Common Questions and Answers about Lidocaine epinephrine side effects

Avatar f tn I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this: "Additionally, epinephrine and lidocaine usually aren’t used in patients with thyroid disease, or disease of the kidneys or liver.
Avatar f tn s correct that local anesthetics contain both lidocaine and adrenalin (epinephrine). They both can have effects on the heart, adrenalin has an obvious effect and lidocaine is actually an antiarrhythmic drug (class 1b sodium blocker) which may have proarrhythmic effects. The problem is - adrenalin is added to prevent the lidocaine from having systemic effects, the blood vessels are constricted. If you have reactions towards lidocaine, choosing the one without adrenalin would be bad.
Avatar m tn In a simple dental procedure, I had what I can only describe as a seizure after getting what was supposed to be lidocaine and epinephrine injection. The area never got numb, and the pain from the point of the needle each time they attempted to inject me was painful. I was taken to the ER and released after 8 hours with no explanation. I read that lidocaine can cause a seizure. I have had injections many times with no problem. What could have gone wrong?
Avatar n tn with virtually no risk of side effects, especially cardiac ones, that would prevent you from having them administered. What it sounds like is you had a mild reaction to the epinephrine in the anesthetic previously. You can have your dentist use an anesthetic that does not contain epinephrine to rule out any possibility of these complications. For example, carbocaine 3% without epi. I use it every day on heart patients. It is perfectly safe if you are not allergic to it.
383138 tn?1314167773 By the way, there was no mention of possible fatal side effects before hand. The pain relief will not help at all, if I am dead. So, if your cardiologist says NO.. That would definitely be my answer. NO.
Avatar n tn Lidocaine used as an anesthetic often has a small amount of epinephrine in the solution. The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever.
Avatar f tn This is only somewhat related to the deep concern you have for your child. I had a lidocaine (?) injection which was one of dozens over the years. One such numbing up caused me heart palpitations and my face went white. The doctor gave me oxygen to breathe while I got over it. I really can't say why that one injection caused that reaction after having so many many over the years.

Avatar m tn Thank-you kindly Dr, for taking the time to reply. I am a little confused, When you say that Duvanta20 is a serotonin & not epinephrine, what is the difference. The side effects stated are for the duration for the prescription period or are they long lasting ?. my doctor has recommended that i take it for 6 months (pardon me for asking such questions as i am curious to know as much as possible before i start the medication.thanks again for your time.
Avatar f tn m also quitting smoking.) He said that one of the side effects could be suicidal thoughts. I have never had these before in my life. I am scared to death that this medication is going to make me think about things like that. Does this happen to a lot of people? And, does it happen with people who don't usually have these types of thoughts?
Avatar n tn I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me. The Epinephrine was used to clot my blood and the Xylocaine to numb the area. I know the medical community doesn't know everything and they reassured me this medication would not reach my baby but I think they may have been wrong on this one.
Avatar n tn This is the second time in two years this happens. The first time it was lidocaine with epinephrine; this time it was carbocaine without epinephrine. I think the reaction resulted in slight chest tightness even. As I told the doctor, he stopped the surgery (he had not started it yet) and sent me to my primary doctor to get cardiac clearance. I am 29 and have never had any heart problems.
Avatar n tn 9 days ago my new dentist gave me a large dose of lidocaine/epinephrine on back molar (#17). Deep filling was needed. Most of my tongue has been numb since this procedure and I have had heart palpitations, chest pounding off and on since this happened. Also start shivering off and on. For past 3 days I have had chest pain when lying down...chest feels like it is being squeezed. Feel it now in any position but lying down increases the feeling. For past 2 days intense headache.
Avatar n tn Thank goodness depression is not one of the side effects I have. The only time I have ever taken Benadryl was in the hospital prior to blood transfusions.
Avatar f tn I recently went through a similar experience with lidocaine. I had a ruptured cyst in my breast and as it had broken through one of my milk ducts it had developed an abscess. The doctor wouldn't let me leave without having a butt shot of antibiotics - she wanted fast acting because I had a high fever and my breast was the size of Mount St. Helens. When the nurse came in to inject me she made the mistake of telling me that it was antibiotic PLUS lidocaine.
1817071 tn?1366228243 I am hoping it works as I had quite a few side effects on the Norpace. Good for you, getting another doctor. I do not think the doctors realize how difficult and life changing afib can be. I am considering an ablation, but hope the Rythmol works for a while so I have a chance to look into whether and where I want to have an ablation. It has made my life so limited I am ready to do almost anything. Good luck and let us know how you do with the new doctor.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have recently been having a problem with sinus tachycardia (elevated heart rate) and I am on medication for it. (cartia xt). My heart rate still tends to be on the high side. I have a wisdom tooth which has cavities in it, and it is hurting me so I am going to my dentist in two days. I am afraid the pain medication the use will raise my heart rate. Should I be worried about this?
Avatar n tn She still has 1 filling left to get and frankly I am a little unsure about her having it done. The paramedics asked the dentist what she gave her and she told them lidocaine and epinephrine.
Avatar n tn For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. The first shot was fine, but the second injection sill caused my heart to pound hard, my chest felt shallow and made me feel a little panicy. It passed and the 3rd injection did the same.
Avatar f tn 100,000, Dose 20cc. Yes, this is the first time I have experienced this occurrence. I have a surgical biopsy soon because of more calcification in the same breast 1 year later; what do you suggest I tell the anaestesiologist?
Avatar f tn I was curious if anyone experiences really wretched side effects with Lyrica? I find it numbs my mind almost uncontrollably, and causes me to walk around in a fog for most of my day. Unfortunately, my doctor put me on a *very* low dose, because I was concerned about these very side effects. I was hoping someone could tell me whether or not these side effects actually went away, if the body eventually adjusted to them?
Avatar n tn Over the past 10 years I have had reactions to lidocaine (ended up being taken by PARPAMEDICS to ER) passed, out had shaking seizures, swollen tongue - could not talk for over 3 hours, could not breathe, 5 years ago - Carbociane, petite seizures, trouble breathing. Today - Tetracaine, tingling tongue, somewhat swollen, cough difficulty swalling, and nearly passed out., Dr then gave Epinephrine - flush, really hot, and constant shaking for over one hour.
