a gambling addiction is very different than a drug addiction. anyway, even those who are addicted to the same things as i am may very well be addicted to them for different reasons than my own. it may be easier or more difficult for them to overcome their addiction to the same things i'm addicted to. for that reason, it's not a good idea to assume other people can't understand our addiction. in fact, sometimes a sober mind...one that has never had an addiction of it's own...

Well, sure the medication could be making you FEEL more impulsive, but you're still in control of your decisions and compulsions. Have you ever been diagnosed with manic-depression, or Bi-polar disorder? If not, it sounds as though perhaps the Effexor may be making you a little manic. Do you feel very "up"? The sad thing here is that the medication IS working to decrease the initial symptoms you started taking it for.

Gambling addictions are treated just like any other addiction. You have a few choices. The first would be a rehab situation. Gambling rehabs are all over the country, but are less prevalent than drug rehabs. You could also look online for Gambler's Anonymous. You can also get them into a personal therapist who specializes in addiction therapy.

If you wish to, you could do some counselling with him maybe to learn how to be supportive without being codependant. Gambling is an addiction like any other and you are right, it IS about self control or lack of it. Im not sure "nice, supportive" can do an addict any good without him being committed to stopping his addiction and making a commitment to treatment. I'd make getting help and sticking with it and NO GAMBLING a condition of my supportive.

ve had RLS all my life now the withdrawing is making it worse. I remember being eight and having it. Mirapex or baclofen. They are a non addictive muscle relaxants. PLMD, RLS and apnea. My neuro put me on mirapex immediately upon seeing the results. I actually feel like myself again. I had no idea that I was sleeping so poorly, especially after hearing about so much fatigue from my friends here. I can wake up and actually be awake!! I still shake, twitch, jerk and am quite tingly. But sleeping well sure makes it all more manageable... So for those of you with sleep disorders, or that think you might, ASK about Mirapex!

When it comes to addiction, my experience is that we oftentimes have a DOC (Drug of choice), though that drug, be it alcohol. heroin, pain pills, benzos, can change...stopping heroin..then the compulsion to drink alcohol can kick in and on and on we go. It's a slippery slope... I believe that alcohol and addiction are one and the same. I also think that is why aftercare is crucial. Wonder what you people think.
