail and biopsy the area. Not sure what to do about this. He says with Lamisil for 90 days, the nail will grow back healthy. Any thoughts?
