Avatar n tn Here at Duke, we use mainly the low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet to treat diabetes and obesity. Hypertension gets better, heartburn gets better, fatty liver. The list goes on and on."" Excerpt from Diabetes UK - Low Carb High Fat Diet.. Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.
Avatar f tn Nathan was started on a diet for Seizure control...Ketogenic Diet. He had his last grand mal seizure the 3 day on the diet. Avatar n tn Thank you, just right now she only likes the sugar free soda offered on her diet, water not so much, or milk because I think she is sick of the whipping cream she had to drink for years.
Tbd Eat low carb / ketogenic diet. Avoid or strictly sugars, grains, starchy vegetables, and sweet fruits. Use a blood glucose meter to determine the effect of your diet on your blood sugar. This will help you fine tune what foods do and don't affect your blood sugars, and to what degree.
Avatar f tn She is on a ketogenic diet to help with the Lyme, so she gets low carbs, no sugar or processed foods, no dyed foods, no grains. I have called her pediatrician and scheduled an appointment to evaluate her, but thought I would ask here as well, because it'll be two weeks before they can see her. Thoughts, insights? Anything specific ringing a belly that I should look deeper into? Is there a connection to children's emotions and lyme, or is this two separate issues?
Avatar n tn Given your current situation and your extremely high blood sugars, if you want to reduce then using diet, then a very low carb diet / ketogenic diet would be the way to go. This diet however, may still not be enough to get your sugars down and you may still need insulin / other meds. Please know that if you eat a ketogenic diet you need to follow it strictly.
Tbd Some people, including me find that a ketogenic diet (focusing on very low carb, moderate protein, and unprocessed natural fats) is helpful for blood sugar. Aside from exercise, which you are already doing, weight loss, if you are overweight can help in lowering blood sugars. Other than this, you may wish to consult with your dr in case any change in medications can also assist your progress. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I started a ketogenic diet on Saturday and the last few days I've been feeling gassy and have slight "cramps", around the belly button area. Why is that?
Tbd For me, considering that diabetes is an inability of the body to properly process glucose I choose low carb / ketogenic diet. This diet is fairly easy to follow. No grains, no sugars, no starchy vegetables. There are some people for whom the low fat / high carb works. You would need to find out which suits you best and which one you can manage sustainably.
Tbd ve read on several different forums that people with type 2, who turned to a plant-based diet, were able to reduce their BMI to normal range and not need meds to regulate BG. Fish and chicken are allowed but I think that red meat is forbidden.
Avatar m tn Sorry about your son. There is a movie you might want to watch concerning epilepsy. The movie is "First Do No Harm". It is a true story concerning the use of the Ketogenic Diet with good results in treating epilepsy in children. Sure wish you the best with your son.
Tbd key words will be low-carb, and keto. If you do look into ketogenic diet, do not use it as an excuse to eat too much fat; if you want to lose weight fat has to be limited to fats that come naturally with the foods that you eat, rather than lots of extra fats being added. There are now many cases where this has happened (you can look up Virta Health a company that tries to guide patients to do this), and there are also many online supportive communities.

Avatar n tn I told him it is very difficult for me to get a lower A-1 C and I was never at 6.3 only when I was first diagnosed.
Avatar n tn Any suggestions. I am trying to get established with a doctor. When I am eating here at home was told to stick to 4 carb units per meal but rarely have I gon over two or three.
Avatar f tn Good for me and them both. I recently bought a new home treadmill. It is really nice to use. I can now notice my fitness levels dramatically improving. I have registered for a 5 km run event this year, and a 10 km one early next year. By signing up for these I am motivated to keep active and be fit enough to participate. My children are still young, so we just do usual things, like I take them swimming, walking in the mall.... holidays at the beach where we try to do lots of walking.
Avatar f tn Dear Niko Thank you again - you’re awesome taking the time to find the name. I was alerted to the Ketogenic diet by Dr Angela Stanton in 2015 with amazing results. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to reduce my high dose of Toprimate. I trialled reducing the dose by 50mg at night and the head pains (migraines and cluster) increased in severity and duratio tmy behaviour deteriorated. Then I went Imigran free for 14 days to see if I was overusing them.
Avatar n tn Yes, in addition to having a VNS, and being on the ketogenic diet she is taking Zonegran 300mg, Depakote 500mg and .25mg of klonopin 3X a day. What do the sharp waves actually mean- I get that they are the patterns recoded, but clinically what does it mean?
Avatar n tn Hi, Your blood sugars are still very high. Maximum daily dose of metformin is 2650 mg, I understand. So you are well below this still. Suggest you take efforts to further reduce your blood sugars. normal fasting should be in the range of about 4.4 - 5.2. 2 hours post eating should be less than 7.7 and ideally less than 6.6 (or close to fasting levels). Low carb diet may help greatly with reducing post eating blood sugars (look into low carb / ketogenic / paleo-style).
