Common Questions and Answers about Levaquin class

levaquin

Avatar m tn Hi everyone...has anyone ever been on Levaquin (it's in the same class of antibiotics as Cipro)? I was on it for 5 days of my 10 when I started getting some wrist pain and they took me off it. I am now feeling pain here and there, but no idea if it's related. I didn't even know it causes tendon damage! Just wondering if anyone else had those side effects??? If so, did they ever go away?

I think my mom was on it (IV) but didn't have any side effects. All I can say is if they want to put you on it, ask for something else unless there is no choice! Thanks!
Avatar m tn t find nearly as much bad press as Levaquin and other drugs in this class had. This is the reason for my reluctance. I still may need to try it if the alternative doesn't work.
Avatar f tn I heard there was a class action lawsuit against the pharmacueticals that make Levaquin, so you might want to check into that if you don't get any better.
483814 tn?1214311480 Levofloxacin should be avoided in patients with known risk factors such as prolongation of the QT interval, patients with uncorrected hypokalemia, and patients receiving class IA (quinidine, procainamide), or class III (amiodarone, sotalol) antiarrhythmic agents.
Avatar n tn after taking Levaquin 500 mg for 2 days I had a sudden onset of stiffness at inner rt thigh. after 1 hr could not put any weight on rt leg. numb spots bilateral calves. I stopped Levaquin and contacted my dr. who changed the antibiotic and told me to take motrin for the inflammation and explained that tendon rupture was rare on Levaquin. This is day 4 I'm walking with a slight limp due to stiffness inner thigh and weight bearing.

1373852 tn?1307843048 I would like to know if drugs such as levaquin and cipro and the medicines they use to keep a person in a medical coma can cause fibromyalgia or symptoms like it that persist once the person is recovered from the original illness.I had a bad asthma attack nine months ago,was put in a medical coma for respiratory failure because of it.I have had every test or almost.cbc, autoimmune, hiv, hep c,b,a.I have had emg, eeg, nerve conduction, brain mri, cervical spine.
Avatar m tn Both Cipro and Levaquin are antibiotics of a class known as flouroquinalones. Patients often have systemic problems with one of the other, particularly muscular pains and tendon tears. The reason for this is unclear. One theory is that the body metabolizes drugs through the CYP 450 series of super-enzymes. Genetically some people lack the enzymes to properly metabolize this class of drugs. As for the permanance of the problem, most people recover after a couple of months.
Avatar n tn Good to see his symptoms improving. It could a side effect of levaquin, as this can cause swelling and pain in the joints, this is more so if he is prone for joint/tendon problems such as tendonitis and bursitis. It should resolve once the medication is stopped. Discuss these symptoms with your consulting doctor he may change the dose or the medication. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Both Cipro and Levaquin are drugs of a class known as quinolones. Of the two Cipro has the least side effects. The sore muscles may last for weeks or months or you may feel better in a few days. With that class of drugs there are ocasional reports of permanent tendon damage. This does not mean they should not be used. It is a matter of risk and benefit.
Avatar n tn I had luck with cipro the first time, and none or very minimal with levaquin which are in the same class of drugs I think. Can one work and not the other? Also, the levaquin has made me very fatigued and mental unable to do anything, like its making me depressed. I guess I'm leaning more toward an actual infection that has no been clinically diagnosed due to lack of testing properly and that I should be on a longer cycle of antibiotics.
Avatar f tn I need help please. My doctors had me on Levaquin for 4 years straight. I believe it's destroyed most of my immune system. Since being off Levaquin for the past few months, I have had chronic bronchitis and pneumonia since. My muscles and body is in agony. I now have to use oxygen all the time, day and night. The recovery times from surgeries are greatly extended now. I'm having another back surgery in a few weeks.
Avatar f tn I am pretty sure I just have a UTI but if for whatever I have an STD will the Levaquin that I am taking for my UTI cure chlamydia or gonorhea? I am taking 500mg for 6 days. Please help me. This discussion is related to Levaquin for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea.
Avatar f tn The calcium interferes with the action of the antibiotic, especially the class known as flouroquinilonesm (Cipro, Levaquin etc.) and the tetracyclines. After the full course of antibiotics has been taken and the infection resolved you can then eat yogurt to replenish the bacteria in the gut.
Avatar n tn Your doc has to isolate the type of infection and then treat it. I would bet that Bactrim will work if the Cipro/Levaquin class of drugs do not.
Avatar m tn Levaquin made me very ill. I have lupus & was given Levaquin for a sinus infection. Big no no. Levaquin can & will give you autoimmune disease symptoms and I already had one. Trust me it is not worth it. After 6 pills my calf muscles began to cramp. Dr. says ibuprofen 600mg a day.. Well its been all downhill from there. I developed full body tendinitis,(couldn't walk) my joints & muscles swelled so bad my nerves were compressed.
798555 tn?1292787551 The warning applies to drugs of the fluoroquinolone class, including Cipro, Cipro XR, Proquin XR, Levaquin, Floxin, Noroxin, Avelox, Factive, and marketed generics." http://www.webmd.com/osteoarthritis/news/20080708/fda-warning-cipro-may-rupture-tendons ******************** "Apparently there has been a change to the Black Box Warning for Floroquinolones.
Avatar m tn doesn't happen to everyone. There are neurological effects. If you walk alot, you will definately feel it cause it will make your tendons sore if you take it for a long time. I didn't have those side effect with cipro, but I did with levaquin it in the same class but much more powerfull. The first night I took it, my joints ached. Then I started getting chills. After a week or so taking it, the symptoms subsided. If you walk a lot at work, your feet will hurt more so than before.
Avatar n tn No change in bowel or bladder except he recently has been on levaquin for second episode of prostatitis (first episode 20 years ago). Any ideas about what is going on? thanks so much.
Avatar n tn My husband was diagnosed with Bacterial Pneumonia and was prescribed Levaquin. He has been off the medication for about a week and a half and he is still experiencing phobic attacks in the morning. He wakes up in a panic and believes that he cannot breath. While he was taking the drug he experienced major confusion, anxiety, depression and dizziness. It was awful! He even experienced a very bad episode when he became abusive...and delusional.
Avatar n tn I came home that day washed very well and started drinking a lot of fluids. I ended up starting to take antibiotics as well. I had a prescription for Levaquin 500 mg pills. I have 20 days worth. Will that kill anything that I could have contracted?
Avatar n tn I've been on 500mg. of Levaquin for 4 days and I'm having difficulty breathing. Not all the time at times it's just hard to catch my breath without doing anything too physical. Has anyone else had this side effect?
Avatar n tn As far as the breast moving, you must have a strong heart beat. I used to have this also and in CPR class the classmates actually counted my pulse visably in my neck. My pulse as weakened since then and I don't feel or see it anymore.
