Avatar n tn Given your current situation and your extremely high blood sugars, if you want to reduce then using diet, then a very low carb diet / ketogenic diet would be the way to go. This diet however, may still not be enough to get your sugars down and you may still need insulin / other meds. Please know that if you eat a ketogenic diet you need to follow it strictly.

Avatar f tn She is on a ketogenic diet to help with the Lyme, so she gets low carbs, no sugar or processed foods, no dyed foods, no grains. I have called her pediatrician and scheduled an appointment to evaluate her, but thought I would ask here as well, because it'll be two weeks before they can see her. Thoughts, insights? Anything specific ringing a belly that I should look deeper into? Is there a connection to children's emotions and lyme, or is this two separate issues?

Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.
4879855 tn?1360440197 Unchecked, this can lead to ketoacidosis as the ketones released by lipolysis (fat burning) for fuel turn the blood acidic (although full blown ketoacidosis is rare in type 2, since there is some insulin floating around). The ketogenic diet (lots of fat, regular protein, very low carb) exploits the same mechanism, but at a much lower level that doesn't turn the blood acidic. Sorry, the section of bio class that dealt with cell signalling used diabetes as a model to help us understand.

Avatar n tn The stone may still be there yet not cause any symptoms. It can even result in kidney damage without giving you any additional pain. I think that you need to have a test (CAT Scan of abdomen and pelvis) or IVP to demonstrate the absence of the obstruction/stone. It sounds as though you have had a work-up with 24 hour urine collections to look for the amount of substances that you excrete in your urine that may cause or inhibit stone formation. Now, what to do with the information.
