Lantus insulin dosing

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus insulin dosing

lantus

Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Lantus is a long acting insulin that starts working within 1 to 2 hours, with a minimal peak in about 6 hours, and lasts 24 hours. You take one shot of it for your long acting insulin, and you still need to take a fast acting insulin to cover your corrections and meals. It is provides a fairly constant basal insulin all day long.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar f tn Super_Sally888 has provided good advice. One protocol is to take your blood glucose at night, then administer enough Novalog to bring it to normal levels. Then inject Lantus sufficient to bring the levels to normal in the morning.
Avatar n tn Some physicians have their patients bring their blood sugars down to a normal range in the evening, with Novalog and then keep it that way with a nightly dose of Lantus. But you need the cooperation and dosing advice of a physician.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar n tn She is supposed to call this morning about changing his dosing. She said evenutally he will be able to go to the insulin to carb dosing but not now. I have figured out if he does not eat every 2 hours his sugar goes low. Is that normal? I feel like I am over feeding him. Also he has NO symptoms as of now of low sugar so thats REALLY scary. Thanks for the info and all the suggestions. It is GREATLY appreciated!
1452593 tn?1285187324 Oh, I'm used to hearing that referred to as a OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test). I'm only aware of its use as a diagnostic tool to test first and second phase insulin responses. It's more useful than a fasting blood sugar for diagnosis, because some people still have normal fasting, long after they've developed impaired glucose tolerance, so it catches those people who are pre-diabetic or diabetic sooner.
20693191 tn?1503884408 It is quite normal to have to readjust insulin dosing when medications change. Bear with it, monitor closely, and adjust as necessary.
Avatar f tn Your husband needs to be on insulin. Often LANTUS is enough to do the job. The CDL medicals are a standing joke, as are the FAA medicals. Years ago I required a First Class FAA medical for jets and I got mine on pass from a hospital where I was released from the intensive care unit AMA (against medical advice) long enough to make the appointment, before I collapsed. I "passed". All that being said, diabetes and truck driving don't mix well.
Avatar f tn I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night. But since my blood sugar always drops at night, it caused a lot of lows for me. I switched to taking it in the morning and everything works better now. My nephew's blood sugar also drops at night.
Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
Avatar f tn Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress. Test times: 1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level 2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement 3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level. Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
Avatar n tn The other comment by imediject is another possibility. If you are injecting Lantus as your long-lasting insulin, and are injecting it in the morning, the Lantus will probably wear off between 20-24 hours after injection, causing glucose levels to rise in the morning until that morning's dose can kick in and cover it. You need insulin whether you eat or not, for a normal body produces and uses small amounts of insulin all day long, not just when we eat.
Avatar n tn I take Lantus and I also take Metformin 500 mg. twice a day. I am on 20 units of Lantus and have taken Lantus for years. (I use to be on 40 units a day, until I lost 125 pounds) I have not been good about following my diet and I notice that my blood sugar readings have been higher. My fasting blood sugars have been higher than normal (around 175) but I know it's because I have been eating too many carbs and have gained 20 pounds.
Avatar n tn Lantus is very slow-acting and really rarely causes severe hypoglycemia, in my experience, for warning symptoms occur long before it gets severe. However, if the warning symptoms are not listened to, I have personally noticed that the hypoglycemia that eventually happens makes me feel worse than some of the quick-acting insulins do.
Avatar n tn The currently accepted treatment of choice is a basal (long-acting) insulin like Lantus once or twice a day and a bolus or rapid acting insulin before meals. A fixed dose of bolus like you describe is not as good as developing a carb ratio. You need to take the correct insulin dose each meal to cover what you eat (unless you want to eat the same thing every meal!).
443862 tn?1237999439 The most common cause of weight gain when taking insulin is dosing of too much insulin / eating of too many carbs (and then needing too much insulin to cover them). The trick here is to cut your carb intake (carefully and with monitoring so that you don't go low) so that you can also reduce your insulin intake. High blood sugars are also a very serious health risk so please do not stop taking your insulin. There are some books which may help (please look for the latest editions):- 1.
Avatar m tn Hello, You don't have any choice but to use insulin. Humalog and Lantus are quite standard choices for people requiring insulin. With an A1c of 7.7 your average blood sugar is nearly 200, which is far too high and you are guaranteed to get diabetic complications down the road (normal blood sugars are 80- <140 at all times, even after eating). However, a sliding scale dosing scheme may not be the best approach.
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
