Avatar m tn Blood Test Predicts Dementia Risk A new test can help predict whether a patient will develop frontal lobe dementia (Frontotemporal Dementia or FTD). Next to Alzheimer’s, FTD is the form of dementia that strikes people most frequently at a relatively young age—younger than 65. In FTD, large numbers of brain cells begin to die off in the frontal lobe, the foremost part of the brain which comprises about 30 percent of brain mass.
Avatar m tn If anyone in your family has experienced dementia at a young age (before 65), you and other family members may be at increased risk of developing frontal lobe dementia (FTD) – also known as Pick's disease. A new blood test may reveal your specific risk. In 1892, Czechoslovakian neurologist Arnold Pick first documented a type of dementia in which degeneration of cells occurs in the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of the brain) where cognitive and behavioral functions are controlled.
Avatar f tn Your MRI shows age related atrophy changes that could be limited to temporal and parietal lobes depending on whether you have suggestion of alzheimer’s disease, frontal and temporal lobes in frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and global atrophy if there is vascular dementia. These need to be clinically correlated if you have any senile cognitive changes.
Avatar f tn My wife was recently prescribed Memantine for headaches. She took 5mg nightly for 4 days and during that time she still had a headache, but no side effects. On the 5th day the headaches stopped, but now she's constantly nauseous and woozy. This has been going on for 4 days. Is this just a matter of her body adjusting to the drug?
Avatar m tn I need the bupropion for the anxiety associated with Nystagmus, but I know it causes blurred vision and convergence problems. Should I even bother to try memantine? Thanks.

Avatar f tn Hello my peeps. Sorry I've been MIA - but those of you who know me, know the multiple medical reasons why. Anywho, I went to my neuro again today (now I see her every 2-3 months instead of every month). I had told her that my primary sent me for another neuropsych eval because of the issues I told her I was having. I had the testing at the University about 3 wks ago & won't get the final results until the 18th.
Avatar m tn Hi. My MRI reads: ... Patient is status post frontotemporal craniotomy for removal of meningioma. T2 hyperintensity is demonstrated in the left frontal lobe in the vicinity of the surgical site suggesting encephalomalacia. Minimal areas of periventricular T2 hyperintensity are noted... Impression: Postsurgical changes status post removal of left frontal meningioma with no evidence for recurrence. So I get that there is no recurrence, happy day, but what is the rest about?

Avatar n tn Is there any kind of help for people in the first stages of dementia beside Namenda.? Is there anything in the health food stores that can be taken.? And does vitamin B1 help.?
Avatar f tn That's complex. It depends when it first started. Dementia is very clinically specific and only a neurologist could distinguish between that and psychosis though dementia usually involves forgetfulness and memory loss. I do know that elderly relatives I have that were diagnosed with dementia improved with the medication Namenda.
1346447 tn?1327862572 After six months of medicine that problem is over but now she had dementia. Is it possible that dementia may be side effect of medicines? The age of my wife is 70.
Avatar f tn My mom was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia in October 2015. Her disease has progressed a lot in the last 4 months. I found out recently that one of her sisters also had dementia. My question, am I at a higher risk to get this disease? If so is there a time when symptoms would begin to show in me?
Avatar n tn dementia or alzhemier <can't spell it, can also show the same signs as a reaction to medication, or a different illness that has gone undiagnosed you should talk to that family members doctors. if it is a medication problem it can stop the signs but if it is dementia or alzhiemers then they have medication that can help prolong the person lives and reduce early problems.. but there is no cure at this time.. just don't get angry or overreact..
Avatar m tn some uncommon degenerative causes of dementia include vascular dementia (also referred to as multi-infarct dementia), frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body disease, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy". There is much to read and research about AD and Dementia. Only someone that has been there can understand the stress and anxiety that comes with caring for a loved one. However the rewards can not be dismissed either.
1321487 tn?1385294679 try out memantine so get a better memory, try prednisone for weakness but don't overdo it.
Avatar f tn Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type. But there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies. Dementia is often incorrectly referred to as "senility" or "senile dementia," which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging.
