Avatar m tn I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Avatar n tn Very discouraging...I am thinking of insisting on going back on Humulin N for my nigthtime shot. I take Humalog with each meal but that is fine.

Avatar n tn Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin. It is absorbed more slowly, and it's effects last longer, about 12 hours. Usually NPH is used in combination with one of the fast acting insulins. An alternative long acting insulin would be Lantus.
Avatar n tn But for some reason my blood sugars have been really out of whack and I felt like poop. I decided to try giving my shots in my rear and I have had a lot of success...and the insulin is absorbed better there for me because I do a lot of walking and bending to pick things up. I also remember this happening when I was younger to my arms and that's why my doctors had me move to my stomach...too much built up in my arms and the needle just wasn't long enough to get the insulin through.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your reply. I am currently taking gMetformin hcl ( 500mg) 2 tablets twice a day also glyset (25mg) 1 tablet w/meals. My fasting glucose was averaging 102, now 119, (14-day). I'm hoping I don't have to be put on insulin.
Avatar n tn My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.
Avatar n tn The concern with the metformin is if they have to put you under for a csection. I did insulin (humulin for long acting and Humalog with meals) as well. I think they prefer the insulin tho.
Avatar f tn hi, I always have problems with my blood sugar level. I m using humulin. even though I eat a normal portion of meal, my blood sugar goes up after each meal. but it goes down to normal level after 4-5 hours. it makes me confused because I cant inject more because I will get low, what should I do?
Avatar n tn Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can
Avatar f tn I am running out because I am already into my Medicare gap and cannot afford to buy more--but will be going to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville on Thursday and can get more from the nurse there at that time. My Humulin is only about 3 weeks old so it has definitely not expired. Is there anything else you can suggest? I asked about a 30 day supply of Novolog and it is $299.00 which is impossible for me to get since I am on a strict budget due to not working anymore.
Avatar n tn I was a youth counselor at a camp for diabetics when I was younger and it was a great teaching tool for understanding my response to humulin and exercise. I personally used Humalog for a period of 2 years and must say it nearly killed me. The ups and downs were physically devastating and caused me to have to constantly check blood sugars (eight times a day) and if there was any deviation in caloric intake or exercise, or if I had to work a little late, I would get ill.

233382 tn?1193658141 If he is having some high spikes and they seem to be happening more often than they used to happen, maybe it is time to rethink his humulin and humalog. Maybe considering a pump or considering the 24-hour Lantus and a quick-acting insulin like humalog or novalog are worth discussing with his doctor. His a1c level is almost where the goal level is set, so this is encouraging.
Avatar f tn You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
Avatar n tn For the last 5 months I have been not well. In February I switched from Humalog and Humulin N to Novarapid and Novulin N 5 needles a day and seemed to have had problems since. Several unresponsive lows, then highs, then regulated. Then I started to lose weight, insomnia, night sweats, nausea, fatigue, unable to feel symptoms of low or high blood sugar (walking around with 1.9 mmol/l)I also had alot of dental work done (3 surgeries) in that time frame. Thyroid tests normal, HgA1C 6.
Avatar m tn My suggestion is to see an endo and get put on a regimen of basal and bolus (long acting and short acting) insulin and learn how to match your carbs to your insulin dose. You don't want to continue to have highs like that on a regular basis.
Avatar m tn Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
Avatar n tn I agree with the answer that was given, and it may take some time to fine-tune the ratio. Novalog and Humalog doses should be identical... they were for me when I switched, and I have heard others say the same thing.
Avatar n tn I have tried correlating it with high doses of H due to high carb intake and then a possible mixing of the H with the Lantus. Neither theory panned out. Does anyone have any similar experiences? I was warned by nurse that I might have reactions to the Lantus, but have not been able to get back to the clinic to find out if this is a normal reaction that will go away. So far, it does wax and wane so my motivation is confused. Will this go away after awhile?
Avatar n tn If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly. You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
Avatar n tn I ended up in the emergency room twice and immediately was put back on Humulin N (20u in the morning and 10u at bedtime). After doing research, I found out that birth control makes diabetic women blood sugars worse. Has anyone hears of such?
231441 tn?1333892766 I was on insulin (humulin 70/30) by 10 weeks - started on six units in morning and 4 in the evening and went up to 10 in the evening and 4 in the morning in the first few weeks of adjusting. Anyway, I was able to keep levels stable and within target (<95 fasting, <120 2 hrs post eating) up until about 2 weeks ago. Am now 31 weeks.
Boy You could ask your dr about Humalin-N and Humalin-R, which tend to be cheaper. But these are not available as mixed insulins and need to be taken as MDI (Humlin-N, twice a day, and humlin R- abouy 30 minutes before eating). To Reduce insulin requirements, you can follow a low carb diet, reduce weight (if overweight), and add in daily exercise. This should be done under medical supervision as these measures may mean you can reduce your insulin / at risk of low blood sugars.
Avatar n tn The dosage criteria for Humalog are about the same (He takes one unit of Humalog for each 10 carbohydrate grams in the morning and one unit of Humalog for each 12 carbohydrate grams at dinner). The only other difference is that he takes NPH at the same time as Humalog in the am and does not take NPH at the dinner meal. The other difference I have noted is that readings 70 and below occur more often at the noon reading than at any other time.
