Avatar f tn I was also on epilim and was taken off because of the weight gain, im now on lamotrigine, at the begining I found this to really lift my mood but then it wasnt enough so I was added some other medication, cant remember the name, I was ok for months but now for some reason I have started to cycle again.
1756969 tn?1332437163 I have wide mood swings up and down, not bi polar state but i get irritable quite intensely but never know when they will hit. and than can you also tell me if this drug causes weight gain and increased appetite. please keep in mind that i have issues with an eating disorder and will not take any meds for that will cause weight gain or appetite. thanks!
Avatar m tn what mood stasblizer wont cause weight gain if any??? exclude serquil and lithiem and topamax..cant do these already been on them..
Avatar m tn topamax is not an atypical antipsychotic rather an off-label anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug to stabilize BP. Strange one of the side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite). The only drug i know which doesn't cause weight gain is lamotrigine. But aside from it all the AC's, lithium, AP's even AD's cause weight gain. In short all BP drugs increase weight. That's a price we pay. I recall once Oprah had a program for BP and all the guests were rather heavy weight persons.
1756969 tn?1332437163 I take lamotrigine - 200mg -- and it has worked well for me with no side effects. It is usually weight neutral meaning it doesn't affect your appetite. I have taken other mood stabilizers and didn't like the side effects - lithium, bad hand tremor, diarrhea, vomiting; depakote, hair loss, weight gain; seroquel, extreme sleepiness Do remember that this is my experience and yours may be different.
Avatar f tn The information is out there - just takes a lot of googling to get to it. And as always your psychiatrist will know this information and if weight gain is a big issue for you - talk to them about it. Another thing to know is that the weight gain usually levels off so it isn't like you will grow and grow. You will hit a certain weight and then stop (provided you eat properly of course).
7773352 tn?1394065574 Hello, I take Lithium and Seroquel . The Seroquel increase's appetite and weight gain but i have no issue's with Lithium except dry mouth and dehydration sometime's ,so i drink lot's of water . It's a mood stabilizer and work's well for me and you need regular blood test's so your Lithium levels are not too high .

925572 tn?1246540031 3 times the highest human maintenance dose (on a mg/m2 basis) during the latter part of gestation (days 15 to 20), maternal toxicity and fetal death were seen. In dams, food consumption and weight gain were reduced, and the gestation period was slightly prolonged (22.6 vs. 22.0 days in the control group). Stillborn pups were found in all 3 drug-treated groups with the highest number in the high-dose group.
Avatar f tn I really feel better mentally, no depression or pain, with lamotrigine, and I am so sad that I might have to give it up. I just saw my doctor yesterday and since it is February, she thinks that may be it is just a stomach virus... I need to live my life without having to pull over at gas station rest areas constantly! If this is caused by the lamotrigine, will I "adjust" and the diarrhea go away, or am I just really too sensitive to this medication?
1052851 tn?1307741160 I am wondering if there has been a drug similar, that can offer me relief, and not (or minimal), weight gain. It is causing me to get into a depressive state that I cant get out of, because I know dont have clothes that fit me, and I cant bear to look at myself...this is not good for me at all. If you know of/or heard of another medication that may help me without the weight gain! I would really appreciate it.
Avatar f tn I take it during nighttime. And no weight gain like what Depakote does... What about you? Whats ur dosage and how was ur Lamictal controlling ur seizures?
5544493 tn?1369608788 re BP I or II, and whether your main problems are depression, mania, or a lot of both, and whether you have psychosis in the mix. Lamotrigine and carbamazepine are generics, for the record, and Abilify and Seroquel are still under patent and so there aren't any generics yet. Anyway, lamotrigine (brand name Lamictal) is one of the best for BP II where depression is the main issue, although it's approved for BPI.
899491 tn?1243773627 Yes that's good news but of concern since it affected you to the point where it caused weight loss but glad it worked out alright. I'd suggest you have your doctor write a note that you are allergic to Lamictal and cannot take it in case you go to another doctor or clinic or hospital since they often ask that. Its not a big deal but they would know that's one mood stabilizer that could not be used. Just a practical suggestion.
Avatar f tn Only a few interactions between lamotrigine and other drugs have been identified. Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%.
918275 tn?1254068752 All I know is that it seems that all that has happened for me is that I traded one set of problems for another set (weight gain, depression over weight gain, Hoplessness, etc.) of issues. Primarily depressed and fatigued and hopeless, which is what I started out to be and is what I am still, only now overweight. I was skinny and miserable, why would I exchange that for fat and miserable or make that fat and way more miserable because of now being way overweight on top of everything else.
1895346 tn?1321305844 ve tried seroquel, geodone, ziprexa (although weight gain and cost are a factor) and abilify (cost may be a factor). There are also the mood stabilizers such as lamotrigine and depakote that may be useful. Lamotrigine is an easy one because it doesn't need blood tests. Make sure you titrate up slowly as it can cause a rash that can be fatal (although that is very very very rare) and titrating up seems to prevent that. I need a combination of medications.
Avatar n tn I was happier than I had ever been, but the Seroquel caused major weight gain and major sleepiness-I was falling asleeo at work. I went off Seroquel and tried Abilify and one other (cant remember) but they did not work. I am now backon Seroquel 300 miligrams along with my Lithium and Pexeva. I feel like it doesnt work as well as it did the first time. I went up to 450 with Seroquel, but I am just way too sleepy. Does anyone know a drug that works well with Pexeva and Lithium?
Avatar f tn Ziprexa is also a good one for many people but does cause a lot of weight gain but the weight gain does level off once you are on the drug for a while and it is very expensive but you can get assistance through the company to pay for it if needed. If you can you need to go and see a psychiatrist so they can help you with medications. And considering your last psychiatrist put you on an antidepressant while having manias I would seriously consider going to see someone else. Truly.
Avatar f tn Hello,`I am new at this soo.. i was diagnosed a yr ago and was put on effexor that didn't help, and serequel for racing thoughts. then my doc put me on wellbutrin xr that was ok for a couple of months but my depression has worsed tremendously and i am taking wellbutrin xr 200 mg, serequel 50mg, and clonapin. the wellbutrin has no effect on me at all and i was actually wondering about topamax. i have tried almost every antidepressent and nothing.
1310468 tn?1274863925 Lamotrigine and some other anti-convulsant medications are approved for maintenance treatment in bipolar I disorder, because they have something to do with altering the excitability threshold of certain neurons. We're not yet entirely sure how that helps to control mood instability in bipolar disorder, but they are proven to be very effective in this regard. The good thing about lamotrigine in particular is that it can also have an anti-depressant on top of the mood stabilization!
Avatar f tn For instance, if you have psychosis with your episodes, and atypical antipsychotic might be a good place to start, but most of them can cause weight gain. Geodon is the exception, being weight neutral (and Abilify is almost as good apparently from the weight standpoint). If you're BP II, especially if you're mostly depressive, Lamictal is a great place to start, and is weight neutral.
1390044 tn?1286150265 t take Depakote but I have experienced withdrawls from medications and my understanding is the process is the same. And I took Ziprexa which has the largest weight gain. (had to stop taking it because it spiked my triglycerides) I think you are going at it too fast. I would listen to your body. Once you are no longer experiencing any symptoms of withdrawl then go down again. Otherwise you could make yourself one sick puppy.
Avatar m tn If you want to talk to a doctor (psychiatrist) go to the doctor forum which is the other side of the lists, and go down to mood disorder. There you can post a question and a doctor will answer. There are limits to how many questions he will answer so it may take a few days to get a spot, but unlike many of the other doctors he doesn't charge anything.
Avatar m tn Most of the antipsychotics will have the same weight gain effects, and have more long term effects like metabolic syndrome and diabetes. It may also just be the dosage is too high. Sometimes even a little bit less of a dose will lessen the flattening without wrecking the clinical aspects. It also wouldn't hurt to add Omega Oils to the mix. I take 2000mg a day and really notice a difference. I take Jameson ones. 6 capsules a day.
2080404 tn?1643113754 I’m currently taking latuda and noticed a 5 pound weight gain so far. I’m bringing up the weight gain because that can really depress you. Trazadone didn’t work at all. Klonapin which is a benzodiazepine works great on anxiety. Do you take antidepressants? Wellbutrin is what I take. Everyone is different so medication is trial and error. Plus pcp aren’t really the best to prescribe these.
