I had a diagnosis of hypertension and tachycardia pre pregnancy which was controlled with lisinipril and metoprolol. After I became pregnant they switched my metoprolol to labetalol and took me off of lisinipril.Labetalol did NOT work! Long story short, over the eight and a half months I've had to stay on metoprolol and actually have it increased to 150mg twice a day. Hopefully that's all that I Will have to have as i approach the final weeks of this pregnancy.
In short, mostly no. I have been on 4 beta-blockers and a couple calcium channel blockers over time. Any md sees my list and it would be assumed I have rocket high blood pressure BUT in fact any more I feel lucky to have one at all. That being said, it matters what the dose it. I was able to take a LOT of propranolol without affecting my bp too much. Coreg makes for a little more hypotension. Metoprolol, not too bad. Labetalol, one pill and I'm dizzy... but it does cut my rate down.
If it ends in "olol", it is a BB. There is metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, labetalol... There are many. That is, of course, just the generic name.
I have taken Toprol xl 25 mg for about 5 years. My doctor switched me to metoprolol several months ago. When I filled my prescription this time, it was from a different mfg and I think I may be having problems with it as I just don't feel right. Could changing the mfg make a difference? ALSO, my doctor prescribed 50 mg to be cut in half for my prescribed 25 mg dose. Does cutting this tablet in half compromise the time release?
Hi, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure about 2 months or so before I found out that I was pregnant. I immediately stopped taking the Norvasc and Hydroclorothiazide that I was prescribed after finding out that I was pregnant. I'm 9 weeks now and was recently prescibed Labetalol 200mg twice a day. I am soooooooo skeptical about taking any meds while pregnant although my doctor tells me that there are no side effects and that it won't effect my unborn baby.
Lately I am getting worse tachycardia even with the 50mg metoprolol twice a day. It seems to come and go in bouts. Overall the metoprolol has helped my tachycardia a lot in the several months I've been on it, but I wonder if it's run its course since the tachycardia seems to be coming back somewhat.
I'm only 33, in decent shape, about 178 pounds, 5'11, a bit out of shape but not terribly. I tend to not tolerate exercise too well in that it triggers my tachycardia at times.
I saw my OB/Gyn today for the first time and he has told me that he wants me to go onto Labetalol 100mg a day during my pregnancy because Atenolol can stunt the growth of the baby later in pregnancy. I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me about Labetalol, like for example do I just start taking them instead of Atenolol or what? Are the affects the same as Atenolol?

5mg started yesterday, I was originally taking lisinopril 10mg and metoprolol 25mg. I was fine with lisinopril and metoprolol the only issue was when I get a cough it will last 2 to 3 months, I can't get any sleep at all do to dry cough. When they were trying to control rate with JUST beta blockers... I took 200 of propranolol and 300 of metoprolol and occasional 100 of labetalol here and there. It helped but it worked a LOT better when other classes of drugs were added. Since the point is to slow you down, it generally SLOWS you down. When I was on THAT much, I felt like I was nailed to the couch. Now, instead I take coreg as a beta blocker and diltiazem, and flecainide and lisinopril.
I developed hypertension after she was born and was put on 200 mg Labetalol twice a day. It did what it was supposed to do, however I also developed post partum anxiety/depression and was put on Escitalopram, Alprazolam (as needed) and klonopin (1mg) at night only. The side effects of the labetalol for me were awful, so once my readings got better, I weaned off of it and am now not taking anything for Bp which usually stays in a good range (120-135 over 78-85).

They did not seem to think much about it, and it seemed to linger after the baby. I was on 200 mg of Labetalol during pregnancy, but I felt ok, just stuffy headed, sinusy. After I had my baby, I felt horrible. I had the cramps, and was tired, dizzy, ill feeling. I told my GP and she ran every test in the book-TSH, CT of face/head due to headaches, eventually chest CT, and basic bloodwork.
I've had preeclamplsia with both of my pregmancies and been on labetalol and nifedipine. This baby is so far fine and my son is a very happy healthy toddler. I believe I got as far as I did in my pregnancies thanks to these medications so would definitely recommend taking them for baby's sake.
i have chronic hypertension and i'm currently taking labetalol 3x a day.. it s a category c and i heard its not safe in first trimester but okay in other trimesters.
My bp came down only to shoot right back up moments later. They gave me a prescription for labetalol and said to fill it immediately and see my PCP asap.
A few days later I saw my doctor, my bp was still really high even on the meds. She switched me to 100mg ER Metoprolol to take in the morning and 20mg lisinopril for the night. I had to take my bp every day and went back every week.

Yes, I know that Toprol XL is the brand name extended release version of metoprolol. However, there is a generic equivalent called metoprolol er, which I assume his doctor gave him. I have read many posts on this forum where users indicate that switching from Toprol XL to metoprolol er still report having problems. The generics are not always as good as the brand name ones.
