Levemir dose

Common Questions and Answers about Levemir dose

levemir

Avatar f tn I see the confusion If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily. But at the doses you are taking there is likely no real benefit of one over the other. Glad to hear your BS have evened out a bit. It is tough when you are watching those carbs and trying to spread them out, but I am sure you are quite good at it given this is a major basis of CF care(I had alot of experience with CF diabetes during my training in the Bay area).
Avatar n tn Your basal insulin dose (levemir) appears too low, as your background blood sugar is always high. I would recommend that you work with your doctor to increase your levemir dose such that you can get your base blood sugar levels down to a more normal level. That may need to be done over a period of days to weeks. You may want to try splitting the levemir into 2 doses 12 hours apart as some people find this gives better coverage.
Avatar n tn Levemir takes effect in 3 - 6 hours, peaks in 6 - 15 hours, and is gone within 18 - 24 hours. It is possible your Levemir dose is gone before you expect it to be, which is why your scores are now higher in the morning. Consult your endocrinologist about possibly changing the time that you take the Levemir, as that could change your scores.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar f tn m angry my dr. never did anything about this. My daughter splits her insulin dose, 1/2 in the morning, and 1/2 at night. I was wondering if this would help? Also how to do it? My dr won't help me.
Avatar n tn I am trying to lower my sugar level with the help of humalog and levemir. Medhelp members are helping me to do the job. In the mean time I have been successful in lowering the sugar to some extents. I also could know how to dose the insulin for the best results I appriciate the cotributions done by MEDHELP and its members.
Avatar m tn That tells me that you either have made an error in your dosing or you are really not a Diabetic. No one takes 500units of Insulin in one dose. I am a considered a brittle Diabetic and I only use about 300 units every 3-4 days. Maybe that's why you are out of breath, lol. You would actually die if you took that much Insulin at once.
Avatar f tn I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.
Avatar n tn Alternatively, talk to you dr about using levemir. This is dosed morning and night and the dose can be different for morning and evening to target optimal blood sugars. There is also a new insulin called Tresiba. Many find that this gives very stable blood sugars with less risk of lows. You may also discuss this with your Dr.
Avatar n tn I have type 2 diabetes (2 yrs). My A1C is 7.6 I am presently using Levemir Flex Pen (22) before bed. I take synthroid for hypothyrodism (10 yrs) and recently started taking crestor for high cholesterol (which is now within normal range) I 58, female and over-weight. Question: I want to start taking 200 mcg of chromium picolinate to help with my diabetes. Is this safe to take with the medications I am currently taking? Also, when is the best time to take it.
Avatar n tn I havnt seen a lot of results yet.
Avatar f tn t giving him any the lantus people wants me on toujeo cause their patent was coming up so they stopped sampling it!!!! He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar f tn carb ratio. I also highly recommend the book, Using Insulin by John Walsh.
Avatar n tn It was working so well for me previously. I went to a new endo about a year ago, and he suggested I try Levemir instead of the Lantus. Once I started the Levemir, I noticed a marked improvement with more consistent bg levels. I am a Type 1 diagnosed at 33, and I am 10 years into the disease. I take sliding Humalog and 12 U Levemir at bed. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn s and was theerfore recently put on to Lantis (1 dose in the am) with Novorapid (meals), but it does not seem to be working for me. I was not getting into single figures on the dose pescribed and upping it (now by 2 units) has not helped. Novorapid sort of keeps it under control at meals but my base rate is simply not adequate.
1340011 tn?1276617767 If those are high and all you are on is a basal (long-acting) insulin then it sounds as if you also need to be on a bolus or fast-acting insulin before each meal dose determined by an Insulin:Carb ratio. That is the standard of care and if your doctor doesn't understand that (many don't) you should see an endo. When you get on the right basal-bolus doses, you will see those numbers come down. But if you are eating a lot of carbs, you will be fighting a losing battle.
Avatar f tn I even tried Levemir, but after two days the pains came back. I stopped all shots and the pain and other symptoms went away. Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?
Avatar n tn My doctor started me in September last year on just NPH and my dose got quite high. (65 units in the evening and about 45 in the morning) Then he added the bolus, "as needed", without an adjustment. He did say that as long as I was taking consistent readings, and was able to do the carb counting, that I could adjust the bolus to match my readings, trying to figure out the carb ratio by trying to maintain a difference of no more than plus/minus 2 mmol/L between before meal and after.
Avatar n tn Lantus works by crystalizing under ths skin. The "other" 24 hour insulin is Levemir, by Novo-Nordisk. It does not crystalize, but attains it's 24 hour effect another way. If you are haing difficulty with Lantus, you have every right to ask to try an equivalent alternitive. If your doctor has a reson why he thinks this is not advisable, he will tell you. The switch from Lantus to Levemir for me required no dose adjustment, and it performed just as well as Lantus.
Avatar n tn I just switched to levemir, I go to bed at about 100, wake up at 140 (lil higher than i want) but ill just up the dose 2 units. But seriously, levemir is much more stable than lantus. Its long acting like lantus, but Ive found there isnt any werid peaks and im more even.
Avatar m tn I am diabetic 2. Taking Levemir 23 units at night. 13 unit humalog in every meal. Sugar is not very well controlled yet. But does not go above 10 mmol/l . I feel shortness of breath, if I walk or quickly come in the bed. Before 6 months EKG was done and no problem.
Avatar f tn 2 I have also lost 49lbs without trying over the last 4 months. I take insulin. 30 units of levemir in the a.m. and 12 units of Novolog before meals. Could any of this have anything to do with my diabetes? I have had other tests and surgerys in the past. Went off the Depo shot 2 years ago after being on it for 9 years. My GYN said something about autoammune and diabetes but didn't understand ( he talks quick, lol ) I would really appreciate any input!! Thank you!!
Avatar n tn I was recently on a flight from the UK to Mauritius (12 hour flight). After eating a usual sized meal, and having injected my usual Novo Rapid dose pre-meal, I watched a movie and then at 11pm time of origin injected levemir as I would usually do before bed. As I injected, however, there was a very unusual reaction on the skin (in a usual injection site). The site turned very red and then spread to a short area around the injection site.
