m curious why your dr. gave you Frova? Usually the triptans, like Imitrex and Maxalt are very effective and have fewer side effects..

Right now I'm on my 7th migraine in the last 4 weeks. I have a herniated c5-7 that is compressing on the spinal cord. I've been taking Maxalt with some of my migraines, which does help, but insurance only allows so many in a month and they are expensive. I've been also taking percocet in place of the maxalt, but it does not work as well for the headaches. Is there something I can do to try and prevent these migraines? Are there other natural alternatives rather then medication?

Or do you use a Triptan for acute migraine, like zomig, maxalt, amerge? There are many listed on the forum, under which Triptans doe you use, and Happy with Preventative treatment......... Sorry you ar suffering so much. It sounds like you need to get with your Dr and get on some treatment for these....if you haven't already. Or even be referred to a migraine specialist.........

I have bad headaces, and I was on Maxalt (for migranes) it workes within like 60 mins. After awhile, I started on Topamax to help them.

There are many brands of triptans on the market (Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Axert... to name a few) but Frovatriptan is different from all of them and is used specifically for menstrual migraines. Frova is the brand name of the medication and Frovatriptan is the generic name of the medication. The way that Frovatriptan works that is different from regular triptans is that a much longer half-life, that means it stays in your body for much longer than the other forms of triptans.

t mean to interrupt but I am actually a pharmacist and thought I could clarify the maxalt questions.... Maxalt is not a beta blocker. It is a 5HT1B receptor agonist. Basically it's a triptan drug that is used for vascular migraines. Vascular migraines cause vasodilation of blood vessels and that dilation causes pain. Triptan drugs cause vasoconstriction of those blood vessels and thus reduced the pain caused by pressure.

) There are specific triptans that are geared more toward hormonally triggered migraines, such as Frova (brand name) / Frovatriptan (generic name). Out of all of the triptans, I would personally suggest talking to your doctor about Frova, as it has been proven to be the most helpful when it comes to stopping an acute migraine attack triggered by hormones in women.

I am now on depakote and maxalt for migraines and nothing completely gets rid of them. A friend is really into the holistic approach and suggested crystallized ginger. I recently tried it and it seems to be working. I am giving it more time but hope it continues.

My 18 year old son has terrible migraines and has tried the Imitrex also with terrible results. He has been using the Relpax and within 20 to 30 mins and only one Relpax pill the headache is gone! He suffered so many years wiht Migraines and now with his dose of Nortriptylin and his relpax as a backup he is living headache free. Definitely try the Relpax.

It seems almost as if my body either builds up a tolerance to these medications, or my migraines grow in severity and become to powerful for the medication. It could also be a combination of both. I have been on imetrex, frova, axert, (something begining with an 'r') and treximet. Right now I am on frova, and it is failing to work, what am I going to do?

I've been a migraine sufferer for roughly 35 years. I've tried nearly all meds, acupuncture, acupressure, massage, meditation, you name it. Nothing worked. You need to find what works for you. This is what works for me. I take a low-dose beta blocker but absolutely no pain meds (not even tylenol), no anti-inflammatories, nor muscle relaxers for any type of pain. Only if my pain is absolutely without a doubt migraine pain I'll take a Frova.

For instance, I have hormonal migraines (sometimes severe) that respond often to triptans like Frova or Maxalt, but not anti-inflammatories (they only respond to narcotics if they are extremely severe). I also have nocturnal hypnic headaches that do not respond at all to triptans or narcotics, but can be controlled (prevented) better by high doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

I had tried, experimenting w/dr., maxalt and frova, as well as imitrex shots (horrible abdominal pain that overshadowed migraine with second time I tried it) &imitrex nasal spray- what a nightmare that was!

I am currently seeing put me on Nadolol which my body did not like, it effected my blood circulation and so on and so forth so he took me off that and decided we should try Verapamil [daily] and frova [spell check] as needed, does anyone have an insight on either of these medications? She proclaims that she diluted and injected her migraine medicine (Maxalt) because she keeps throwing it up. Her symptoms, however, where those of an opiate overdose....blue hands and face, low respiration, eyes rolling backwards, staggering, tremoring arms upon waking up, disorientation, etc. Does anyone know what the side effects would be of injecting maxalt? I find this impossible to believe that it would knock her out and turn her blue.

I have a friend who gets migraines. She takes frova and I know its expensive. She also has HCV but her liver is so healthy it's amazing. She told me about a book titled, Heal Your Headache (the 1, 2 ,3 method). I bet if you googled it you can find it. The theory is there are a number of triggers that set off your migraine. Sometimes by identifying your food triggers, you can get rid of them through diet. At least that's what she told me about the book.

does either imitrex or maxalt contain caffeine? I was taking Maxalt for migraines and it worked great! Now my insurance has decided I need to try Imitrex before they will approve coverage for the Maxalt. The Imitrex took about 2 hours to have any effect, but eventually my headache subsided. Since then I have had recurring headaches for 4 days.

My question is, are these rebound headaches from the Maxalt? I use the Maxalt no more then once to twice a week. This could also be sinus headaches too, I'm not 100% sure as I feel pressure in my head also. Is it okay to take the Maxalt 1-2 times a week? I also have a spinal cord nerve injury and I do take the long acting oxycontin every 8 hours for the pain.

They have been increasing in quantity and severity until about a year and a half ago I had to stop working completely. I am on a combination of darvacet, tramadol, topomax and maxalt. The combination leaves me in bed about 18 hours a day. I have had two MRIs. One with contrast and one without. Neither shows any good reason for my pain. The headache never goes away and I have no idea what makes it hit so hard every few days (room blacked out and crawling to the bathroom). Am I the only one.

My friend had called me and I told her that I was too sick to talk and that I had run out of my Maxalt. My friend is a life saver! When she got off of work, she picked up my Maxalt and brought it to me. She also brought me some hot dogs, chips and pop because I had nothing to eat in the house. Hubby left on Wednsday and took the kids up to the cabin, so I've been here alone. I thought that was extremely nice of my friend to go and do that for me.

When I was having frequent migraines and my insurance would only pay for one refill of Maxalt each month, I obtained prescriptions for both Maxalt and Relpax and filled both each month. They worked equally well for me.

it works really fast i just cant spray anything up my nose! haha one time was all i could handle. i take maxalt. for me it works the fastest. your dr. will probably give you several diff. kinds of samples and have you see which works best on you.

I also get migraines. have you paid attention to any of the known migraine "triggers" like red wiine & chocolate, hard cheeses etc. You probably have but I thought I'd mention it. Like the others, I take Maxalt for mine & it always works. Maxalt is from the migraine interrupter family & also includes imetrix & Zomig. Good luck - it sounds very difficult.

i took 2 maxalt on saturday for a migraine, it didnt help at all, actually made it worse making me vomit for 3 days and today is friday, 6 days later and i still feel like, tired, weak, foggy, not hungry, cant really go to the bathroom even though i feel like i have to. is this gonna go away?

My first 2pregnacys they also gave me vicoden for when migranes were unbearable. This pregnancy my Dr told me I could also take maxalt( I was told w my first 2 that maxalt was not safe AT ALL) after doing some research I decided against maxalt but am continuing firocet.
