Common Questions and Answers about Lantus dosing twice a day

lantus

Avatar n tn Many people take Lantus twice a day... I did, Its called splitting the does. What did the MD say to take? If your numbers are great (what do you call great numbers) then its working for you.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
20693191 tn?1503884408 I take Lantus but I have to take it twice a day it wont last all day for me. I don't know your health info but I do know that 48 units is an extremely high dosage. I take 22 in the am and 22 at night but that's becuase it doesn't last but 12 hours in me. I tried to take Levemir and that one would barely hold me over for 8 hours. Its sometimes has to be a try and see phase.
Avatar n tn Hello, I've worked in the diabetes market for a while now and understand the differences between the various types of insulins.. i am also a type 1 diabetic. The previous posts explain very well the differences. If you are a type 1 than you most likely be on lantus with another fast acting insulin. The premixed insulins (such as 30/70 and mix30) are more targeted for type 2 diabetics who dont need as much flexibility with their dosing and are not on a more intense therapy.
Avatar f tn I urge you to find a diabetic clinic with a nurse-practicioner and a dietician who will work with you on a daily basis for a while, then a weekly basis to insure you know how and when to administer Lantus.
1134609 tn?1269272200 Does the regular Seroquel have to be taken twice a day? I take my morning dose and cannot stay awake; it's getting frustrating. If have I have to take it twice a day, does the drowsiness in the morning wear off after awhile?
Avatar n tn I take Lantus and I also take Metformin 500 mg. twice a day. I am on 20 units of Lantus and have taken Lantus for years. (I use to be on 40 units a day, until I lost 125 pounds) I have not been good about following my diet and I notice that my blood sugar readings have been higher. My fasting blood sugars have been higher than normal (around 175) but I know it's because I have been eating too many carbs and have gained 20 pounds.
Avatar f tn Novolog is before meals And Lantus is before bed or late in the evening.
Avatar m tn I am on Lantus 40 units, twice a day. Humalog sliding scale, starting at 20 units. For every 50 mg/dl over 150, 2 more units. In a typical day, Between 20-28 units multiple times a day. A1c=7.7 currently. Is Humalog maybe not the right choice if I need such high dosing?
Avatar n tn The Lantus offers a base dose for about a day, with minimal peaks. The child then has to take a shot before every meal but the shot can be given immediately after he eats -- the mom watches carefully to see how many carbs he consumed and then figures the dosage out based on what he ate. The reasoning for using NPH instead of Lantus may be because more shots are needed with the Lantus. Maybe the doctor feels that it is easier for the mom and the toddler to not have to deal with more shots.
Avatar n tn I take my bolld sugars of a morning fasting and they are like 167-191, I take 1000 mg of janumet and 18 units of lantus before bed, of a morning I take 20 Units of lantus, 45 mg actos why am I having problems regulating my blood sugars, I also take 7 units of novalog after every meal??? Do you have any other sugustions??
Avatar n tn If you really cannot tolerate it, you may ask your Dr about alternative long acting insulins such as Levemir (injected twice a day) and Tresiba (injected once a day), which may be alternatives to Lantus.
Avatar n tn Hello everyone, new to this forum. My name is Tom I'm 32 years old and have had diabetes (insulin dependent diabetes, type 1) for 24 years. I've been a pump user for almost 6 years now, but recently lost my health insurance and was forced to go back to injection because of costs for pump supplies. First off I hate it, not because needles hurt etc... actually using a pump it's more critical to make time for blood glucose monitoring.
Avatar m tn I am 43 year old male with type 2 I was told by my doctor to take 24 units twice a day and have gained 25 pound rather quickly. In july of this year was told to add Novalog 5 units after every meal and on sliding scale. I quickly gained anoather 25 lbs. and I feel miserable. I was on Byetta for 1 and a half and kept weight down and was put on oral meds and my levels was still in 400s thats when I start Lantus. I can't deal with the weight diet exercise does not help. What should I do.
Avatar f tn Hello I am new to novolin My Dr has me on 15 units twice a day after being on lantus for 1 year and it just did not work at all for me under 29 units was not enough and over 20 units bottomed my sugar out My question is and this also did this when i was on lantus is it normal after injecting yourself with insulin that my blood sugar spikes up I am talking it can be 150 and after the injection it will jump up to 300 with in 3 hours is this normal or is it just me I know I am not making sense
Avatar f tn My 23-year-old nephew who is 6'2" and weights well over 230 pounds only takes 34 units of lantus at night and up to 16 units of humalog if he eats pizza. I have told him that the lantus dose is governed by weight and since I weigh 220 and take 33 units a day, he isn't taking nearly enough. I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar m tn I think it was a good question.
Avatar f tn If she is experiencing lows or highs in her fasting and in between meals and bedtime than I would adjust the Lantus accordingly up or down. Always adjust a very small amount initially and see how that works for a couple days. If she is experiencing highs or lows two hours after meals than it would be her bolus and her Insulin:Carb ratio needs tweaking. You need to give a bit more information for us to go on.
Avatar n tn I've had Diabetes for 42 years, and something came to mind when I read that you're taking Lantus -- do you take it once a day, and is it in the AM or PM? I went through the Very same thing you're talking about when I was taking it once a day in the morning. The Lantus plus the humalog for carb coverage at meals worked great through the day, evening, and most of the night. But the problem was that the Lantus wasn't covering me for 24 hours.
Avatar n tn I tried to decrease my lantus intake from 28u to 21u, but the nighttime drop didnt decrase or disappaer, insated i started to have very high readings during daytime. I also tried to take lantus twice a day, but that didnt make any difference either. I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much).
