Avatar f tn Yes, Milk Thistle is available specifically formulated for dogs. Human varieties should not be given, as they contain alcohol and sometimes other things that are unsuitable for canines. Here's a link for dog-friendly Milk Thistle (but there are lots, so you could just Google "Milk Thistle for Dogs"). http://search.petwellbeing.
Avatar f tn There is no consensus among hepatologists about taking mik thistle, so for that reason I wouldn't do it. That said, there are members here who have reported that their hepatologists had no problem with their patients taking it. Some hepatologists say it's okay to take only before or after treatment itself and some say it's even okay to take during treatment. I would definitely look to the advice of your own hepatologist in this matter, if you want to pursue it.

Milk thistle may cause a rash or lead to severe allergic reaction. Since milk thistle may mimic the effects of estrogen, some women should avoid this herb. 1273473 tn?1270775840 Because standard of care with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin therapy is costly, has significant side effects, and fails to cure about half of all infections, many patients seek complementary and alternative medicine to improve their health, such as Silymarin, derived from milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Milk thistle's clinical benefits for chronic hepatitis C are unsettled due to variability in standardization of the herbal product.

Avatar f tn Generally, herbs aren't used in isolation. Milk thistle is good at cleansing the liver, but it is usually used in formula with other herbs that affect the liver in different ways. You also have to be careful with milk thistle. For example, if you're on medication, it can cleanse the medication out of your system before it has a chance to work. Other herbs that support the liver don't have this effect. It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
Avatar f tn s Way Brand Milk Thistle, which - according to the packaging - contains 175 mg Milk Thistle extract (seed), 80% silymarin; and 180 mg Blessed Thistle (stern, leaf, flower). Is this safe? Is it helpful? Is there any kind of sensation at the liver site which indicates that you need to seek medical help immediately? I've read on the forum that some people actually experience bleeds. Does this manifest as bruising, or can it happen w/o any visible indications?

Avatar f tn I'm on the fence of going on Viread, just because I'm on the boarder of what the guidelines are. So, to help, I'm wondering what the main side effects are of those that take it? I read all of the information on-line (lactic acidosis, worsening of liver function, worsening of HBV, and then others less severe). Does the really bad side effects like lactic acidosis, worse liver function, worse HBV happen with those taking it for HBV or is it focusing on those that take it for HIV?
