Levemir insulin peak

Common Questions and Answers about Levemir insulin peak

levemir

Avatar f tn I see the confusion If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
Avatar n tn Carbs provide a surge of BG so a surge of insulin is needed to regulate the BG, that is the function of rapid insulin. Levemir is a Basal insulin provides a long term (24 hour) insulin supply. Levemir is NOT meant to counter BG rise due to food. eating food will raise BG for 2, 3 or 4 hours levemir lasts 24 hours a rapid insulin lasts about 4 hours so it matches the BG result from food.
Avatar f tn the levemir is a long acting insulin so it will be in her system for 24 hours. what is here normal does of Levemir? when and how often dose she take levemir? She will have to check her BG more often and watch out for Hypos (low BG). make sure she always has her test kit and a fast acting carb (IE reg sugar soda, orange juice, glucose tabs...) to raise BG with her.
Avatar n tn My problem was due to skipping meal, I must have to eat every three hours, atleast a little . But sugar is increasing for that too. I need more insulin, Levemir. I do not know how I cope with the opposing forces of blood pressure and sugar decrease. My body will have to be habituated, so that it does not declare emergency, and excite liver and adrenals for dumping of sugar and increase of pressure. Now I am starting to believe that, meat can do that job.
Avatar n tn between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well. I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour. I am forced to go to bed with readings around 20, so that I will wake up with 7-8.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn Hi, what is your medication. While BS in the 60s is not yet dangerous, you certainly don't want it any lower. If you are on basal insulin, and I'm assuming your dr has instructed you on how to adjust doses, then you may slightly reduce your basal insulin overnight.
Avatar f tn I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.
Avatar n tn Some people use mixed insulin, which contains both a fast acting and a long acting insulin. This may be labelled as 70/30 or 50/50. If you are taking mixed insulin, it will be important not to skip meals, and to eat on time, to avoid going low. overall, insulin is a great tool. It will give you much better control of your blood sugars.
Avatar n tn About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.
Avatar m tn i am using u500 insulin to help control my high blood sugars and am getting out of breath rather easily. Do you think it may be something wrong with my heart?
Avatar f tn I even tried Levemir, but after two days the pains came back. I stopped all shots and the pain and other symptoms went away. Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?
Avatar n tn My daughter seems to be having the same problem. She's 15 and takes 68 u of lantus at nite and supliments w/novolog pen when she's eating. They just keep increasing her dosage, but nothing seems to change. She eats pretty decently (for a teen), but she always seems to be high. I also wondered if she might be resistent to the lantus. We've tried new bottles, etc. How many units do you take per day?
Avatar n tn Your wife is probably being put on Lantus or Levemir basal insulin, both of which are peakless. And the intraday variability is much lower. So things will improve. The hardest part is figuring out what the correct dose is. But once she gets that sorted, her control should get easier and better.
Avatar n tn Some people do think that Lantus insulin causes some patients to gain weight, while the new Levemir insulin apparently does not do this. I read some articles about this just yesterday and was surprised, for I take Lantus and have noticed no weight gain at all. So this could be a factor. However, a change in metabolism in middle age probably is the real culprit, along with possibly a slower metabolism because you are not eating. Exercise should help both problems. Start walking!
Avatar m tn m taking Metformin as well as insulin. The Victoza has done wonders, it helps me have a better control and I have lowered my intake of insulin. Can someone help me?
Avatar n tn If you believe your are reacting badly to Lantus (or any other medications) you should ask your physician for an alternative, at least to verify it is the medication and not some other factor that is causing the problem. Lantus is popular for it's 24 hour action, but so is Levemir (Novo Nordisk). NPH insulin can also be used for long acting insulin, though two injections may be needed to get the 24 hour coverage.
Avatar f tn My doctor recently changed my long acting insulin from lantus 90 units at night, to toujeo 90 units. Since taking toujeo I have gained 8 pound in 3 weeks. I'm so not happy. Lantus I didn't have that problem. I just had hip surgery so I can't move around as much. The doctor is like your making excuses about gaining weight. I follow a vegan vegetarian meal plan I'm not making excuses. I haven't gained weight in two years. I've been losing. She is pissing me off.
Avatar n tn The modern short acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is Humalog (insulin lispro). The modern long acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is levemir (insulin detemir). You will need to do basal-bolus testing to determine your correct insulin dosages for each type of insulin. You should also look into low carb eating (paleo style), which will help with managing blood sugar as well.
